lg. . .. ' -as .... . Sixty-plus years of Mt. St. Mary's history Sisters of St. joseph of Carondelet founded Mount St. Mary's College in 1925 and has graduated over 6,600 students. The seniors majored in traditional liberal arts studies to specially designed programs. When it was founded, the college was conducted temporarily at St. Mary's Academy, located at Slau- son and Crenshaw in Los Angeles. In 1927, two years later, the Sisters purchased 36 acres from the Rodeo Land and Water Com any at the economical price of 54,500 per acre. Tlle new location for the college stretched out among the foot- hills of the beautiful Santa Monica mountains, 1,100 feet about sea level, overlooking much of Los Angeles and 40 miles of the Pacific Ocean. After 20 years, an additional purchase brought the Chalon campus to its present 56 acres. At its first commencement exercise, June 16, 1929, baccalaureate diegrees were awarded to 10 seniors in the charter c ass. On November 6, 1961, Mt. St. Mary's colle e was ravaged by a brush fire that heavily damage? three structures on the campus. In 1962 the college was expanded to a second cam- pus located on the Doheny Estate in central Los An- geles. The Doheny facilities compliments the educa- tional opportunities of the original Chalon campus in west Los Angeles by offerin career-oriented As- sociate degree programs as weTl as the varied gra- duate programs.
