while King converted to a male dorm. In April 1986 it was the King girls vs. non- King girls battling for dorm room rights; in September 1986 it was the King guys vs. maintenance battling to ca- mouflage their floral de- cor. Imagine a guy’s room with blue walls and a teddy- bear border, Increased enrollment also brought variety to campus in the way of clothing and hair styles. The salvation army look was in, the psychedelic tie-dye shirts returned, paint- ed jeans were hip, and Ree- boks were everywhere. A guy wearing an earring was no longer “‘suspicious’’ |look- ing; it became a sign of virile status. As for the hair coif- fure, one may let the bangs hang over one eye, or simply braid a tail. But, hairstyles of 1986-87 sports season can- not go unmentioned. Week- ly, football players took ra- zors to their heads in team spirit, carving zebra stripes, checkerboards, or their playing numbers into their scalps. On the opposite ex- treme the soccer players modeled the long-lock Euro- pean look. IN perspective of Mount’s population increase, growth in number spells progress as more ideas are sparked and more initiatives are taken. Hopefully, the voices of con- cerned students expressed in the Dynamo and The Oth- er will stir constructive criti- cism towards further changes. We extended dorm hours, we may get a new track, and opportuni- ties could open for new dorms, additional academic electives, and more!

An Altered State n recollection of 1987, what surfaces in many up- perclassmen’s minds was the tremendous effect Novem- ber 30, 1985 had on shaping the upcoming school year. The championship football game in blustery Augustana, Raiders vs. Vikings, may not have become the sole con- tributor to the increased en- rollment in 1987, but it can’t be denied that this event was a stepping stone for Mount’s popularity and growth as enrollment at oth- er private schools across the nation declined. Sometimes we felt the stress of 1,100 students squeezed on a one-bloc- plus campus we call home. Finding a parking space was either blind fate or illegally filed ... especially the ever popular handicapped zone in front of HPCC. Slater's turned into noontime mad- ness as students rushed for prime “scoping” positions at vacant tables. The lines were especially long at the registrar's office because some freshmen were closed-out of three of their five classes. More freshmen meant more minors, which in turn, stirred more legal precau- tions for one’s “method” of partying. Despite govern- ment threats to increase the drinking age, partying never minutely neared extinction. As the saying goes: if there’s a will, there’s a way... and the Bierhaus always seemed to be the way Don't forget the residen- tial changes. Small houses were now occupied by girls. East became a female dorm
