Contents INTRODUCTION SENIORS UNDERGRADUATES ACTIVITIES ADVERTISERS T H E DOMINILOG DomiHicaH Acndemy FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS Published by THE SENIOR CLASS EDITOR Ann King ASSISTANTS Mona Cantin Pierrette Lemaire Gertrude O ' Neil Patricia O ' Neil BUSINESS MANAGER Catherine McGettigan Eveline Demers 9 5 2 ASSISTANT In this time of darkness and confusion, when enemies are incessantly trying to banish God from our lives, to destroy the dignity of man and to armi- hilate the basic truths on which our nation is founded, what can be more timely for a theme than An Army of Youth flying the standards of truth, fighting for Christ the King — Youth binding itself in close unity to fight for truth under the leadership of Christ the King! To fight, one needs weapons, and we know that material weapons can never secure the peace we long for. In the Army of Christ the King, we hold weapons more dynamic than the atom bomb — the sacra- ments, through which we receive the life and help of God Himself; prayer, including the Rosary, called by some the atom bomb of grace; sacrifice . . . On earth ' s battlefield . . . with the cross our only sword . . . never a vantage we ' ll yield ... as dauntlessly on we swing . . . ' neath the Queen ' s white and blue, for our flag, for our Faith, for Christ the King! -I- ivy Christ the Eucharistic King reigns in the majestic splendor of Forty Hours Devotion in the convent chapel. {On opposite page) Statue of Christ at Fatima, Portugal. MOST REVEREND JAMES E. CASSIDY D.D., LL.D. Bishop of Fall River 1934 — 1951 Steward of God — so Saint Paul said his bishop should be and so the Apostle would have hailed this bishop: keeper of the keys for God, guardian of the good things of God, trustee for God of the church in Fall River — this high priest was faithful to his stewardship. . . . This bishop, though dead, still speaks. It will be years before the echo of his authori- tative and apostolic voice dies in this diocese. For he was a bishop without blame . . . able to exhort in sound doctrine and to confute opponents! May his valiant soul rest in peace! May his example be ever before our eyes! From the Funeral Eulogy preached by Most Reverend Richard J. Gushing, D.D. May 22, 1951 DEDICATION TO CHRIST THE KING in memory of our beloved Bishop Most Reverend James E. Cassidy, D.D. The 1952 Dominilog is lovingly dedicated by The Seniors Vkar of Christ, the Sternal King His Holiness Pope Pius XII ■X .... The fifteenth centenary of the Council of Chalcedon occurs during this present year. It is fitting that such a joyful event as this be celebrated, both in Rome and in the whole Catholic world, with those solemnities which, with heart filled with gratitude to God, the Giver of all salutary counsel. We are happy to ordain. ... It is Our Wish, Venerable Brethren, that when, through your efforts, the holy Council of Chalcedon is commemorated, on that occasion all be urged to adhere with total loyalty to Christ Our Redeemer and King. Let no one . . . either shake by doubt or pervert by harmful innovation the dogma ratified by Chalcedon, that in Christ there are two true and perfect natures, the divine and the human, which are joined together, but not confused, subsisting in the one person of the Word. Rather let all, united closely with the Author of our salvation. Who is the Way of holy living, the Truth of divine teaching, and the Life of eternal happiness, love in Him their restored human nature, respect their restored Iberty, and, putting away the foolishness of senile world- lings, pass on in joy to the ageless wisdom of spiritual childhood. Pope Plus XII, EncycHcal Letter SEMPITERNUS REX September 8, 1951 I Apostle of Christ the K ' mg, Our Wishop . . . May Christ ' s words: ' Peace be to you. As the Father hath sent me, so I send you ' , be true for us and of our way of living each day of our Hfe. May His prayer be illustrated by our deeds: Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done; Forgive us as we forgive those who trespass against us. May our conscience, sensitive to all that the Lord has done for us, make us resporisive to each day ' s opportunity of continuing the mission of Our Lord on earth . . . Let us never forget what we commemorate today. Our Lord is come; He gives Himself t o us. We receive Him reverently, this day, in Holy Communion. He is become part of us. He shares our nature. He has become like to us that He might make us in spirit and truth like unto Him. He has become our best Christmas gift to transform us, and to change us for the better . . . O wonderful exchange! the Creator of humankind, assuming the form of man, has lavished on us His Divinity, has given us to share in Him that we