In our desire for relativity We attempt dialogues Of cosmic dimensions, But Einstein expressed it best: E = me 2 , The human condition, however, Does not argue well For formulae. Cells, chromosomes, and water Are impersonal. The protoplasmic phenomenon Of life Is essentially transcellular, Therefore, Let us combine to provide A camera obscura. Jennifer and Paula House Residents, Ames Steve and Chris Malley with daughter Lisa, House Residents , Cole Dedication We think we ' ve come a long way, as the say- ing goes, entering Mount Vernon as just so many individuals, but developing a tremendous sense of togetherness while here. We have experienced a force which has brought us together. Think back to the first hello in September and ahead to the last goodbye in May; to the element which throughout the year held the fort down but always managed to keep things rolling. We felt at home knowing there was someone to turn to when we needed a friend, sharing the good times as well as the bad, living together and learn- ing together, And though we must depart as individuals ready to make our mark in the world, we are all bound by the not much older but wiser friends we leave behind, knowing that whatever we achieve will be due in part to their influence. We. the class of 1973, wish to dedicate our yearbook to these friends, the House Residents. The structure has been radically altered (not altered by radicals:) and the classes of ' 73 and f 74 will be the first ones to see it work. The new system is completely differ- ent from any other student government in the United States, It is unique, yet based on several different , valid and working representative bodies to- day Essentially, the student govern- ment will revolve around five equal Senators and twelve members of Student Council. Each of the Senators 3 sophomores and 2 freshmen) will preside over the entire Student Government for a single 6-week block. This Senator will be referred to as the Presiding Senator or Senator-in-charge t and she has the final responsibility for that six weeks, much as the President of the Student Body has now for the whole year. She will also be the Chairman of the Judicial Board during her six week block FRESHMEN SENATORS: Gretchen Staak and Jewell Trowers. SOPHOMORE SENATORS: Chris Caldwell, Basi McAshan. Bell Cote Post Qcnipt, Jeuu SO, 7 97 S CAND DS CALLED FOR The Bell Cote 73 is rapidly taking shape The first half of the book was submitted to the publisher before Christmas vacation with the second and final submission approaching in February. At this time the staff would like to ask your cooperation on a few important points. First of all T Lucy Brown is currently taking pic- tures of clubs and officers as well as of the freshmen by dorms. Please listen and watch for notices of when your dub or house will be photographed, and be sure to be present. Second, but of equal importance, is the matter of the candid section of the yearbook. This should be a significant part of the publication because it alone can show f the vital behind-the-scenes nitty gritty of campus life. The staff depends largely on you, the students to contribute pictures of yourself and your friends for reproduction in the book. Photos should be black and white but good dear color shots are acceptable. All pictures will be returned in May. To date very few photos have been submitted. Remember it ' s up to you! If you all want a representative candid section please take and submit your pictures to Linda Cuzzi Hensley 35 as soon as possible. The absolute deadline is February 5th. Post C lpt, Jcuv. 20, 1 973 The cocktail party held Friday evening, December 1st at the Pirate ' s Den, provided a buffet upstairs with drinks and music by St. John’s Churchyard downstairs. A good number of students attended as well as President and Mrs. Pelham and Mr. and Mrs. Jewett. Students agreed it was a nice subdued party. But this was certainly not the ease Saturday night. That evening the Christmas Formal was held at the Golden Parrott Restaurant in downtown Washington. It was just one of those nights w r hen everything clicked — clear and crisp outdoors with a fire blazing in the foyer fireplace inside, The band, Musique, w r as terrific and everyone present had access to all the hors d’oeuvres, beer and champagne they could handle (and then some!). Spotted among the 90 odd couples crushed together on a 9 by 12 dance floor were several Mt. Vernon alumnae and Dean Huntington! If you were there, no more need be said. If you weren’t, you should ' a been. You missed a g reat time. 67 Asylum LSyiut , VoluMb Oti — tSSuA Ott An Invitation In Don Quixote Cervantes says, Come, enter into my imagination, Asylum invites you to enter into the imagination of your fellows as the staff presents this anthology of poetry essays, photography, fiction and paint ' mg. There were an estimated forty seven high school juniors and seniors on campus Friday and Saturday, November 10 and 11, representing a number of high school and prep schools. Friday morning the students arrived and attended a reception in the Administrative Center, where they mingled with students and faculty. Mrs Whitney Tom McMahon and Dean Huntington spoke about different aspects of college life and pro grams that Ml. Vernon has to