THE MOUNT 1985 7V37 V9-. f- 31509« RUTLAND FftEC UBftAKY XO COURT 5TRm UtrriAtiD, VERMONT £3701-4099 Dear Graduates of 1985: I extend to you sincere congratulations as you complete your high school years at Mt. St. Joseph Academy. As you leave I pray that you take with you many happy memories of peaceful, God-filled moments, times of growing, friendship forming, commitment keeping, and academic learning. In following St. Paul's advice to set aside childish ways,' never give up the child-like ways of youth. Continue to enjoy the enjoyable, to weep in the losses, to pursue the excellent, and to let love permeate your entire life. God will never leave you, and I will encourage you to remain very close to Him in all the events of your life. May the roads rise with you and the winds be at your back May the Lord hold you in the palm of his hand. Sister Shirley A. Davis God bless you. A dedication is a page set aside to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of one person to a particular class. This year, the graduating class of 1985 would like to dedicate their year to a teacher who has helped us learn, a coach who has helped us grow, and a friend we can count on. This person has always been there (better late than never) at sports events and plays. She has encouraged us to do our best. With love, we the class of 1985 dedicate our yearbook to Mrs. Jennifer Bagley. 6 i Class of 1985 7 Is my hair okay?” Mt. St. Joseph Academy 'Thought you could fool me. eh CHEESE!! Smile Mr. Slack. Student Senate is a community-oriented group which spends most of its time working for the student body. It consists of our elected members from each class and a president chosen by the entire student body. Highlights of this year's activities were: The annual walk-a thon. $11,000 was donated to the School Board in Sister Clementine's name. Sister Shirley and Sister Clementine received donations of over $1200 for their one mile walk. This year more local businesses and organizations provided incentives for the students. Project Help '84. The gym was used for sorting, boxing, and distribut- ing food baskets for 350 families, and the entire process was accomplished in record time. Community participation in this endeavor has also sub- stantially increased. The Senate has also been involved with dances. Spring Fling, and various other school functions, as well as working with the Administra- tion. Officers are Kristian Omland, President; Karen Perry, Vice President and representative to the School Board, Joanne Halpin, Secretary; and David Austin, Treasurer. Co-moderator, Mrs. Janet Baker has described working with the Stu- dent Senate a rewarding experience because student senators are special people who give so much time in ways their classmates don't realize. Co- moderator Mr. Tim McCue describes his experience with the Student Senate as fun, fulfilling, and busy, and states further he would not trade his position as moderator for any other organization. 70 Walk-A-Thon Project Help jr 64 Jake, Shut Up! The defending State Champs worked to a 5 and 4 record in a season of many ups and downs. The Mounties returned this year with a completely new team, and the rebuild was slow. In the first game the Mounties defeated the Slaters of Fair Haven in a sloppy 14-12 game. The next game was a dismal failure losing to South Burlington 2o-0. That was when Coaches Funzie Cioffi and Tony Zingali went back to basic football. The Mounties went on to beat the Burlington Seahorses 19-8 in an inspired performance. The Mounties then won their first Southern Vermont League game against Brattleboro 17-15. Then came the rematch of the 1983 Div. I Championship game. The Essex Hornets came down to St. Peter's Field to meet a pumped up Mounties Team. Two touchdowns a piece by senior Tim Crean and junior Mike Joyce lead the Mounties to a 35-14 romp over Essex, but the celebration wasn't very long. The Tigers of Middlebury beat MSJ 20-14 on three long touchdowns on the option play. Despite a fourth quarter surge and two touchdowns by a renewed Mountic offense the Mounties came up short. The Mounties then traveled to Troy. N.Y. for a game with LaSalle Academy which the Mounties won 28-0. Then to Bennington for a SVL game with Mount Anthony. In a tough game fought, the Mounties lost 7-6. Then the climax of the season came the Rutland-MSJ game. That was to be the game to determine who was going to play Middlebury in the championship. The season finally was disappointing. The Mounties stalled in their efforts to go to the championship. The team was coached again this year by returning coaches Patty Job, Murray McGrath, and E.J. Bishop. by Odie Thompson Gail Warner X-Country Running (Heffernan's Harriers) Row 1: G. Rideout, J. The Mountic Cross-Country Running Team, as usual in the shadow of the Mountic Football team, enoyed one of its most successful seasons of the past