f ount ernon eadem lendale, California T WAS a nex er to be forgotten OCCHSIOH Early IH the afternoon of March 21 1943 cld teachers students and friends began pour1ng 1nto the par lol of the San1tar1um Nu ses Home until s1xty five were present Father Time had made nan5 changes so each wore an identification slip ProfessorW T Bland was escorted to the golden chair the Seat o hcnor On his rlght sat N W Law 1en e and on his left W H Wakeham In a cordial address of welcome Albert W Lane greeted the visitors Roy F Cottrell was acclaimed chairman and master of ceremonles he having the d1st1nc t1 n of bein the only representatlve present fro n the fnst graduatlng class tClass of 18983 Margaret Kessler Brandstater was chosen secretary Elder E K Slade who f01 seven years served as Presldent of the Mt Vernon Academy Board asked God s bless n upon the gathermg and Helen Morse Ste1nel one of the rare song b1rds hom Mt Vernon touchingly rendered I Love a Little School House that IS BU1ldlHU Men for God one has failed This was the opening thought expressed by our cha1I'man ln his character1st1c s ul stirring remarks and he declared that in a special way those who came rom Mt Vernon Academy could appreclate the vxords of thls text Then to unbend and TGVIVG the spirit of other days he read the major portlon of the poem A Tr1p Through the Land of Anthi opology written forty eight years ago by Elder Charles L Taylor first Blble teacher of the Academv a unique produc tion of humor and pathos whlch mentloned the name of every teacher and student then connected w1th the school The words were read And now lnoflice grand There sat 1n cha1r of state Professor Bland and the first prmclpal f M V A was presented by the chairman He arose a dignified well preserved silvery haired gentleman whose eigty one years have only slightly impaired h1s sight and hearing He acknowledged a llttle embarrassment at bemg scenery as he called It then gave a most lnterestlng rec1tal of early experiences when the Mt Vernon San1tar1um was discontmued and the Academy opened ln the Fall of 1893 with a group of only th1rty two students and with six teachers employed It was a d1scourag1ng outlook vet before the close of that first school year over one hun dred students had enrolled Through Mrs E G VVh1te God had counselled the es tabhshment of that educational 1nst1tut1on and Professor Bland declared that his confidence 1n the Sp1r1t of Prophecy had been strengthened and confirmed by the 1 101111 0 O Y - l - l . .