offer. Following this informal gathering the girls attended lunch and classes of I heir choice. A three screen slide show which was put together by the L.R.C. was shown in the refectory presenting the various aspects and opportunities of Mount Vernon and Washington. After indulging in one of the famous dining hall dinners, the visitors were taken to Ford ' s Theatre to see Cod spell. Upon their return they enjoyed watching and dancing to Harvey Hupcup and the I hi -Ron- Rons, the main feature in the field house . that evening PRESIDENT: Pal Benton Bnen Jordan, Holly Eason. Driving into the center of Wash- ington, you may catch a glimpse of a Mount Vernon politician entering or leaving 1730 Pennsylvania Ave, , Nixon ' s campaign headquarters. With the exciting advent of the November elections, the Young Republicans headed by Brien Jordan have been actively participating in the cam- paign by doing volunteer work with the Young Voters and The Committee To Re-elect the President, The volunteers report that it is alof of fun being involved and working with the people at the headquarters. Some of the work has involved addressing envelopes, sorting mail, mapping, making telephone calls and can- vassing. Illustrious figures have made occasional visits to the head- quarters: some girls had the op- portunity to talk to Mrs Agnew. Depending on the interest of the students, an election returns party may be held in the Field House Election Day at 9:00, If you have any questions or would like to do volunteer work with the Young Rep- ublicans, call Brien at 3193. Time is getting short! ST george? The Young Democrats club is a group open to any interested student who is registered at Mount Vernon. Its purpose is to promote interest in political activity by bringing provocative speakers to campus , by holding debates, and by joining with neighboring college chapters in various political activities. This year, the president of Young Democrats is Bertrand Spangler, the vice- president is Debbie Burns and the secretary-treasurer is Cindy Pikul. The members are: Kim Gully, Diane Diliin and Barbara Sam. The main and most important ac- tivity in which the members are presently engaged is working in the Democratic Headquarters on 1910 K St. They answer phones, mimeograph papers, sell posters and pins, and drive aged and other people in need of a ride to the polls. On Sat- urdays, they help take polls by going from door to door in certain neigh- borhoods. If the person is in favor of George McGovern, they then offer them a ride to the polls if need- ed along with any material they might want about him. If there are any people who are in- terested in joining Young Democrats, please cantact Bertrand Spangler, Rm.ff 31, Somers. IB 92 so, 1972 Get Up And Get Away Student Coordinating Committee, under the skillful leadership of Cindy Pikul, has been searching for new and different ways to involve Mt. Vernon students in extra-curricular activities For example, Cindy not only arranged transportation for girls interested in witnessing the inaugural parade; she also managed to secure a number of $50 box seat tickets for $5 apiece! (There are some bargains you just can ' t argue with.) The Committee is also busy right now recruiting some very interesting speakers for February, as well as planning a return visit and poetry reading by Eugene Robert Piatt and his wife, Kathleen. And for those itching to get away for a while. Student Coordinating Committee is sponsoring another trip to Annapolis. This time the destination will be the Naval Academy for a mixer with the upper classmen, A chartered bus will leave the gatehouse at 1:0G p.rm on Sunday, February 4th and return around 5:00 p.m, that afternoon. Afternoon dresses or nice pants are the requested attire. For further details on these upcoming events, check the calendar and be listening for announce- ments in the dining hall. Student Coordinating Committee Pat Jones, Barbara Sam r President. Cindy Pikul, Debbie DePalma 93 Curtain Callers PostScript, Nov. 2 1 , 1972 The Roar of the Grease Paint by Laura Brown Curtain Callers will open up this season with the sparkling and side-splitting play — Good-bye My Fancy. It is the story of a liberal Congresswoman, Agatha Reed, who returns to her old college to re- ceive an honorary degree. Because of her wartime experiences she has devoted her life to the task of making people aware of the horrors of war That is why she has brought a documentary film to show the innocent young graduates However, the board of trustees of the college think that the film is much too harsh and improper to show to the girls, so Miss Reed has a fight on her hands. The conflict exposes the president of the college to be a spineless and irresolute figure, instead of the strong and out- spoken figure that she has thought herself to be in love with for so many years. Her disenchantment drives her into the arms of a wartime flame, who as a Life photographer, has come down to cover the event. The play is being directed by the very talented Eileen Hammond, a professional actress Ms. Hammond was born in London, and studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art She has done every aspect and medium of the theater, from acting on the stage and directing to appearing on BBC.
