1968 MOUNT Mount Saint Joseph Academy Rutland, Vermont Volume XXIX Daniel Carrillo — Susan Rotella MANAGER — Cheryl Mazzariello — Michael Carroll — Robert Densmore 2 3 I am-different Because all the words That have happened to me Since the day I was born Have been added together And the sum is ME. Dedication i I i Reverend Francis E. McDonough Father McDonough, you have been a true friend to us. You have overlooked our carelessness, our forgetful- ness, and our inconsideration. You have made us look within ourselves and laugh; you have pushed us farther along the road to Christian maturity. Your calm resolu- tion and your perspective of life have taken away our anger and substituted understanding. How can we say thank you to a man who has done all this? We could have offered you a gift, presented you with money, but that is too meaningless for you. Instead, we chose to work many long hours to produce this yearbook for you. The 1968 Mount is only the tangible embodiment of the intangible — our admiration. Therefore, we dedicate our yearbook, which is so all-important in our senior year, to you, our Father Mac. THE MOST REVEREND ROBERT F. JOYCE, Bishop of Burlington, School Board and Superintendent Shape The Very Reverend Monsignor John A. Lynch, Diocesan Superintendent of Schools. School Policies. SCHOOL BOARD. Left to right: Monsignor John Kennedy, James Coughlin; Guido Rotella, President; Sister Mary Christine. Father Omer Dufoult; Mother Scholastica: Father Thomas Connor: Francis Nolan. Absent from nirtnre William FoIav ; Principal TO THE CLASS OF '68: ‘ Committment!'' Involvement!' Dedication! — Bywords of the now generation. These ambitions are a credit to you, and we at MSJ hope that the Christian attitudes, education, and motivation provided at the Academy have helped to ignite these aspirations which have so much poten- tial for influencing your own lives and the world around you. Be committed, be involved, be dedicated! With God's blessing reach for a star. Our greatest sat- isfaction will be your determination to attain it, with- out counting the cost, measuring the distance, or seeking reward. Sincerely, Father O'Connell FATHER RAYMOND LAMBERT - Guidance Counselor and Assistant Principal Guidance Department The MSJ Guidance Department attempts to aid students in making personal, voca- tional, and educational choices. It is this de- partment s utmost belief that a decision should be made entirely by the student with the Guidance Department serving only as a stepping-stone. With this thought in mind, MSJ has two full -time guidance counselors — Father Lambert and Father Kane. Both of these men live at MSJ and are well known by all for their concern and interest for each stu- dent. SISTER JAMES BERNARD Math Department To be able to think in logical patterns and to make a verita- ble deduction are important steps in a student s education. The Math Department challenges the pupil to give his best in study methods and to achieve a proper understanding of mathematical procedures. SISTER AGNES MARIE MR EDMUND BOYCE SISTER MIRIAM TERESA Science Department The inquiring mind is of extreme importance, and no department of the school realizes this more than the Science Department. The inquiring mind is en- couraged and aided in its growth and development by the laboratory facilities, challenging courses, and competent teachers. SISTER STEPHEN MARIE — Earth Science, 8iology SISTER MARY MARGARET - Chemistry SISTER JOHN PAUL - Chemistry SISTER KATHLEEN - Biology SISTER HELENA - Biology, Physical Science English Department Perhaps of all the creations of man, lan- guage is the most astonishing. The English De- partment aims at cultivating this creation within each student, so that he may better communi- cate with and understand the world in which he lives. The MSJ English teachers believe that com- munication is a two-way process; they teach the receiving of ideas through listening and reading and the sending of ideas through speaking and writing. SISTER MARY MARTIN 12 SISTER CARL JOSEPH SISTER CLEMENTINE 13 SISTER CHRISTOPHER MR. WAITER MOORE Language Department Much of our difficulty with people in other countries stems from the fact that so little is known about cross- cultural communication. Because of this lack, much of the good will and great effort of this nation has been wasted in its overseas programs. Through courses in French, Spanish, and Latin, MSJ students take the first step towards peace — an under- standing of other cultures. SISTER MADONNA THERESE - French SISTER JANE FRANCES - Latin MR JAMES KELLEY - French SISTER FRANCIS DE SALES - Span.sh ' SISTER PAUL JOSEPH Business Department Vocational training for the business field is offered in the Commercial De- partment curriculum. Besides supplying unlimited opportunity for the student planning to pursue a career in business, commercial courses offer specialized subjects, such as typing and shorthand, which aid in improving study habits. SISTER AGNES MILDRED SISTER CORNELIUS SISTER CHRISTINE 15 MR WILLIAM EATON SISTER SAINT CATHERINE Religion Department Our religion faculty has shown that reli- gion is not merely an abundance of laws and commandments to be learned and obeyed, but rather that it is a combination of all the aesthetical as well as concrete as- pects of life. This year has brought change to the reli- gion department. The offering of nev courses and the alteration of the marki system from numerical grades to satisfac ry or unsatisfactory have produced an mosphere conducive to the learning . modern religion. History Department An understanding of the past provides us with the key to the future. With this thought in mind, the History Depart- ment sets its goal. Communism, Sociology, Ec- onomics, Government, and Contemporary Problems, as ell as the histories, provide •ne student with the material | essential to understanding government and people. BOTTOM ROW: Cynthia Wierzbicki, Linda Fredette, Kathy Champine. SECOND ROW. Cheryl Mazzariello, Margaret Riter. Each summer the American Legion sponsors Boys and Girls State where students from Vermont learn the prin- ciples of government. The program lasts for a week with boys at Norwich University in Northfield and girls at Ver- mont College in Montpelier. Each group forms its government beginning on the “town level and pro- ceeding to the “state' level by staging elections and holding campaigns. In addition to governmental activi- ties and intertown athletics, a final Girls State — Boys State dance is held. Jack Candon of MSJ was chosen os one of Vermont's two delegates to Boys Nation held at the University of Maryland and Washington D.C. later in the summer. The Mount Saint Joseph delegation was further hon- ored by the election of Danny Foley as lieutenant gover- nor, the nomination of John Burke to the Town Hall of Fame, and the owarding of a Middlebury College schol- arship to Dan Carrillo.
