This elevated position was obtained only after spending many restless nights in the Lower Berth, rocking uneasily, incapable of overpowering real or imaginary road blocks. Because the Upper Berth has a wider field of vision and experience, it has gained prestige. But ii also carries the responsibility of cushioning the bumps that might disrupt the course of the Lower Berth.
