At MSJ. we have a teacher like this — Mr. James Kelley. Mr. Kelley is more than just a teacher; he is a very special friend. It is with a great deal of love that we, the class of 1981, dedicate our yearbook to Mr. James Kelley. ? Mr ft'W pv'c mnra cphVimc c trial f ui i c ai i a efi s -r ras e rtif o RUTLAND. VERMONT 05701 To the Class of 1981 Four years ago you entered M.S.J. as young freshmen, and now suddenly you are ready for graduation. During that period of time many things have happened to you. You have grown in age and knowledge, and hopefully in wisdom. You have formed close friendships, known some hurt and chosen a course for the future. May God fill that future with love, happiness and His Grace. I would ask you to set three priorities in life to ensure your fulfillment as persons. Be faithful to God and the gospel of Jesus Christ. Be kind and loving to others. Remember that the things of real value can only be seen by the heart. May God bless you all. 6 TABLE OF CONTENTS Seniors Faculty 30 Fall Sports 39 Juniors 51 Sophomores 55 Freshmen 59 Drama 62 Superlatives 67 Winter Sports 77 Clubs 85 Spring Sports 93 Ads 106 EDITORS - MARCY MATTSSON ALOONSRI MONTGOMERY ART - LAURIE CROSSMAN BRIDGET AUSTIN PHOTOGRAPHERS - KEVIN OMLAND BRIAN ORIORDAN PHOTO DEVELOPER - JOE CARROLL ADVISORS - MRS. VenoMissim During the past 12 months, I have had the pleasure of attending Mt. St. Joseph as a Rotary Youth Exchange Student. This year offered a unique opportunity to experience the culture and lifestyle of my peers in a foreign country. It has been a wonderful time of learning, new horizons, and friendship. I would hope that Mt. St. Joseph will become more involved with the Youth Exchange Program by allowing other foreign students like myself to join them in becoming part of the MSJ community. Perhaps, in the future, the school would like to participate in a more active way by sending abroad a student from the Academy. To Father La valley, the MSJ faculty, and my fellow students: I offer my sincere thanks for your acceptance, your guidance, and most importantly, your friendship. The beautiful friends and memories I have made this year will always hold special meaning and remain with me, as will the loving spirit of Mt. St. Joseph. I wish you all much happiness and the best in all you do. With love and thanks. Stratton PARENTS AND FRIENDS CLUB For the past ten years, the Parents and Friends of MSJ have been a money- raising organization. Our major project has been a Bingo every Wednesday night. Over the past decade, we have given MSJ over $100,000.00 in operating expenses plus improvements and renovations and materials for the faculty. We feel we have equipped this school with as many facilities as any other school in the State. Some of the improvements made were the entire new look in the lobby, the double doors, light fixtures, and furniture for the classrooms. One does not have to be a parent to belong to the Parents and Friends of MSJ: be an alumnus, friend, or parent of a student-past, present, or future. We are proud to be a part of the MSJ community and realize we are different where it counts. 4«M FALL SPORTS STATE CHAMPS 1980 Row 1: M. Messier, T. Joyce, K. Buzzell, V. Motroni, E. Hagen, J. Sullivan STANDING: V. Motroni, M. Thorne, J. Battles, M. Burke, R. Liscinsky, K. Omland The 1980 Student Senate consisted of sixteen members, four from each class. Faculty advisors were Mr. McCue and Miss Sullivan. Their officers were as follows: Kevin Burke, President; John Battles, Vice-President and representative to the School Board; Kevin Omland, Treasurer; and Kathleen Hackett, Secretary. The Senate sponsored the traditional projects such as Pro- ject Help and Hand-in-Hand. Project Hand-in-Hand had usu- ally taken place at a home football game, but this year they held it at the minstrel instead. The group also sold doughnuts during the morning study halls. One of the new projects that the Senate started this year was a football pool for the Mon- day night football games. They also planned a Deer Hunter's Breakfast to raise money for their scholarship fund. In addi- tion, the Senate worked in cooperation with the class officers to get the privilege of having dances reinstated. The Student Senate was also involved in community ser- vice. Students worked on banquets for retired citizens and also had a monthly representative to the Rutland Lion's Club. Because all Senate meetings are open, many non-members attended and showed an interest in helping on projects. Many thanks to all Senate members for all of their time and cooperation; also, a special thanks to all of the non-members who helped selling doughnuts. The Senate would like to thank Debbie Bourgeois for all of her time. As time progressed, ideas were born and pages became filled with pictures and words that expressed the difficulties and joys of our years here at the Mount. We filled this book with memories that we wish to remember in the years to come. We started with an imagination, a helpful staff, advisors, and a couple of TABs. Our imagination grew, our staff grew, our advisors became very helpful and understanding, and the yearbook room became filled with empty TAB cans. We gave our study halls, after school, and a few Friday nights to compile our memories into the 1981 yearbook. We wish to express our sincere thanks to everyone who helped us. In the end, there was a yearbook that held our memories. We hope you 've enjoyed reading it as much as we’ve enjoyed composing it.
