Under the direction of second year coach Merry Ormsby, the Purple Raider women defeated the fifth place finisher in the state; twice outscored Lakeland C.C. which defeated Mount Union three times last year and avenged a regular season loss to Ohio Wesleyan, in the state tournament. Tom Anasis, Tim Bryan, and Dave Gonzaiez all had fine seasons under rookie coach, Dick Giese. 72 EEE 4 has ; ae ?, es Ww Si hn ORO iis OREN O's The women netters faced stiff competition during the 1979 season. Coach Marjorie Cook stated that ‘the caliber of tennis has improved greatly, which makes any schedule hard.” She also remarked that because Mount Union is a small college, many girls participate in more than one sport, thus there is no specialization in tennis as there is in some of the larger colleges that Mount Union came up against. Marianne Mentzer held the best singles record which was 8-3. All the girls were dedicated and put in long hours of hard work. Coach Cook said that they were a fine group to work with and predicted a good season next year because there will be many returning players with a great amount of experience and talent. Playing one of the most difficult schedules in Mount’s soccer history, including powers such as The University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie-Mellon University and Wooster, the Purple Raiders finished in third place in the Northern Division of the Ohio Athletic Conference. In conference action, the booters lost only two games, both in overtime, to powerful Wooster and to a surprising Oberlin squad that went on to win the division title. Much of the team’s success was due to a fine group of senior athletes who made up the nucleus of the squad. Leading the way were senior co-captains Bob Rockwood and Mike Vienna, both four year letterman. Seniors Ray Bassel, Jim Donahue, Phil Francis, Mark Miller, Todd Peters and Rich Reynolds also provided valuable experience and leadership. Although the Mount squad will be losing several key players due to graduation, a number of returning underclassmen hope to provide the impetus for a successful season next year. Leading scorer Jeff Halkerston will return along with defenders John Chirico, Mark Pike, George Gachichio and freshman standout Jeff Haines. a ee NSS ee ; ; inte pew | : ; pinata aa. However, despite their effort they failed to get a bid at the Ohio State tournament, a position well deserved by the team. Coach Cooke took this young group of talented women, which included five freshmen, and turned them into a very enthusiastic, mature team. Sophomore Jennifer Smith was the recipient of the Most Valuable Player Award. Because of the Spiker’s enthusiasm and consistency we can look forward to a very promising season next year. pea i=. Although not quite in the same class as the great Mount teams of the recent past, this year’s team was still respectable. Of the 16 members of the 1978 OAC champions, only 8 returned this year, due to graduations, transfers, etc. The team then lacked depth and experience. On top of this, injuries to tri-captain Don Landin, a sure All-American, and Dave Bobosky added to the team’s depth problems. Despite this, the season was still successful. Led by tri-captains Don Landin, Vic Smith, and Dave Menosky, the team had a 4-2 dual meet record, defeating Division II National qualifier Akron. They placed 5th at the OAC Relays and 4th at the conference meet, qualifying for the regional meet, where the lack of depth prevented them from going to National, although Smith and Menosky did qualify individually. Congratulations are in order for team MVP Vic Smith, who was undefeated in dual meets, OAC, and regional champion, and earned All-American status by finishing 6th and setting a school record at Nationals. The season was filled with many personal victories, and due to the ever- present help and support of Coach Hemminger and the individual coaching of some of the members of the men’s track team, they had a successful season. Throughout the track season, Mount Union was well represented by a club which had all the makings of a team. The women of the club strived to do their best hoping that next season they would be granted team status. It should be noted that Deb Sartain S received “Most Valuable Runner” and Becky Beatty was awarded “Most Improved”. In its first home game, played under the shadow of the Goodyear Blimp as well as a full Parent’s Day crowd, Mount annihilated the hapless Yeomen of Oberlin, 54-14. During the game the defense directly accounted for two of Mount’s touchdowns to help blow the game open. Before an optimistic Homecoming Day crowd, Mount Union took on defending NCAA Division III Champions, Baldwin-Wallace. Unfortunately the home team lost by a