U emo 'dam I would noT honor you wiTh flowers, lilies slim in silken albs, or roses vain in pink crimped caps. BuT if The nighT were mine To give, or yeT, The rain, I would call Them yours eTernally. Always aT nighT you would come, you, whose fingers wore by day The sTains of science. We, The home-sfarved ones, remember you by nighT- The comforT of your coming, wiTh a skirT sound sofT as feafhers of a Thrush closing on his breasT, wiTh beads ThaT chaTTed as you walked. We knew your eyes for glimpses of grey hills of home, your smile an afghan woven warm for us, candling The lonely masque of dark and rain. Yes, I would give The nighT, black-wimpled nighT, and rain, a sweeT cascade of rosary beads, if They were mine To give. I would call Them yours efernally- more, I would call Them you. -MargareT O'ConnelI Knoell '4I SISTER MARY IDA Died January 7, l950 For ThirTy-nine years SisTer Ida, The True religious Teacher, labored To acquire riches. Her childhood she gave To God: her long life she gave To God - a long life oT persisTenT, smiling, cheerful, unselfish service. Her accumulaTed wealfh-she carried iT all wiTh her. And This morning we can look up To heaven, see her welcomed by Almighfy God and given her place among The long line of sainTly ST. Joseph nuns waiiing There proudly To welcome her inTo Their sainTly miclsT. Because Thou hasT been faiThfuI over a few Things, I shall place Thee over many Things. FaiThful over a few Things - raTher leT us say faiThful over many Things - and God will place her over many more. May we who are lefT behind, sfifling our own sorrow, reioice in her vicTory. Words of Reverend Joseph A. Vaughan, S.J. aT The funeral Mass for SisTer Mary Ida on January 9, I95O. Died November I6, I949 Lord, like This candle Am I. who aspire To consume my body In my spiriT's fire . . . Alfred BarreTT, S.J. SisTer STe. Helene firsT quofed These lines To me nearly Tive years ago, and now, Thinking of her, I remember Them. I picTure her in The audiTorium of The Mounf, siTTing aT a IighT brown desk, lecluring To her freshmen. In memory, Sisfer leans back in her chair reciTing poeTry To spark young imaginaTions. She Takes off her glasses, Taps Them againsT an open book and TacTfuIIy addresses correclions To The ceiling. In her free Time, she holds uncaTaIogued seminars in conTemporary liTeraTure and kniTs blue sweaTers for innumerable nieces and nephews. Her Thoroughness shines Through in Iiffle Things: The Sign of The Cross before Taking even a glass of wafer, The in- sisTence on a specific word, a succincT reply. ln memory, The familiar phrases SisTer once said, I caTch and say again: Read books ThaT make you grow, Then measure up . . . offer each decade of your Rosary for parTicuIar inTenTion . . . go To Europe before you geT married . . . Turning The heel of a sock is The easiesf parT . . . have you ever read The auTobiography of The LiTTle Flower? . . . why don'T you wriTe poeTry. You can you know . . . love your work, I do. I wanT To die Teaching. Love was her candle. She burned iT aT boTh ends for ChrisT in Himself and in His Children. IT did noT IasT The whole nighT of Time buT burns now in The day of eTerniTy. In heaven as on earTh, iT gives a lovely light. -'Mary Joann Lindenfeld '49
