VERMONT 05701 The yearbook is more than just another hard covered school related book. It is an ever important link to our high school years. The yearbook is a memory book, a book that will forever hold pictures and words of friendships and activities. It is a book filled with love, laugnter and the smiles of good times. We hope to capture the joy, excitement, love and happiness f our last year at tne Mount. We, the editors and staff, have worked hard in compiling this yearbook. We feel that through this experience we have many things about ourselves and one another. We have learned to compro- mise, share ideas and most importantly to work as a group. We wish all tne seniors and underclassmen much love and nappiness in their lives. We also extend a very special thanks to the teachers wno brought us this far! O'Riordan o CD MOUNT SAINT JOSEPH ACADEMY RUTLAND - VERMONT 05701 To the Class of 1980 When you first arrived at the Mount some four years ago I remember being told that you were an exceptional class. Your high school career has proven that statement to be more than true. I have asked myself on many occasions what is it that makes you special. I would like to share with you what I believe to be the answer. Your secret lies in your care and concern for one another. Your strength lies in working well together. Your beauty is found in your love for each other. Your hope for the future rests in your ability to take this quality of sharing beyond the confines of your class and M.S.J. and bring it with you to all the people and places you go in life. I write this letter with mixed emotions. There is the emotion of sadness because you are leaving the Mount, and you are special to me. It is not easy to say good-bye to people you love. But there is also the greater emotion of joy. Joy because you have been and always will be a part of us. Joy because the spirit of the Mount goes with you. Joy because you are ready and are well equipped to go into the world. Thank you for beautiful memories. Always be true to God, yourselves, and your fellow man. Be comfortable in your own skin. You leave the Mount with my gratitude, my respect, and my hope for a beautiful life. Keep in touch. With so much love, Father Lavalley THE MOUNT’S GREA TEST HITS SIDE ONE Produced by the 1980 yearbook staff Arranged by Mrs. Sandra Coyle and Mr. Joseph Flory Cover photo by Karen GiUigan Dedicated to Father Richard Lavallcy 1980 MSJ Records. Inc. MSJ Records; Convent Avc. Rutland. Vt. Printed.in U.S.A. Father. Four years ago we entered into a world of insecurity and confusion in the realization that we were beginning a phase of our lives extremely different than we had ever experienced before. Listening to the philosophy of this building that we would attend for the next four years of our lives, we didn't comprehend the saying, at First, that M.S.J. is not a building! It looked like a building! What were you trying to tell us? In retrospect, we can only turn to you to see the philosophy of love, caring, and friendship perfectly exercised in every aspect of your life. You have given us a part of you that no one can ever take away, the gifts of friendship and love. You have shared with us the fondest memories of our high school years. Comforting us in our sorrow and rejoicing in our triumphs arc just small examples of how you have given unselfishly of yourself. Well, now it’s time to move on. to chase the horizons our dreams have explored, to pursue the life we have imagined, to capture the stars once thought impossible to reach. You have given us self-confidence, pride, and most of all, you have helped us to find ourselves, to be the supreme creatures God has meant us to be. to live, to chase our dreams to pursue our imaginations, to reach the stars, to meet the goals we have set for ourselves, to be proud of our true persons, and to grow. Father La valley, you ha vc portrayed the qualities of a friend so vividly that you arc the most unforgettable person in our high school world. To you. we. the class of 1980, dedicate this yearbook, with all our love. o r e.r Los cxUe_Lj emernloer: $ Keys.' I P' ff r.ebiT wnf«f f T- c t c S .. CVo b of5 80 SEASONS The seasons are changing and so arc we; we're starting to tell our childhood goodbye. We're not the little children we used to be; in some ways we're different entirely. It's a little sad to sec children play, to think we'll never again be that way. Perhaps it's the future we fear, fear of losing something of the past that is very dear. Unlike loved ones, time we cannot hold; we pass by a mirror and realize it has made us old. It's just that the minutes, hours and days go by so fast and happy times of the present soon become the past. Yes it seems just like yesterday that we were small; then suddenly years come upon us and it docsn't seem like time at all. Trying so hard to keep up with today's memories of good times fading away. Growing up is hard to do when you want to enjoy life's moments which are few. We might always be children at heart and from that will be much harder to part. The seasons are changing and so arc we and we must tell our childhood goodbye_ — KISS TODAY GOODBYE Class Officers: Matt Hebert, secretary; Kathy O'Connor, treasurer; Tom Levins, vice-president: Paul Burns, president to O 03 JUDITH M. W.D.C. 4 THE NIGHT BEFORE GRADUATION Twas the night before graduation and all through the school not a senior was stirring not even the class fool. With a middle age man who ncr'd did da I Icy I knew in a flash it was Father La Valley He was dressed all in black from his head to his foot and his clothes were all covered with dog hair and soot The diplomas