final score of 7-35. In the final game of the year, the conference play-off at Wooster, Mount capped a fine year by defeating the Fighting Scots 24-14. This victory, over one of the better defensive teams in the OAC, allowed Mount to finish at an over-all 5th place in the Conference. The big offensive thrust this year was supplied by the running of Claude Charlillo, whose nine game rushing total of 976 yards produced a 4.2 yards per carry average as well as ten touchdowns. At the Fall Sports Banquet, Claude was also voted the Most Valuable Offensive Player Award. Defensively, the Raiders were led by MVP Dan Boros, a defensive back who had eight interceptions. This year served as a building base for the future. The varsity was composed of nine freshman, three juniors and two seniors. The Purple Raiders had an excellent winter trip, coming back to Ohio with an 8 — 3 record. However, they had a frustrating time with their OAC opponents, losing six games by six points or less. Leading Mount Union's attack this season were junior Curtis Bloxson, senior Tim Cope and junior John Wallace. Bloxson, a 6-3 forward, led the team in scoring with a 14.3 points per game average. He also paced the squad in rebounding with 170 caroms. Cope, one of the squad’s co- captains and a 6-4 forward, finished second in scoring with a 13.5 points per contest average. Cope led the team in assists with 89 and was the second leading rebounder with 160 rebounds. Wallace, a 6-1 guard, rounded out the Purple Raider’s balanced offensive attack. He chipped in with 13.4 points per game, shooting 50% from the floor. Senior co-captian Mike LaPenta led the team in steals with 32 and contributed 69 assists. More than 200 persons attended the annual event that featured the students, modeling fall and winter fashions provided by Lingenfelter-Brill of Alliance. More than 25 outfits for sportswear as well as evening attire were modeled, with 1979-80 fashions emphasizing tweeds and corduroys, plus soft leather boots, shoes, belts, and jackets for both men and women. Male models for the show included Curtis Bloxson of Warrensville Heights, Craig Eppler of Paines- ville, Shawn Jones of Coshocton, and Steve Ryan of Iselin, New Jersey. Freshmen women chosen to model included Judianne Dunlap of Poland, Pam Hickson of South Euclid, Julanne Kata of Wellsville, Sandy Kehres of New Washington, Lynn Lattanner of Columbus, Peggy McDonald of Morrow, Annette Misciskia of Girard, Anna Pachan of Canton, Kim Parcell of Canton, Liz Rayburn of Boardman, Kathie Shields of Lisbon, and Carol Thompson of Lorain. The week started on Monday with students being entertained by the musical group JR4 during dinner in the cafeteria. And on Tuesday, an old-fashioned square dance complete with an authentic dance cal- ler, was held in the campus center. Wednesday, the college community observed Mount Union’s 133rd Founder’s Day. A morning con- vocation program featured N. Yost Osborne, college historian and director of the college library, and the Mount Union College Concert Choir. Activities con- tinued with a women’s swim meet against Case West- ern Reserve and Muskingum in the Timken Natato- rium, a barbecue outside the campus center, and the annual Associated Women Students Fall Fashion Show. Thursday featured the I ATA PIE awards for the most “popular” students, faculty members, and ad- ministrators on campus. Elected by a campus-wide poll, the pies in-the-face were “delivered” during dinner in the Hoover-Price Campus Center. Later the same evening, a campus “County Fair” featuring food, booths, and displays offered by various campus or- ganizations, was held in Memorial Hall. Friday was designated as Mount Union College Homecoming Queen — Marquita Bedway Spirit Day. The day’s activities included a women’s volleyball match with Baldwin-Wallace and Muski- ngum and a Celebrity Series Concert featuring McGuinn, Clark, and Hillman. The Torch Light Parade and football rally were cancelled because of rain. But the rain did not dampen the spirit of Homecoming Day on Saturday. A cold, but clear morning included a parade led by the Mount Marchers and featuring floats built by campus organizations. The winning float award was presented to the TriDelt’s and SAE’s for their covered wagon. Other activities included a soccer match with Wooster, a cross country meet with Ohio Wesleyan, and a football game with Baldwin-Wallace. Halftime activities featured the Mount Marchers and the crowning of the 1979 Homecoming Queen. Marquita Bedway, representing the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority, was crowned by last year’s queen, Laurie Elias. The 1979 Homecoming Court included Connie McGinnis representing Alpha Xi Delta sororit y, Sue Mikita representing Delta Delta Delta sorority, Naoko Oyabu representing the independent students, Harion Simpson representing the Black Students Union, Cathey Stricker representing the independent students, and Holly Yehnert representing Alpha Chi Omega sorority. The Purple Raiders football squad was handed their first defeat of the season, losing 7-35 to a tough Baldwin-Wallace team. Even so, the week’s festivities ended on a good note, with the traditional Homecoming Dance which was held in Memorial Hall. 128 Left to right: Connie McGinnis, Naoko Oyabu, Sue Mikita, Marquita Bedway, Harion Simpson, Cathey Stricker, and Holly Yehnert. 