few years. Fielding the largest boys team ever, the Mounties had one of their best finishes in the State Meet, 11th, and for the third year in a row, wound up 2nd in the Marble Valley League. The girls, on the contrary, could not field a team for most of the season, M.V.L., or State Meet. However, junior Lovisa Johnsson was the individual M.V.L. Champion and also qualified for the Meet of the Champions for the second consecutive year. Kristian Omland was the only boy to qualify for the Meet of the Champions. With many young runners returning. Coach Tom Heffernan should enjoy continued success within the next few years. by Michael Zukowski Majorettes Row I: L. Canney, B. Gallagher. Row 2: A. Miglorie, K. On November 4, everyone enjoyed the game, if you look past the bumps and bruises, which de- rived from our so-called Flag- football game. Also best performances included senior Becky Thomas leading the team to victory by a first place finish . at Quechee in a high school race. Senior Jim Crowley led the Mounties 1 to a tic for first by placing second in the same race. Lovisa Johnsson had a strong third in Queensbury and a second in the districts. Kathy Thorne's best result was a sixth place at a Mt. Top high school race. Steve Cwikowski placed seventh in Districts, and senior Bill Kimball was the top Mountie boy finisher in the State Meet. They entered the play-offs in 2nd place at 15-2 in Division II play and 16-3-1 overall. Although the team was quite young, leadership was provided by Co-Captains John Millspaugh, and Joe Ferrara as well as third year letterman Ethan Abatiell, Jay Cox, and Kelly Bombargier. This years team was characterized by an explosive offense that was mostly executed from a line of Millspaugh-Larkin-Curran. Outstanding freshman Jim Larkin led the squad in points and goals while sopho- more Paul Curran dished out the most assists as the whole first line eclipsed over 50 points; a Mountie first. John Eagan also netted a good amount of goals. Ferrara was a valuable in the nets and was provided strong defense by Cox, Bombardier, and also frosh Chris Ladabouche, and Phil Thibo- deau. Progress by frosh Greg Sabataso, Bill Chioffi, Flether Wilson, Dan Johnson, Jeff (Smurf) Randall, and Keith (Catcha Buzz) Buzzell as a goalie makes the future of the Mountie Hockey look extrememly prom- ising. by John Millspaugh (Ed. Note: Captain John Millspaugh is a strong defensive and offense player as well as a modest writer. John netted over 25 goals so far this season and also made the All-Star Team for M.S.J.) Hockey Cheerleaders: Johna Ley, Barb McElroy. 0 A Girl's Basketball GIRLS JUNIOR VARSITY TEAM E. Marshall, C. Flannery, J. Kinsman, A. Valente, S. Pitanello, M. Bourgeois GIRL'S HOOP This year's Mountie Girls Basketball team had a history making season. Coached by Ron Rideout, they had a league record of 8-7 and an overall record of 12-7. The girls were seeded 8th in the playoffs and they defeated U-32 56-45 in an exciting game. The Mounties went on to be defeated by Mill River 58-46 in a quarter final game that ended their season. This year's Mounties had 5 returning starters: four seniors-Missy Moore, Gail Warner, Odie Thompson, and Meg Terry and 1 sophomorc-Kim Le- vins. They were backed by a small but skilled bench of Michelle Eggle- ston, Lisa Howard, and Shelly Bowen. Kim Levins was the top scorer in the CVGAL league and she led the Mounties to many victories and some close defeats. A few of the girls' excit- ing victories were an exciting win over Proetor in which the Mounties were down at the half but they came back and won. Against Rutland the girls were down again but they came back to defeat the Raiders in the last . .. , _ quarter. GIRLS VARSITY BASKETBALL Coach R. Rideout, L. Howard, A. Thompson, K. Levins, M. Eggleston, G. Gail Warner Warner, M. Terry, M. Moore XL Boys Basketball The 1985 Mt. St. Joseph Academy Varsity Basketball team was almost completely different from the 1984 State Championship Team. The Mounties lost their entire starting lineup due to graduation. The '85 team was a team that had excellent individual talent that worked well together on the court, but that is also true off the court. The players were all good friends and through the season each player took on a new identity. The names you heard around the locker room weren't Farrell Quinlan or Miek or Chris, but Lip, and Ton-Ton, and Do-Mc. Other names began to creep into the locker room like Tweet, Margo, Bagle, Bones, Sally, Dino, Seaman, Cage, Ham-Breaker, Spanky, McCorn Cob, and Lachinsky. But with all of that going on, the Mounties still turned in a very successful season with Coach Dave Kinsman at the helm, by Farrell Quinlan 87 Indoor Track The 1984-1985 indoor track team had a very productive season. Their accomplishments included breaking five school records. Patty Dube set a school record in the hurdles, both Diane