might give Him in return of ourselves. Let us not be slow to do our part. The world will be the better for it. Bishop Connolly, sermon at Midnight Mass, 1951. His Excellency MOST REVEREND JAMES L. CONNOLLY, D. D., Ph.D. Bishop of Fall River Reverend Edward J. Gorman, M.A. Superintendent of Diocesan Schools Besides devoting himself unsparingly to keeping our schools at their highest possible efficiency throughout our grade and high school years, our diocesan Superintendent of Schools, Father Gorman, has been kind enough to mani- fest his interest in our welfare by encouraging the various projects we undertake. His presence at our modesty fashion show and his gracious words of encouragement on that occasion and since then have given us new courage in this enterprise, one of the campaigns undertaken by our Army of Youth. Reverend Vincent Ferrer McHenry, O.P. Professor of Theology in Providence Col- lege, Father McHenry came to Dominica i the first Tuesday of each month to give expert advice to seniors and juniors on how best to use those powerful weapons of the Army of Christ, the Sacraments and prayer. The lively discussions that followed each month ' s lesson cleared up many important problems for us. Those Tuesd ay classes were highlights through- out the year. Reverend Terence J. Sullivan, O.P. Also a Professor of Theology in Providence College, Father Sullivan began his monthly lessons for freshmen and sophomores in Decem- ber, to the delight of those undergrads. Cover- ing the most important religious topics in his lessons, he also took time to give clear and convincing answers to all questions submitted by his class. That ' s one period that never drags, say sophs, frosh. Alter Chtistus - Another Christ OUR PASTORS ... Christ ' s life on earth was soon run, His task quickly done. The brief years hastened to their culmination in the Sacrifice of the Cross, and He was soon gone from the sight of men. But Christ ' s work was to overflow the narrow bounds of His earthly years, to extend out across the centuries to all times and all peoples. Having come as a man, to save men, it would be through men that the Son of God would offer Himself to the Father ... In His priesthood He guaranteed the continuance of the sacrifice to which all His life had aimed. Each priest means another Christ, another altar, another renewal of Calvary ... (DOMINICANA, June, 1938). These are our Pastors. Devoted entirely to God and His Church, like tireless generals in the Army of Christ they give us our spiritual weapons and outline the plan of righteousness that will enable us to participate in the eternal victory of Heaven. Happy are you to have so soon discovered the joy and peace that come to those who make Christ the King the center of their lives and activity, who live and work, as the words of the Mass express it, through Him and with Him and in Him ... In our prayerful wishes for your success and happiness in time and eternity, we cannot do better than exhort you to continue to keep your lives Christ- centered. Dedicate your homes to Him; keep as close as you can to Him and to His Blessed Mother day by day. Con- tinue to make the best possible use of the weapons that made your Army of Youth invincible - — particularly the sacraments and prayer, including the daily Rosary. In so doing, you will have Christ and Mary as your strength and consolation in whatever life may bring you, and the best wishes and brightest hopes of your faculty for each one of you will be realized. To find and possess truth, we must seek for it. Here in our senior homeroom we did much of our searching for truth. We planned our Student Co-operative Government in the hope that it would train us in responsibility and initiative; we studied our religion earnestly, discussed it, inquired about it; we delved into Catholic reading in books, pamphlets, magazines, notably our Catholic Digest, which we read every month; we worked out the details of the various campaigns undertaken by our Army of Youth; we dreamed, too, about the final achievement of our high school days. Isn ' t that wonderful! Seniors were delighted at the announcement. The new statue of the Sacred Heart pictured above was a center of devotion in the chapel during the entire retreat. Jl REV. CAMILLUS MEAGHER, SS.CC. Christ wishes to reign over every country, every home, every individual heart, Fr. Meagher told us during retreat and at the Enthronement of the Sacred Heart which climaxed the three days. Hymns and prayers to the Sacred Heart featured every exercise, with the theme song, Christ the King, recurring regularly. (Below, left): Fr. Meagher reads the Act of Consecration at the Enthronement ceremony. (Right): School president Pierrette Lemaire reads the students ' consecration. 