PHOENIX: Fabulous Arabian bird. Emblem of solar or fire worship. It supposedly lives to a great age, at which time it burns itself to ashes and after three days comes to life again. Thus, it is symbolic of immortality, rejuvenation, self- immolation. It appears alone, without mate or companions. Figuratively, a person of singular or superlative excellence, a prodigy. The dedication of a yearbook must reflect the interaction of the entire community. Such tribute should be to those who have touched the moments or days of our lives. Thus, we dedicate Phoenix to each of those who have lessened a moment of crisis or shared an hour of happiness. Thank you. - Kos Michael Mary Robin Jennifer Leigh Ann Tom Marguerite Sam Irma Sherri phi ito by TWA TEIPEL 2 A time comes when one is forced to concentrate on living, A time comes when one has to renounce dying in full flight 3 Jennifer and Leigh Hantho 4 5 r 6 So closely interwoven have been our lives, Our purposes, and experiences, That separated, we have a feeling of incompleteness. And each year, they emerge a little wiser, not so terror-stricken, and a little closer to each other. As a matter of fact, this year s freshmen look like they ' re having a pretty good time. The vote was close, but the Upperclassmen decided to pass freshmen Va- rieties once again. 128 Students Entertain at Pub AT LEFT: Diane Smith (78) and Laurie Leimbrook (79) in har- mony. Men from miles around flock to Mount Vernon to revel in wine, women and song (actually it ' s beer but who ever heard of wine, women and beer?). This year s Spring Weekend was brought to you by Cyndi Steele and Katie Kittle along with their co-workers on Social League. 138 SPRING WEEKEND . . . 1979 139 “Vanities:” A Play For Us All Mount Vernon was treated to an adventure in theatre this year with the production of Jack Heifner’s “Vanities. Produced by Marilys Ernst and Curtain Callers, the play was directed by Andrew Pyne, a graduate student in theatre at Catholic University. Vanities is concerned with the lives of three somewhat confused, somewhat so- cially non-conseious young women who grew up in the sixties. The three stages of the play find them first in high school concerned only with cheerleading, boys and popu- larity; in college, concerned only with sorority, boys and popularity; and then reunited briefly at a New York apartment as they are turning thirty, a little older, a little wiser and a little different Kathy, played by Mirra Pren- dergast (center cheerleader) ended up searching for something with some meaning. Mary, portrayed by Sarah Smith (cheerleader at right) became a thirty-year old world traveller and the somewhat bitter and over- sexed owner of a pornographic art gallery. And Joanne, the girl who never quite grew up but nonetheless married the boy of her dreams was brought to life by Nancy Rob- bins (cheerleader at left). The three girls are friends throughout their lives, so much so that they can never remember being apart for any length of time. Their de- pendence on each other is touching and somewhat sad as their last act of sharing is Joanne ' s husband, Ted. 140 141 c !z:0 H N !z; 0 0 Student Government Association STANDING (1 to r): Mindy MacNeur, Laurie Leimbrook, Laurie Thompson, Kathleen Dumais, Marca Rowley, Rita Greene, Tina Teipel, Anne Jemison, Chop Cholnoky, Peggy Cross, Barbara Tannenbaum, Lisa Policano, AnneMarie Dienstbaeh.
