IEXPIEIIIIE CE I IJIEMIICII CY OPPORTUNITIES for practicing citizenship in the field of safety were examined hy the Drivers' Safety Council. The council found numerous instances where they could profitahly work to increase the safety hahits of hoth the high school and the grade school students. Early in the fall. the majority of the student drivers registered with the Drivers' Safety Council. By doing so. they were assured that the Council would handle any violation which they might commit. The result was the reaping of a crop of' more safety conscious drivers and pedestrians among high school students, ln instances where violations were committed. the council held trials in an air of seriousness which made the offender realize the danger of his carelessness. Thus. the Council not only staged a safety campaign, hut they followed up hy seeing that the students measured up to the standards that were set. The Drivers' Safety Council. advised hy Mr. Beamer. undertook another task that of patroling the highway crossings, The Council itself merely enlisted volunteers to patrol the streets and then supervised all the details of the proiect. lt soon hecaine apparent that the atmosphere created hy the safety program was influencing the younger students as well as the high school students to adopt higher safety standards for pedestrian conduct.
