During the season each member averages 15 miles daily. The Mount Harriers have continually brought honor and pride to our campus with their many achievements and the ’76 season was no different. Besides ending their dual and triangular schedule on a winning basis, the team captured many trophies from the bigger meets and relays. Yet seldom do they receive the praise and support they richly deserve. The squad was a relatively young one, of the 13 members, 6 were freshman and 3 sophomores, leaving only 4 upperclassman. With the strong showing freshman and sophomore trio displayed it will be no surprise to see Mount returning form the ‘77 National Meet as champions. Juniors also added strength and support to the team while the seniors were plagued by injuries. Tim Maloney was forced to retire before the season’s end while captain Rich Kempe had trouble holding on to his long-accustomed number one spot. Sharing the lime-light with Rich for top man was sophomore “Golden Joe” Dotson who was voted M.V.P. by his teammates. Cross Country 133 134 Cross Country football The Mount Union College Football team responded admirably to numeral stern challenges this year from teams in and out of the OAC, but finished with a disappointing 3-6 record. Many might remember the 1976 season simply as a good one to forget, but it was more of a story of hopes crushed and dreams to be fulfilled another day. Pessimism prevailed the first game of the season as the Purple Raiders were ineffective against Albion, losing, 27-0. In the next three weeks, however, outlooks brightened, as Mount Union’s offense got into gear replacing the veer with the wishbone under the new leadership of freshman quarterback Frank Mayle, and despite the loss of Mount’s all-time leading rusher, Mark Choppa, side-lined for the remainder of the season with knee and wrist injuries. First, Mount lost a close 33-32 contest to Kalamazoo but then followed with a 28-7 victory over a stunned Grove City team, and still another win, this time 7-3 over OAC rival Wooster. With an even 2-2 record the hopes and dreams of another shot at the OAC title no longer seemed distant. However, two devastating loses to Ohio Weslyan and Marietta quickly turned hopes into despair and the Raiders’ only other win was an 8-7 victory over Dennison. A losing season often fails to produce anything good but, this wasn’t the case this year. Valuable experiences were gained by a predominantly rookie defense and future stars such as Frank Mayle appeared on the horizon, it would seem that with these assets and a coaching staff that has lead many winning teams, a successful year with hopes and dreams fulfilled can not be too far away. Fortunately for Mount Union College this is not the case. In 1974 the Purple Raiders Soccer squad had a record of 12-1, and in 1975 posted a 9-1 mark. As the 1976 season opened, repeating these feats seemed questionable since there were no returning lettermen, but with the leadership of Seniors Sam Williams, John Milazzo, Mike Lee, and Fatholah Kassemi and the outstanding play of underclassmen such as Dave Csomos, Robert Rockwood, Mike Markell, Jamie Serrat and Mike Vienna, Mount Union’s Booters were soon ravaging their opponets, both in and out of the Ohio Athletic Conference. After convincing defeats of all their rivals in the wind, rain, snow, and mud of the fall months, the team took its 9- O record into the final game of the regular season against the College of Wooster Fighting Scots. With Wooster just a half of a game behind Mount Union in the standings, this game would determine the conference title and a position in the post-season playoffs. Despite a hard fight the defending champion Scots would not yield and the team fell to a 2-1 defeat. They finished with a record of 8 wins and 8 losses. The year before they were 2 and 9. With the return of all but one regular they should be even tougher in 1977. With most of last year’s team returning, things looked good for the Raiders staying on top. Starting off on the right foot were Freshman Tim Cope, who was voted OAC player of the week, and Sophomore Art Kunkle, whom it appeared would walk away with the top-rebounding spot. Another factor which seems to contribute to the successful season wa s the “TOGETHERNESS” displayed by the team. Spirit and Pep by the fans also helped to spark the Raiders on to Victory. This years team has only 2 seniors, which puts it in good standing for next year, yet, no doubt, the leadership and talent of Joey Friedrich and Scott Whetstone will be missed by all. Unfortunately, from time to time a team will experience the disappointment of a winless season as well. The girl’s basketball team almost endured such a season in 1977 despite hardy play and some spectacular individual efforts. The team was led by seniors Susan Lingler and Mavis Williams, and was often the victim of lop-sided defeats but, pulled out a 85- 54 victory over Notre Dame College in the last game of the season. Just as the pendulum swings both ways, so do fortunes in sports, the teams past may have been bleek, but the future holds nothing but promise. As the season opened the team was not only competing against its rivals but also the ever-present problem of Graduation. Returning stars, such as Gary Day, Ken Wilcox and Scott Johnson provided the confidence of a winning tradition while Mike Stuffell, Jim Bellinger, Tom Kingsley and Jeff Teece displayed winning styles of their own that took the seasons record of 6-3-1 and third place at the OAC Tournement. With this years solid and steady team returning intact, Mount Union should continue a winning tradition and make another successful transition in 1978. T. Kingley, B. Roth, K. Alterio, K. Parrill, T. The gas shortage closed the Timken pool and the swimmers were now “away” at every meet, hosting opponents at the Walsh College pool. Fine performances were turned in despite the adverse conditions. The 400 yard freestyle relay team of Mike Lee, Jim Valentine, Ed Schirl and Todd Peters drastically cut their time and convincingly whipped many rivals. Individual efforts by Valentine, just missing qualification in National competition, and Tom Herrick, bringing in three firsts against Wooster, were highlights of the year. The “men of the deep,” through indurance and perseverance, brought notoriety to Mount Union College in 1977. Under the new leadership of Coach Lyn Hemminger and with a veteran squad returning, the girls compiled a 3-1 record. The team showed a steady determination throughout the season, but was probably at its best when the freestyle relay team of Nancy Elger, Leigh Ann Sappey, Barb Roller, Kathy Sharp swam past Baldwin-Wallace in the last event to win the meet 51-44. By not giving up and falling aside, and keeping pace with their goals, the Women’s Swimming Team is assured of many successful seasons to come. 4 — ROW 1 — Carol Lampe, Leigh Ann Sappey, Lynn Clark, Barb Roller. For starters, my staff, although our workroom was far from crowded, we always managed to get our pages turned in. Paula, Robb, Kay and Cyndi — a more devoted group I’ve never met. Kevin — keeping track of our funds and keeping me from spending it all at once, Jay and Jeff — the best i) photographers an editor could ask for. Mr. James Walton — our advisor, who kept us going and Mr. John Urian — representative from H.J. Keller, who gave us the confidence to keep us working, even when we had nothing to work with, and Pam, Dave and Carol of Public Information, who gave us some of the things to work { with. Above all, | would like to thank the students and the faculty and the administration of Mount Union College, for without you there would be no 1977 Unonian.
