UU Mn Alanson W Wllacw McDermoth It was raining hard that day, and the mud was deep at the new school. The chemistry teacher, seeing one of his students stuck, came to pull him out. The boy lost a shoe. Student and teacher joined in a hearty laugh, then probed for the missing footwear. Since that day in MSAC's infancy, walks have been built, and it is no longer necessary to pull students into class. Nevertheless, Mr. Alanson W. McDermoth has been giving friendly assistance to students ever since. He believes that a teacher should adapthimself to students' needs as he finds them in any group. His enjoyment of teaching lies in helping each -one to get somethin-g. That this Usomethingn amounts to a great deal can be attested to by the number of visiting graduates who pay calls on Mac when back on campus. In their undergraduate days many of them have gathered at his home to study for an exam or to sit around and talk over their problems. The warmth and friendliness of the McDermoths make their home a popular place. This teacher won the first Oscar awarded by a grateful student body to a faculty member for his participation in student activities. He never says no when it is humanly possible to say yes to demands on his time and energy. His sincere interest and sense of humor make him a welcome member of any group. No less popular with teachers than with students, Mr. McDermoth became the first president of the Faculty Club. Today he is head of the Chemistry Department and is proud that many of his students have gone on to distinguish themselves in the field of science. Born in Aberdeen, Washington, Mr. McDermoth came to college in California, where he earned his B.S. and M.S. degrees at Stanford Uni- MVLA versity. He went to France with the A.E.F. in World War I. At its end he attended the University of Toulouse for several months. In 1923 he began teaching at Pomona High School and Iunior CollegC- In the spring of '42 he entered World War II as an Air Force CQPWH m charge of Preflight School at Santa Ana. He was Lt. Colonel McDermoth when he came out in the spring of '46. - Organizer of the chemistry program at MSAC, he taught all the chem- istry classes during the first years. Both his son Iames and daughter Nancy are MSAC graduates, and Mrs' McDermoth has worked here as a secretary during summer school sessions. She is now employed by the United Fund. Community minded and working as a team, the McDermoths have given a great deal of community service in their home town, Pomona, and both are active in the Congregational Church there. Both welcome Stn- dents to their home and share in the same philosophy of warmth, friendli- ness and helpfulness. To them students are number one people. . At school Mr. McDermoth, as Athletic Manager, arranges transportaI10I1 for our teams for trips away from the campus. He represents the admin- istration in the rentals and rental arrangements of both stadium and gYI1'1' nasium to other schools. He has taken students to student government conferences and has been advisor of the Engineering Club. Serving the school in yet another capacity, Mr. McDermoth was the living model for the caricature, our beloved i'Little Ioe. Friendship for students and a wonderful sense of humor made him a natural for this. His sincere interest and friendliness have had great influence in l'liS students' development of a personal philosophy while in college, and he has won their wholehearted love and respect. We will miss him greatly when he retires at the end of this school year- by Lucille Lander l s First Ro 5 .N l Ns Ya .
