That was the day ninety bewildered girls piled off trains coming from all over the country to begin their studies at Mt, Vernon. Aunt “Minnie” saw that with our suitcases, as well as our heads, we were delivered safely to our new home. The school was still rather new, and we were fascinated to see the red clay grounds turn into beautiful green lawns in no time at all. The first task that confronted us was six weeks of probation with a test and a vaudeville at the end. The Seniors must have been rather pleased at the pro- ceedings for we were the first class m years to all get off probation. That started us working together as a unit under the leadership of Martha Boardman. We soon chose our class motto, colors, and flower which the Seniors never guessed after many drastic attempts. We were challenged to a Ingenuity Con ' test by the Seniors after Christmas and came out victors — we were a working unit. Later in spring we had a ring ceremony with the presentation of our school ring. This was followed by the presentation of our colors. “One Night in Monte Carlo” was the theme for the traditional junior ' Senior banquet given in the early part of May in honor of the graduates. It was a lost feeling when we told the Seniors good ' by in ]une, but we treas- ured all the friendships that had been made. When September, 1948, rolled around we returned but not as bewildered as before. We were Seniors and we had proudly awaited this for many years. This year Miss DeLano was to be our class advisor and no one could have pleased us more. She was our “Rock of Gibraltar.” We challenged the Juniors to the Ingenuity Contest after Christmas and after a hard time on the part of the judges the decision was in our favor. We had not only worked together as a class but with spirit no one could take away. The future months hold even more activities in store for us — money for the Building Fund, parties, and a fashion show. Only too soon will come Cap and Gown Ceremony, the Tree Planting Ceremony and Class Night. Our last step will be graduation in June — a day which we will receive a slip of paper that will entitle us to take our places in a new world but a slip that symbolizes all that Mt. Vernon has meant to us and will continue to mean to us through the years. He who wills to succeed, can not fail” was never more truer said than of the Class of 1949. So stay as you all are and you will succeed for not a one of you deserves to fail. 45 Irene Connelly u I O K S 5yA Till the Cncl of Time President Madalyn Breitzke Vice-P ssifett Carol Willett Secretory Patricia Forbes Treasurer Sally McDonald 47 - Carol Patricia Joanne Ann Angel! Dear Flo: 1 received your letter yesterday inquiring about the doings of our Senior Class of 1949, and I’m only too glad to pass on to you the news that I’ve had. It seems as though our gals are still retaining an interest in the local men ' s colleges. Helen Persson has just been appointed Director of Visual Education for a large majority of the Eastern men’s colleges. She has her headquarters at Princeton. Mavis Brooks, Carolyn Cargile, and Margaret Benners are busdy organizing a group to convince the administration at Washington and Lee University that their school should be co-educational, The former Virginia Addison has already made application to have her son attend Virginia Military Institute when he reaches the entrance age. Bonny Howes is running a little tool shop in sunny Pasadena, and Caroline Arrington is occupied with the raising of Billygoats. Jody Thomas is winning stacks of blue ribbons for her champion horses; her biggest competition in this field comes from Ann Flannagan and Alberta Stephens who are raising a crop of winners themselves. Libby Jones is their dependable vetinarian, abely assisted by Franny Baker in the capacity of an efficient nurse. Sue Boston is on a buying tour for her exclusive dress shoppe, Caroline Collier is her chief executive in charge of advertising and Pat Candler, Betty Davis, [ane Neuenschwander and Franny Norris are her models. Dendy Iverson, Sue Bean and Mary Evans complete her staff as designers of red dresses for red heads. A project that has been giving them more than a httie difficulty. Salty Lou Smith is the head of the League of Women Voters, Sue Cravens has just been elected National Chairman of the Doll Club and Nancy Clark is Dean of Women at Stanford, Virginia Persons is running an International Date Bureau and employing overworked secretaries, Diana Hutchinson, Ann Wed ' thoff and Dorris Chapin. Saw r a picture of Pat Leach in the Washington Post. She was looking mighty happy over the cup she had won in the Bermuda races. Also heard that Ardie Robinson w ' as applying as Sigma Chi House Mother at Utah University. Laura Murphy is busily knitting carburetor covers; Kitty Parker is editing a church bulletin; Julia Emiliani was South America’s annual beauty queen, Pixie, at last report, w F as typing out her autobiography, The Pixie Papers, Barbara Baldwin is working as a barker for Ringling Brothers Circus, Jackie Yokum is pitching for the Brooklyn Dodgers; and Rosa Maria Garcia-Tunon has taken over her uncle ' s position at Georgetown. If you see a familiar face on a sign board the chances are its eithei Mary Ellen Shipps, Martha Evans or Marjorie McKinnon who are making a fortune advertising “the pause that refreshes” for Janie Carson’s firm. I ran into Joan Hitchcock, Peg Merriam and Liz Weldon in the Army-Navy Club. Guess what they were doing? Looking for a fourth for bridge. Also heard from Anne Yerkes that she’s still having trouble trying to explain her nickname and Joey Mulford is more bargain conscious than ever now with a new arrival in her family. Saw Dee Coolidge at the airport. Seems as though she spends most of her time trying to catch planes to Memphis. Irene Connelly, I hear, is personally responsible for “see Rock City” sign in the southern part of the United States. Martha Boardman is running a peaceful rest home. I hear her guests are always in bed by eleven in the evening. Ginny de Serville has taken up residence with her family in Atlanta. Elizabeth McCarthy is running a charm school for prospective actresses with Marianne McGowen and Helen Logan as assistants. Carol Raymond and Freddy Mendoza are chaperoning groups of Mt. Vernon pupils on European and South American tours. Phil Klingler and Janis Shoop are running a nursery school. Jan is doing the cooking and they are losing money as she insists on steak for every meal. M. C. Woolwme is giving guitar lessons and Louise McNeel is her financial advisor. Barbara Ritch, Marti Lanier and Mary Anne Swint are sponsoring quiz kid programs. The majority of the participants on it are their own children. Last of all, the former Misses Marion Smith, Molly Armbrecht, and Melissa Mclntire are running a very profitable Navy Wives Diaper service.
