Fourth Form 1944 MT. VERNON SEMINARY WASHINGTON, D. C. The Class of ’44 wishes to express its deep and heartfelt gratitude to those faculty members whose effort and encourage- ment have made this book possible. To Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd, Miss Hastings, Miss Myers, and Miss Carroll, we extend our earnest and sincere thanks. DEDICATION Miss Florence A, Carter To you for your encouragement, your inspiration and your unfailing interest in each one of us. You have smoothed many of the rough places j you have been a true companion. The class of 44 takes this opportunity to thank you for the help which you have so generously given us. CLASS POEM We weep For leaving all who have contrived That basis for our start, Not spanning spaces in a single sweep But faring down a clearly marked path, For those who pointed out the way, What we must face In life, and what, also, We must encounter in ourselves; Time cannot erase these memories. And we weep not. For Life expands before us and We reach out to it as toward distant stars, Known far away yet ever seeming near. We must become what we must be And more. Together we are Incredible ; so said Mrs. Lloyd when twice we won Flag Honor. No denying, we are Record-breaking with Anne, Judy, Topsy, and Woo in Optima; Tribby, Molly, and Ray in Sports. And we were Dynamic as we all worked together with Miss Shisler’s aid. Fun we have had, while mirthful Mimi, Pat, and Betsy kept us gay; the dance was successful — in fact, it was grand; and in all our doings there was found Originality, with Babs in Little Theatre and Eppie in Publications. Then too, Jane, Nancy, and Sue will be Remembered for their help in War Activities. But Memories like these are matched with recollections of Fourth Formers, to whom we and “Dodo” give greetings. We will miss you. President, Margaret Hartman Vice-President, Florence Foerderer Secretary t Mary Ellen Davis Treasurer , Flurence Griffin SECOND FORM Remember what fun we had at the dance that was given before Christmas at the Wesley Heights Club . . . that was where we finally found out what the Tom’s, Dick’s, and Harry’s whom we had heard so much about really looked like . . , and the craze for learning the “cat”, that “hep” jitterbug dance — well, at least we all tried to learn! Remember, in Geometry, the compass that never worked and the queer figures that resulted from it , . , the long bicycle rides that we had whether it was cold or warm, sunshine or windy , . and the aches that followed! Remember “O Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo? ' 1 Remember study hall and those studious expres- sions we had on our faces , . , the Valentine Dance, given at Gatesley, when there were a lot of hearts on the loose and some were snagged on that memorable night . « what fun we had learn- ing those Spanish Christmas carols . . . the famous first lines of Caesar, “all of Gaul is divided in three parts.” Remember that “coke party” given by the old girls for the new in October when w r e really got acquainted . , , laughter heard daily from the French classes in room 10 , . . “Sit up,” “Head back,” “shoulders down”, those orders given at posture classes. Remember the dissection of frogs, osmosis, fission and ass im illation . . Remember them! We can’t forget them! Nor our fifty-yard dash to 4020 at lunch time. Re- member what a wonderful time we had being in the Second Form with such a swell bunch of crirls? We sure do! President) Martha M irtie) Vice-Presiden t Nancy Anderson Secretary-Treasurer Valeric Meyer FIRST FORM One of the high spots of the first semester was our attainment of Flag Honor, as our class achieved the highest citizenship average in the Preparatory School, We had two representatives in the Little Theatre Group, and both of these girls had parts in the Christmas and Spring Plays. Naturally, we all enjoy athletics and this year, In addition to basketball, hockey, and badminton, we have participated in ice skating and bicycling. Bicycling has been very popular, for the roads and scenery in Spring Valley have added greatly to the enjoyment of the rides. Our first year at Mount Vernon has been a most happy one, and we arc looking forward with great expectancy to the Fall, when we shall enter the Second Form, ADDRESSES Betty Board man Anne Brinton Frances Briscoe Jean Davis Joan Dimmitt Lynn Dwyer Elizabeth Ellis . Remember to tune in next decade for more news and keep the dial set at station M, V, S for ' One Man’s Family’, starring Isabelle Kar- sunky, which follows immediately.” IN RETROSPECT Will we ever forget the Class of ’44? We came from all pans of the country; most of us were in a daze trying to understand each other’s Southern drawls and having to contend with mid-western r’s; hominy grits were forgotten in favor of a hasty cup of coffee Not like previous years was it? Different surrroundings ; long hikes up to lunch at 4020; an accumula- tion of bus transfers; and our daily rides with “Herby”! Unforgettable too, were our sloppy moccasins, tweed skirts, wings pinned on baggy sweaters, velvet bands and long bobs, as we gazed longingly at the smooth sophistication of GarfinckePs clothes You must remember 3:15 on Fridays as the day students gaily discussed weekend plans and the boarders returned to Glenbrook and Gates] y, anticipating letter- writing and Frank Sinatra For weeks in advance the main topics of conversation were the notoriously gay week-ends in New York and Annapolis In the limelight were frequent visits to the Hot Shoppe and Nick ' s Dances at Wesley Heights and the Sulgrave Club were loads of fun even though Uncle Sam was hard to cope with However, life was not all bliss! Do you recall the fumes of H2S mingling with the odors of formalde- hyde . the lab students usually being late for their next period session with Hamlet . writing 20-page Spanish themes and trying to comprehend Confucian principles w r hile we were putting our homework off all weekend and always finding the alarm clock set for five a m on Monday We will always remember the thrill at Constitution Hall while listening to the symphonies, the glittering Ice Capa des, the Little Theater’s Christmas Play and their benefit production for the Red Cross; how deeply moved we were after hearing Mrs. Currier read “Silence of the Sea” What ever happened to the strict diets which we faithfully decided to follow for two weeks before every vacation? Looking back we will remember the wonderful times, lasting friendships and the enthusiastic spirit at M.V.S, MISS “M.V.S ” Eyes . _ ___ ... .......... ..Anne Brinton Nose - — — - ji e Gi 8h Complexion -Lil.