129 130 Bridal Show The 11th annual Associated Women Students Bridal Boutique proved to be a “Main Event” for more than 300 people who attended on February 21. The show, held in the Hoover Price Campus Center, provided prospective brides with a look at all the latest bridal fashions and accessories. Fashions were furnished by The Wedding Ring, Peggy’s Bridal of Greenford and Louisville, and Mr. Formal Tux Shop of Canton, while many area merchants displayed everything else a bride could need. The show, co-chaired by Karen Cramblett and Lori Krochta, fea- tured a sampling of new spring and summer attire for the entire bridal party. Dr. and Mrs. John Saffell modeled fashions for the parents of the bride. Models for the show included: Vicki Beatty of Delta Delta Delta; Suzanne Blickensderfer, an independent student; Lisa Bullock of Alpha Delta Pi; Karen Hanson, an independent student; Kay Laughlin of Alpha Chi Omega; Pat Thomas of Alpha Xi Delta; and Margo Watters of the Black Students Union. Tuxedos for the evening were modeled by: Dean Brumbaugh of Sigma Nu; Mik e Colant, an independent student; Craig Cumberworth, an independent student; Gary Dozier of the Black Students Union; Tom Herrick of Sigma Alpha Epsilon; John Hopper of Alpha Tau Omega; and Mark Miller of Phi Kappa Tau. Chairperson of the work committees that helped with the event were: Annette Gasparik, decorations; Patti Racine, publicity; Laurie Swaldo, refreshments; Lynn Ermlich, invitations; and Holly Yehnert, program cover. Cathy Varnum provided the piano accompaniment throughout the show, and afterwards wedding cake was served as the refreshment. eae pe _ etnias Cor Sindh Hs en i et Pad 131 Black History Week Black History Week was February 10 — 15. During the week, the Black Students Union sponsored many activities. On Sun- day, BSU hosted two gospel groups in Presser Hall. Special speaker for the evening was Reverend Simpson, uncle of Mount Union student Harion Simpson. Other activities included a small jazz and rhythm band in the snack bar, a disco contest, a special convocation featuring Reverend Shuttleworth of Cincinnati, and an evening with playwright Ben Pritchard from Youngstown. 132 OUTSTANDING SENIORS eT Cathey Stricker Gene Thorn re i ie Jay Groat Don Landin Kitty Nolan Kim Chaney Susan Mikita John Hopper Jim Switzer 133 134 Student Senate Li Rick | : Row 1: Jeff Verneau, Todd Whetstone, Polly Snyder, Pat Burns, Karen Cramblett, and Joy Tedrick. Putting together a yearbook can be a tough job. Choosing the right pictures to tell the story of an entire year is very difficult. A picture can convey so many thoushts and feelings. We think this book expresses Mount Union College cWee ibe }s 0% As in any other job, problems do crop up. we tried to meet these problems as efficiently as we could. we greatly appreciate everyone's patience and cooperation throughout the year! Ne realize there is still room for improvement, and we hope to pass what we have learned on to next yea zich 2 staff so they may avoid some of the difficulties we encountered. ye have learned a lot by working as co-editors At times, it was hard to be enthusiastic because there seemed! to bese incentive to keep us going. But working on a yearbook is like that. The results of all the time and labor don't appe until the year is almost over. But when that time comes and the finished yearbook arrives, it seems as tnough all the effort was worth it. Je hope that the editors next year will have a staff as terrific as ours. Je would like to take this opportunity te thank all aoe the people who helped in any way to make this yearbook a success. To Todd Schneider and Liz Mason of the pees. Information Cffice we give our deepest appreciatio Ae would also like to thank Flajer and Crosse Studios oon its assistance and offer a special thanks to our hard-working staff. | Two other men played an important role in the 1980 Unonian. Mr. John Urian, our Herff Jones repre pti was very helpful in turning our ideas into realities Jr. James Walton, our advisor, was always there with his enthusiasm and words of wisdom when we needed him most.
