Like many of the other depart- ments in the school, the budget cuts took some items from the PE Department. The department had hopes of purchasing an in- door archery net so that the unit could be taught indoors rather than trying to depend on the weather. They also lost many ex- tra pieces of equipment such as basketballs, badminton rackets, etc. The PE Department made some slight changes in the cur- riculum in the upper division units. Students who signed up for PE 3- 4 had the choice of selecing either individual sports or team sports. The team sports section was then divided into two sections: one which was geared for the com- petitive students, and the other for the students just hoping for leisure activity. Overall, the department met the needs of the student popula- tion. The elective classes were all filled with girls taking on the challenge of weight training with the guys. 1. 152 Science The Science Department, with teachers, Mr. White, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Halstead, Mr. Berhndt, and Mr. Knoll, was hit hard by the many budget cuts. For example, all field trips were cancelled including the yearly trip to Fort Flagler. ln spite of this, the Bugs class worked hard at fund raising. Dogfish, fetal pigs, and starfish were purchased for dissection. Also, individual projects such as salt and fresh water aquariums, a beehive, greenhouse, life on the moon, wind power, bacterial studies, hampsters, and mice were studied. Mr. Berhndt's goal for the Science Department was, 'to pro- vide all students with an ex- perience in science that they will remember. Obviously, the lack of funds did not help, but an ex- cellent effort made by both students and teachers made up for the deficit! 1. Danny Schroeder turns his head away because he cannot stand the smell of the fetal pig. 2. Jill Laskodyis relieved that she is not the one to cut the pig open. 3. Lars Petersen could not withhold his smile. It just comes naturally! S W --th
