A CGLLEGE CDN A HILL ln 1925 Bishop Cantwell, during the graduation at St. lVlary's Acade- my, pointed out the need for a college for the women of Los Angeles. He asked the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet to construct an institution of higher education comparable to the quality education given by the Sisters at St. lVlary's. By 1929 the Sisters had trans- formed a dream into reality, thirty-six acres of mountain area in Brentwood was purchased and construction began. A college on a hill. Education lifted to heights where natural environ- ment enforces its spiritual and intellectual values. There is so much of propriety in the idea that one wonders why learning did not always abide on the higher places instead of on the low. Of old, holiness sought the mountains for prayer, today eager youth mounts upward to learn. Edward F. O'Day Commentary on the order of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Carondelet 119291. Today, in 1984, at the center of this college a statue of lVlary, a woman of vision and knowledge, watches over her namesake, guid- ing the women of the college. Her outstretched arms symbolize her openness to the women before her and encourage them to accept her guidance. lVlary's open hands offer silent support to all of those who open themselves to it.
