Vernon , otherwise campus life would be the constant sameness as any other weekday. From that first period class until the last , the academic day moves on .. . BERRECKMAN House Mother ACTIVITIES JUDICIAL BOARD This year a Judicial Branch was added to Mount Vernon ' s student government. It is controlled by the newly formed Judicial Board, which is com- posed of eight elected members. It is the duty of the Judicial Board to deal with all social and academic infractions of the Honor Code and to build a strong respect for the Honor Code, in order that the entire system will prevail. HOUSE PRESIDENTS COUNCIL The purpose of the House Presidents Council is to coordinate the rules and regulations between the resident houses and the day students. It also makes rec- ommendations to the Cooperative Coun- cil in regard to the house government and other house activities. The Presidents and Vice-Presidents of the four residence houses, the day student President, and the President of the Student Body are the active members of this council. COOPERATIVE COUNCIL The main link of cooperation between the stu- dents and the faculty is constituted by the Co- operative Council. This year the Cooperative Council reviewed the Honor System and considered specific proposals of students for change and for new legislation. The Council is presided over by the President of The Student Body. Open meetings are held every week, thus giving each individual the opportunity to contribute ideas for a more successful Student Government at Mount Vernon. A new honor society this year is the Mu Kappa Chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society which consists of the students of Junior Colleges in the United States. The purpose of the club is to promote scholarship and to develop character in the individual student. It also plans lectures and infor- mal discussion groups which are held in the Spring. This year the membership has increased to four with Talmadge Hin- kle as President and Mrs. James Eckert as faculty advisor. SOCIAL LEAGUE LEFT TO RIGHT: Anne Groves, Carol McNeilly, Patty Fitzpatrick, Maureen Sullivan, president; Kitsy Thomas, Susan Gamage, Patty Har- ron. The elegant Christmas dance, at the Sheraton-Carlton Hotel and the fun-tilled Spring weekend were two of the many enjoyable functions held by the Social League, both on and off campus, this year. The chief aim of the Social League committee is to provide each student with a wide variety of social activities, and to encourage enthusiastic support for such events. The committee consists of a President and a Freshman and Senior representative from the day students and resident houses. The activities of this years’ Young Dem- ocrats include attending campaign rallies, debates, and victory parties. The Young Republicans, because of their recent growth in size and in activities, have established a repu- tation both on and off the campus. This year the Young Republicans took an active part in the State and National campaigns, members worked at the local, regional, and National headquarters. They attended lectures and rallies. Members acted as hosts to prominent speakers on campus throughout this election year. 87 LEND-A-HAND This year Lend-A-Hand has increased its mem- bership as well as the scope of its social aid proj- ects. Once a week the members lend a helping hand at convalescent and mental hospitals in the Wash- ington area. Members have, this year, enthusias- tically taken part in a tutoring service for unfor- tunate children as one of their new projects. Students interested in the dramatic or technical aspects of the thea- tre joined together once again this year, to form and maintain Mount Vernon’s dramatic society, “The Curtain Callers.” A crackling fire and a gayly decorated Post Hall was the scene for the “Curtain Callers” Wassail reading of Stephen Schofield ' s, The Shepherds Story. On May the seventh the curtain went up, once again, on “The Curtain Callers” final production of the year, William Inge’s Picnic. 88 FOLK SINGING GROUP BACK ROW: Susan Thompson, Janet Niven, Mr. William Mosier, advisor; Terry Boynton, Lucy Ross. FRONT ROW: Peggy Lewis, co- chairman; Candy Hovey, chairman; Ann Groves, Jody Woodruff. The Folk Singing Group, now known as The Travelers, traveled on . . . this year. Their nine members, including their faculty advisor Mr. William Mosier, performed for us at Christmas time and once again at The Father ' s Day Dinner. The group was formed for the chief purpose of extending to others the enjoyment of listening to Folk music, as well as to give the individual an opportunity to participate in singing the songs. This year the weekly Chapel service at Mount Vernon is completely organized and maintained by the Student Chapel Committee. This Committee is composed of students interested in helping to make the weekly Chapel service worthwhile. The Chapel Committee has combined this year with the Religion Seminar which provides an opportunity for the student to understand religion in terms of the individual. 89 GLEE CLUB BACK ROW: Joan McCaskey, Janet Niven, Margaret Daniel, Mr. William Eckert, faculty advisor. Fifteen or twenty girls, who enjoy singing and music, compose the Mount Vernon Glee Club. Under the faculty direction of Mr. William Eckert, the members partic- ipate in the weekly Chapel Service and twice during the year they prepare a complete program for the service. At Yuletide the Glee Club presented Benjamin Britten ' s, A Ceremony of Carols. When Spring sprung the Glee Club, once again, entertained us with an Easter program, which consisted of various religious selec- tions. Mount Vernon ' s Athletic Association is composed of girls interested in promoting enthusiasm and interest in the College ' s program of sports and games. The activities of the association include intramural, varsity, and in- terhouse sports, a newly formed Cheerleading Squad of ten girls, and a faculty-student held day. DANCE CLUB College students, who have shown a dis- tinguished ability towards dance, are the members of the Mount Vernon Dance Group.
