On behalf of the yearbook. I would like to present to you this orchid. And next year I will be mailing you your complementary yearbook, where you’ll find a section dedicated to you — Bea Spottswood. TO DEAR BEA After 37 years of being there when we needed you the most, how can we begin to thank you? From the days of a restricted campus, when all of the student would gather with you down at the Field House, to today’s mobile campus, when students still gather with you, but at the Gate House. You’ve seen the campus move and grow from Nebraska Avenue to Foxhall Road; from the Seminary and Junior College to a four year Col- lege, from a college which had a ‘’traditional” Chapel to a modernistic glass Chapel. You ' ve been here through it all, and yet your loyalty to us has never changed. The rules have changed, the dress has changed, your job has changed, but the love between you and the students — the students and you — has continued through the years, and will always continue. 164 Bea with Mary Copeland Bea with Judy McLaughlin and Cissy Baker 165 Bea, Cissy Baker, Judy McLaughlin and Judy Shepherd Bea with Charlene Agurs BEA Thank you for your faith enabling us to survive, Thank you for seeing us through the transition, proving we deserved to be inside. Thank you for your time and never-ending patience, Thank you for your kind words as we pass through the gate. Thanks for sorting those letters we so anxiously await, Thanks for getting the calls through and just keeping things straight. Thank you for your enlightening spirit and pride, Thank you for your awareness and true beauty inside. Thank you for all your strength and comforting aid, Thank you, Bea, for there’s surely no way that any of us who achieve success ever truly makes it on her own — There are people like you to keep us alert and aware, always smiling and caring, always there. WE ALL LOVE YOU. The Black Student Alliance Mount Vernon College May, 1978 166 ft. I On July 31 Bea Spottswood completed 37 years of dedicated work at Mount Vernon College. In loyalty we serve thee And strive to heed thy call, Mount Vernon, 0, Mount Vernon! Through self to conquer all. II You give unfailing kindness If trouble meet us here; You foster all our pleasures And make them seem more dear, Nor time, nor care, nor sorrow Can these fair days erase, But they, with each to-morrow Help us new tasks to face. III Like Breath of Spring’s fresh morning That lifts the heart to song. When courage droops and wavers And paths seem gray and long, Will come thy dauntless spirit To help us on the way. Mount Vernon, O, Mount Vernon! Hold fast thy tender sway. IV The changing years may bring us Some longed for dream of bliss, Yet memory will cherish A sympathy we miss. In hours of joy or sadness, What ' er our need may be. Mount Vernon, 0, Mount Vernon! Thy children turn to thee. 190 Yearbook Staff Editor in Chief Peggy Connolly Assistant Editor Lavern Jackson Layout Editor Elise Leffler Photography Editor Jessica Holden Assistant Photography Editors Cissy Baker Tina Teipel Staff Photographers Margarita Nielsen Murphy Tuomey Free Lance Photographer Group Dorm Pictures Lucy Brown Other Helpers Robin Crabb Missy Gaylord Lynne Hughes Mary McMahon Mindy MacNeur Laurie Thompson rY Lisa McNelis !Il fl 191 SPECIAL THANKS TO . . . . .