Pockette and Cathy Eads set the school record in the 300 yard dash, Cathy McElroy set a school record in the shotput, Cathy Eads set a school record in the 60 yard dash and the 4 x 200 relay team consisting of Dube, Pockette. Eads, and Theresa Manseau also set a new school record. This realy team became the first to make it to the Eastern Meet at Harvard University. Eads also com- peted in the 60 yard dash at this meet. The team, coached by Peter Gallagher, had a very successful year including a third place at the State meet in a field of seven teams, by Cathy Eads P. Dube, C. Eads, T. Manseau, K. McElroy Spring Track The 1984 outdoor track team had a very strong season. In the State Meet the team achieved a third place dominating all of the sprint events. Both the mile relay team and the 4 x 100 relay team made it to the New England Meet by plac- ing first at the State Meet. We wish Good Luck to the 9185 outdoor track team and hope that it is as successful as the previous team, by Cathy Eads Row 1: J. Romano, D. Austin, M. Baker, B. Cioffi. Row 2: B. Goodrich, L. J. girls have been known for their great tennis teams in past years and this year will be no excep- tion. Our girls practice many hours a day, 5-6 days a week, under the su- pervision of their Coach Mary Wing. Every year Mrs. Wing puts much of her free time towards her team that she has taught and guided for many years. She has always been a great asset for team and we hope she will be with us for many years to come. The team wouldn't be the same with- out her. by Kim Woods Row 1: B. Thomas, H. Vargas, L. Norton. Frey. Coach McDonough MARTYBALL at M.S.J. Though a losing season a year ago with freshman starting, such as Cerebal and Cujo. The Mounties did better than their record suggests, they always came close, to teams who played best. The Major got us psyched with his pre-game talks, and Crawler did his part as he never balked. Ariba was a pitcher, and was the best he could be, but when it came to running, he was slower than Miltie. Half-pint had guts, and played with emotion, as did the Speedster, who avoided commotion. Then there was Fly- hawk. or the Chicken Man, who did his impressions better than Mary's Little Lamb. Flyhawk, Goodie, and Moorsey have left us forever. But we will remember them as we try to do better. They played with a passion, and gave it their all, as we will do this year in MARTYBALL! by Thomas Heleba SOFTBALL The softball team had a very good season last year. They ended up with a win - lose record of 9 and 7. This record allowed them into the tournament playoffs. The first playoff game was against Vergennes, the final score was 3 -2 in favor of M.S.J. The next game was against Oxbow. The final score was 5-1, against M.S.J. Obvi- ously one sound will not be agreeable with everyone, so many different sounds were developed. With the few exceptions of people who would rather sit and meditate, everyone likes music. Some people can sit back and listen to music, some have to get up and dance around, still there are others who cannot listen to music without doing homework. Why do people listen to music? There were quite a few different responses, ranging from Why not? to It's better than listening to my mother. First off, you have your heavy metal bands, usually having loud, screaming vocalists, with a guitar to match. These bands sing about sex, drugs, and rock and roll, but usually nothing else. New Wave is sometimes political, but does not have any strict guidelines for subject matter. They just want you to dance. Finally, we have what they call Hardcore. Their songs are short outbursts of sheer energy and power. Slam- ming is a popular dance step to this type of sound. The songs usually contain political undertones but not any specific purpose. They point out all the problems in the world, but do not try to offer euphoric solutions. We wanted our Senior yearbook to be something special so that everyone would enjoy reading it and looking back on our years at M.S.J. with laughter and happiness. Our staff was very small this year. We often experienced difficulty when pictures didn't come out right ... But, our class did do a super job by going out and getting over $2000.00 worth of ads. We would like to thank Gary Bouchard for his help with photography, Mark Saks, The Jostens representative, for his advice; Mr. Dwyer and Mr. Sanborn, our moderators, for their time, consideration and cooperation. Also thanks to Missy, Lori Paolucci, Bill Kimball, Kevin Perry, Jim Crowley, and Farrell who helped with the production of the book in many ways. We lastly thank our parents for their patience with inconveniences brought about by long hours after school. Now that the yearbook is complete and the last deadline has been met, we feel very relieved. We wish you the best of luck and hope that THE MOUNT '85 will help you remember all M.S.J. was and is.
