A Look llnto The Past THE HISTORY OF MOUNT VERNON HIGH SCHOOL ' The educational system of Mt. Vernon has grown from classes held in a small log cabin on the southwest corner of the Public Square to the present junior-Senior High School and several grade schools. The first school was built in 1808 and in 1857 plans were made for a central building which was completed in 1859. This school was used for secondary, grammar and high school. William Mitchell was the first super- intendent and eight other teachers were employed at this building. As the city grew it was necessary to provide a large modern building.