were sitting in the office with care in hopes Bishop Marshall soon would be there. The seniors were nestled all snug in their beds while visions of partying danced in their beads More rapid then mounties his courses they came and he laughed and shouted and called them by name To the top of quatcrlinc to Berger King wall now dash away dash away dash away all The bundle of diplomas he had hung on his back and he looked like a peddler just opening his pack A wink of his eye and a twist of his head soon gave me to know I haa nothing to dread When all of a sudden there rose such a clatter I sprang from my bed to see what was the matter So up to the college tops the courses they flew with a car full of seniors and Father LaValley too He spoke not a word but went straight to his work and filled all the blanks then turned with a jerk When what to my sleepy eyes should appear but many rowdic seniors and a keg of b_______ And then in a twinkling I heard in the hall the laughing and crying of each little call He sprang to his Mercedes to his senior gave a whistle and away they all went like a nuclear misslc TP JUST THE WA Y YOU ARE The value of a person cannot be scribbled into a few lines of poetry. The value of a friend is determined by the lasting impression that she imparts upon the vast sands of your soul. Once in a given moment, a special kind of friend comes along who enhances your very being with her own satisfaction with life, and your whole life is made richer with the opportunity to love her. uch a friend was that of Joan, whose simple smile beheld all the joy of the world, whose silent tears were those of courage, whose heart-felt laughter was that of hope. Her thoughts and words compelled us all to discover the true meaning of friendship, and her life in itself was one that will remain forever in our hearts, for the value of a true friend is the priceless discovery of someone who teaches us how to be a friend in return .... HACKETT The M.S.J. student Semite consists of four representatives from each class. There is a president who is elected by the school. The vice-president is elected by the senate who is a member of the school board. The secretary and treasurer are also elected by the senate. the main function of the student senate is to serve both the community and school. Some traditional community projects in- clude Project Help, project hand-in-hand, and a dinner for the Senior Citizens, all of which were a great success this year. This year the senate is try ing to do more for the community by planning a pancake breakfast and a big brother-big sister program for the mentally retarded teenagers of our community. The big brother-big sister program will be another way in which the M.S.J. student body will be reaching out to aid those less fortunate than we arc. Through our various fund raising efforts the student senate has been able to provide a scholarship to a graduating senior. This past year the student senate requested and received the smoking area for students. Another endeavor we undertook that was very successful was selling doughnuts during study halls. Last year, the senate started the annual spring carnival. Thanks to you. the student body, it was an overwhelming success! This year the senate will again be the sponsor of the spring “fling . The student senate wishes to express its sincere appreciation to Mrs. Wolk. our faculty advisor, for all the time and effort she has given to make each and every one of our endeavors successful. Her never ending enthusiasm inspired not only us. the student senate, but the entire M.S.J. community. We also wish to thank you. the student body, who gave us so much co-operation and support. It was a project that went over well with the student body and the faculty and is sure to become a tradition for the M.S.J. Senate. It was a day full of fun competition; events in- cluded: Basketball throw, wheelbarrow races, egg toss, trivia, three legged races, obstacle course, make me laugh, pie eat- ing contest and long distant running. 1'he day ended with a game of baseball between the seniors and faculty. In the end the class of '81 were the winners in points, yet truly everyone who partici- pated was a winner that day. HAND-IN-HAND DOUGHNUTS PROJECT HELP Mount Saint Joieph Academy ReprMantatnra Fof PROJECT HELP 1979 __ZJlsLly . Z_____ It was culled the most organized Project Help M S .I. has ever seen. The student senate worked many hours preparing and planning for that day. On December 21, 1979 the student body can- vased the Rutland city collecting ample food and money to provide for all the families who re- quested assistance. Approximately 400 Christ- mas food baskets were carefully and caringly filled and delivered. Each of the classes rose to the occasion helping the less fortunate during the Christmas season. Despite a valiant effort by the upperclassmen the Seniors, in making that extra effort, collected the greatest amount of food that day. The entire school united and worked as a unit. There was a definite sense of love among all the students. Project Help is certainly one of the best days in the M.S.J. calendar. Doughnut selling was one of the new and pop- ular porjccts sponsored by the student senate this year. The doughnuts, from Jones' bakery, went over well with the hungry students and teachers and provided money which the student senate will use to award a scholarship to a departing senior. The senate hopes to bring the jelly-filled NA TIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Kneeling: .1. Cameron. M. Hebert. T. I.evins, J. Battles. B. Sabataso. Standing: L. Daley. T. Lawler. J. Austin. S. Cragin, AI.
