-D l elif J' their ww-l I if, --, Combining the t e a c hing s of history dating back to the days of the Egyptian with the new twentieth century approaches to living, Mtg Vernon Community College, even though only five years old, is merging the new with the old. With the establishment of the college came the yearbook, which adopted the name of Pyramid in honor of the Egyptian pyramids centuries ago. The Pyramid captures the spirit of both the,Egypt of old and the Southern Illinois region, which for more than 100 years has been known as Little Egypt, anickname which camebfrom this area, as it supplied Northern and Central Illinois with much-needed grain during crop failures in the early 1800's. It seems only appropriate that Mt. Vernon, as the largest city of Little Egypt, continues to carry on the area's tradition. 3

l X y 1 + 4.4tfifr??f The leading edge of civilization has always rested with those coun- tries in which education has been most highly prized. From the Ameri- c an dream has come a vision of an entire citizenry, each member of which has been enabled to develop his abilities to the greatest extent compatible with his interests and willingness to labor. With the establishment of the Mt. Vernon Community College in 1956, educational opportunities in the Mt. Vernon area have been tremend- ously expanded as is evidenced by the fact that the percentage of Mt. Vernon Township High School graduates attending college has doubled since 1956. Opportunity for acollege education means more than an opportunity to prepare for a more remunerative occupation It means a chance to touch minds with the great men of the past and from them to gain in spiration It means the opportunity for each student to catch a glimpse of the whole pattern of the universe and to try to find a place for him self within that pattern The task remaining to the student is to demonstrate the fruits of the American d r e am through full development of his capability to profit from the le gac y of the past, through organized progress toward his own maturity and through his efforts to help build a better community