46 Facing the statue are class presidents (left to right] P. Lemaire, M. Scholes, J. Maltais, M. Walker, G. Delahanty, who carried lighted candles in the procession, and highest honor seniors E. Lajoie and G. O ' Neil, who cairied baskets of flowers. Having recited the Litany of the Sa- cred Heart during the procession from the chapel to the first floor corridor, D. A. ' s Army of Youth here sing one of the closing hymns of the Enthronement ceremony. They have just recited the dedication prayers which were to make Dominican a special home for Christ the King. They ' ll never forget us now! D.A. will always remember us and our year- book theme! Seniors look with satisfaction on the new statue which is their gift to D.A. Gift of Class ' 52 — the inscription will remind Dominican of its debt to the girls who worked to make D.A. truly an Army of Christ the King. All students were deeply impressed by the solemnity and piety of the Enthrone- ment ceremony. Retreat 1952 was a spiritual landmark. RETREAT MEMORIES LINGER. Well, after looking since last September, we should have a lead on it. Glee Club members discuss their journey in song from their Home Sweet Home to the deep South on the Swanee River looking for the Lost Chord , one of their favorite melodies from a long list of se- lections. These songbirds meet each Monday at 9:45, and after a few minutes of warming up exercises they break into a sea of melody. When each year they sing at the Eastern Massa- chusetts Music Festival, all the hard work and prac- ticing proves worthwhile. They also show what they have accomplished in an annual Spring Concert. Stairs, stairs, and more stairs! Do they never end? After four years you get used to it. Don ' t give up, Freshie. You ' re almost there, orchestra members comment, as they make the long trek to the fourth floor for rehearsals. Couldn ' t we take the elevator? And get caught! Nothing doing! Nothing is more welcome than the regular pro- grams the orchestra prepare for their special occasions: carols for the Christmas assembly, St. Cecilia program, Class Day music. Dear St. Patrick must be as delighted as Dominicans are to hear those gay Irish tunes which get one of the biggest hands of the year as the orchestra makes them ring out while all D.A. gathers to cele- brate the wearing of the green. Orchestra officers: President, Gloriette Levesque; vice-president, Vivian Francoeur; secretary-treasurer, Pauline Sorel; librarian, Elizabeth Lajoie. THE STRING ENSEMBLE, organized this year, surprised everybody by the excellence of their playing in their first recital March 9. Classical music and Gems of Long Ago made up a pleasantly varied program that showed the skill and industry of the four violinists and their accompanist, Mrs. Wilson. Mrs. Viola L. Wilson, Doris Beaulieu, Pauline Morin, Marie Cross, Gloriette Levesque. SIGHT- SEEING brings semrs culture, fun {Top left): Everybody is in a hurry to board the chartered bus and be off for the day of sight-seeing, the annual senior outing, October 10. At Bunker Hill, cameras click steadily, although the sun obstinately refuses to shine, and low-hanging clouds threaten. These smiling faces will be some- what less radiant after the long climb to the top of the monument — 194 steps, and no elevator! On the U.S.F. Constitution, Boston Harbor, T. Postiglione and V. The House of the Seven Gables in Salem makes literature come to life as seniors enter by the shop door and explore the old mansion made famous by Hawthorne ' s tale. The secret staircase leading from the living room on first floor to Clifford ' s room on third provides the greatest thrill. Up the rickety steps to the garret, down to Phoebe ' s room, then back again to first floor and out to the garden. (Top, left to right): Seniors pause before the shop door. A. King and V. Dube got up so high she couldn ' t get down and had to be res- cued by a gallant knight. Orchard House, Concord, charms all lovers of Little Women with its host of reminders of the Alcotts, big and small. Hawthorne once lived here; so did Margaret Sidney, who wrote Five Little Peppers. All pix of Walden Pond were greyed out by the clouds, but seniors en- joyed seeing Thoreau ' s favorite haunt, last stop of the day. 4 (Left to right): Mrs. V. L. Wilson, co-director, accompanist; P. ' ' Make Mine Modest fashion show introduces Triple-M Club How would the SDS movement take in Fall River — the drive to demand decent clothing and accept nothing else? It has been growing steadily in other parts of the country. Dominican launched the drive by a modesty fash- ion show in May, 1951, with the class of ' 51 model- ing most of the gowns and the undergrads (pictured above) wearing