six, ,, Wi. 5511143 U gg, pg Wfl' Social Studies was a very stable department. No new teachers were added, and the budget cuts had little effect. Perhaps the only major change was one of the title, Mr. Clifford the bachelor became Mr. Clifford the married man. Congratulations to Mr. Clifford and his new wife, Elaine Clifford Qformerly Swansonj. One of the major Social Studies extracurricular activities, Close- Up, was continued this year. Close-Up is a program that gives students a chance to go to Washington D.C. to observe our government in action. Students who have gone to Close-Up have enjoyed it immensely, and the fact that it is supported by dona- tions means that it should be around for students to enjoy for years to come. lik 1. Mr. Clifford explains something to Marci King, while Wendy Querro and Melissa Lems takes a break. 2. Dan Hagen is caught reading the fun- nies. 3. Dale Harris and Chris Eads look shock- ed. 4. An unidentified student blocks her beautiful face. 5. Jeff Hendrickson day dreams about last night! Social Studies 151

ili- u 150 English M . English Department objectives were limited by budget cutbacks. Necessary classroom purchases such as textbooks were delayed because of lack of funds. Class sections were decreased and one English teacher, Mrs. Hargraves, was switched mainly to the Counseling Center. Results have been larger classes and fewer electives. Special Services, formerly Special Education, was affected by these cuts. Consisting of three sections: Math, Language Arts, and Vocational Education, this program gave those with learning disabilities whatever individual help as was needed. Mainstreaming, the practice of putting Special Services students into graduation requirement classes, improved student suc- cess rate. 1. Stop picking your nose, Marc Combs! 2. Dan- ny Sisk asks questions, while David Sharon looks to see if he has enough money for lunch. 3. At it again, Cheri Higley? Guess where it will all end up. 4. Miss Jones is puzzled at the change in Mrs. Skerritt. hw. .- rw g '54, . X ififz f 9. 1, ctr?- Yeti

152 Science The Science Department, with teachers, Mr. White, Mr. Johnston, Mr. Halstead, Mr. Berhndt, and Mr. Knoll, was hit hard by the many budget cuts. For example, all field trips were cancelled including the yearly trip to Fort Flagler. ln spite of this, the Bugs class worked hard at fund raising. Dogfish, fetal pigs, and starfish were purchased for dissection. Also, individual projects such as salt and fresh water aquariums, a beehive, greenhouse, life on the moon, wind power, bacterial studies, hampsters, and mice were studied. Mr. Berhndt's goal for the Science Department was, 'to pro- vide all students with an ex- perience in science that they will remember. Obviously, the lack of funds did not help, but an ex- cellent effort made by both students and teachers made up for the deficit! 1. Danny Schroeder turns his head away because he cannot stand the smell of the fetal pig. 2. Jill Laskodyis relieved that she is not the one to cut the pig open. 3. Lars Petersen could not withhold his smile. It just comes naturally! S W --th
