Here we illustrate some of the events that show our response to the challenge. This year the bas- ketball team played with great determination. The community enjoyed entertainment in the Pub as well as stimulating “Conversations With Mattie Ward retired after 37 years of loyal service to the college. This fall 17 students were inducted into the Alpha Chi honor society. And students offered the Dean of Students a challenge by taping her into her office. 3

Each of us will be faced with the challenges of the 1980’s in a variety of ways. Emotionally, socially and economically and politically we will encounter situa- tions that we will question and perhaps even defy. This year’s Phoenix portrays Mount Vernon’s response to the new challenges of the 1979-80 academic year.