other clothing. The Triple-M Club, named after the title of the show, Make Mine Modest , got off to a tentative start in October ' 51, and was still getting its feet on the ground at Dominilog deadline. A JOURNALISM gWes valuable traimng Standing room only, might be the slogan of D.A. journalism club, The Aquinette, which crowds into Room 1 every Friday morning. After a prayer to St. Thomas Aquinas, patron of the club, members get seated at desks or on folding chairs they have carried in, and settle down to study their Journalism for Today manuals or discuss plans for the next issue of The Dominican. Practice in writing various types of news stories and features helps prepare members for a place on the newspaper staff. Most of these budding journalists attend the Publications Conference for Catholic Schools at Boston College each year in May, where they get many tips on making their school paper a vital weapon in the Army of Christ. The Dominican co-editors Pier- rette Lemaire and Patricia O ' Neil (standing) discuss the assignment sheet for the next issue of the paper with Gertrude O ' Neil, lit- erary editor. The desire of mak- ing each successive issue better than the last taxes the ingenuity and industry of editors and leads to many an idea hunt. Exchanges help considerably in illustrating what to do or not to do. 56 The journalism party in June is one of the gayest of the year. Skits, parodies, refreshments, then singing and dancing to Mrs. Wil- son ' s lilting or peppy music make journalists say, This is one party I never want to miss! (Left to right): A. King, M. Editor Ann King spends long sessions study- ing yearbooks for newer and better ideas for the 1952 Dominilog. Planning the dummy is her favorite work, dreaming up each layout and picturing it as it will appear on that day of days when she can announce, The yearbooks are here! I ' m so glad we got the new elearic typewriter in time to get this yearbook copy ready for the deadline, purrs Cath- erine McGettigan as her flying fingers pick up still more speed. ackievemmt It ' s fun to plan for pictures, make lists of students for each group, spend the day with Mr. Little of Loring ' s Studios taking piaure after picture in the won- derful Loring way. Best fun of all is to pose ivith Mr. Little at the end of a day ' s work. Just see how we smile. So say Jacqueline Dube and Theresa Postiglione, photo- graph editors for the ' 52 Domini- log. Business manager Catherine McGettigan (seated) and assistant manager Eveline Demers total up their ad sales just to make sure the Dominilog will keep out of the red. Pleasantly efficient, they spared no trouble to make their ad section complete, accurate, interesting, adding the novelty of running a month by month picture story of the year through the section. This journalism typewriter is a life line in a deadline, thanks to Class ' 50, who donated the type- writer, and Class ' 51, who gave the adjustable stand, says Pierrette Lemaire, as she taps off page after page Qoing formal Junior Christmas semi-formal dance is set for December 27 at the Hotel Mellen. PHYSICAL DUCMION - a meaffs to a; e d Eight hands and around you go (above) depicts one of the many square dance figures we learned from our new physical education instructor, Miss Nancy Walsh. Her classes in social dancing also proved very popular and helped even the best of us to become a little more at ease on the dance floor. Besides dancing, our physical education program included units on basketball, volleyball, marching, organized games and calisthenics. We had a varsity basketball team as usual, and something new at DA which was enjoyed By all was the intramural basketball tournament, an out- growth of our basketball classes. (Second row): Vivianne Francoeur, Joan Hick- ey, Jean Riley, Marcella Antonelli, Helene Methot (Manager), Cath- erine McGettigan, Jacqueline St. Laurent. VARSITY BASKETBALL TEAM We had our share of wins and losses, and as always, that old DA spirit prevailed. Stars of the season were Marcy Anton- elli, Vivianne Francoeur and Catherine McGettigan, whose ex- pert defensive play helped us out of many a tight spot. Under Miss Walsh ' s skillful and patient guidance we mastered the intricacies of zone defense, learned to cut, to screen, to pivot, and all the rest, but more important than the skills learned were the attitudes developed. We learned to live by a code of sportsmanship. We found out that winning isn ' t as important as playing, and that courtesy is something that lasts not only through four eight-minute quarters but throughout our lives. (Left): Sounding off for DA are our cheerleaders; Patricia Patricelli, Sheila Smith, Madalena Sousa, Jacqueline Dube, Georgette Gagnon.
