Text from Pages 1 - 150 of the 1974 volume:

Who are We? Mount Vernon College Bell Cote 1974 We are 'Women in Washington'. 1 n Women in Woshington Are like Lysistrata's corps: Resourceful, Persistent, And Capable. Long ago they became Managers of academies. Ministers plenipotentiary. Magi, And even managers. Now They shall overcome Even male chauvinists Men, On the other cheek. Have their heads turned In attempting to become Resourceful, Persistent, And capable. Long ago they believed in Entrepreneurial exclusivity. Now, An imperiled species. They congregate in corporate gardens of concern To plan strategies For another Eden. No matter; Since the fall of the apple Women have clothed the world In righteous indignation Having learned early The power of the toga In the cause of liberation. Peter and Isobel Pelham January, 1974 1974 DEDICATION with much love and affection We may live without poetry, music, and art; We may live without conscience, and live without heart; We may live without friends; we may live without books; But civilized 'man' cannot live without cooks. 'He' may live without books — what is knowledge but grieving? ‘He’ may live without hope — what is hope but deceiving? ‘He’ may live without love — what is passion but pining? But where is the 'man' that con live without dining? Owen Meredith Thonk you. Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses. For the people hear us singing: Bread and Roses! Bread and Roses! clt-jfr As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men. For they are women's children, and we mother them again. Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes; Hearts starve as well as bodies, give us Bread, but give us Roses! As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread. Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew. Yes, it is Bread we fight for — but we fight for Roses, too. As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days. The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
