editor — martha battles assistant editor — helen carpenter business manager — david haynes mount saint joseph academy rutland, Vermont volume 27 little things Little words are the sweetest to hear; little charities fly farthest, and stay longest on the wing; little lakes are the stillest; little hearts are the fullest, and little farms are the best tilled. Little books are read the most,, and little songs, the dearest loved. And when Nature would make anything especially rare and beautiful, she makes it little; little pearls, little diamonds, little dews. Igar's is a model prayer; but then it is a little one. The Sermon on the Mount is little but the last discourse was an hour long. Life is made up of littles; death is what remains of them all. Day is made up of little beams, and night is glorious with littl? stars. dedication It is the general feeling of the Class of 1966 that our yearbook should lx dedicated to the person who has influenced us most beneficially during our impressionable high school years. This person has masterfully blended a chal- lenging new outlook on all he teaches with the personal appeal of his wit and good humor. The result is classes which are scintillating, rewarding, and unfor- gettable. We have all been most impressed by this teacher’s qualities of fairness, frankness, and openmindedness. Through his deep concern for the individuality of his students and his sin- cere respect for all their opinions, a close relationship between him and his stu- dents has been established. His solid Christian character has been evident in the content and manner of his teaching and has been a fine example that will remain with us for the rest of our lives. We therefore, with great pleasure, dedicate this year’s Mount to Mr. James Coughlin. table of contents imstration arid faculty 9 ¥ kV The small stones which fill up the crevices Have almost as much to do with making the firm wall As the great rock; So do the small moments _ toe have spent with them FilNhe crevices •, • of out foundation HIS EXCELLENCY THE MOST REVEREND ROBERT F. SCHOLASTICA MR GUIDO L ROTELLA We, the students of M.S.J., jvould like to recognize Reverend Poirier for his contributions to the Academy as well as to his parish. Ordained into the priesthood June 14, 1930, Father Poirier served as assistant at St. Joseph's in Burlington and at Notre Dame des Victoires Parish in St. Johnsbury. In 1936 Father Poirier was appointed pastor of St. Amadeus Parish in Alburg where he remained until 1962. That year Father Poirier was appointed pastor of Immaculate 1 kart of Mary Parish in Rut- land. Here in Rutland Father Poirier was a member of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus, the National Conference of Christians and Jews, and he served for three years on the M.S.J. School Board. nrwrnrMn I CO i: DniRIIIR Dear Graduates: Your yearbook is a journey into the past; not the remote past, but those four wonderful years which arc be ini; climaxed this week with your graduation from M.S.J. As such it will be perused often and treasured for years. With graduation from high school many of the activities and interests of the past years will be left behind. You will be entering new worlds, you will be making new friends, you will find new interests, new challenges. The very nature of high school makes all of this necessary; your stay here was never intended to be permanent. Rather we were expected to help you through your formative years, to help you build the foundations upon which your future- must now arise. What that superstructure will be will depend upon many factors but mainly it will depend upon you. For four years, then, we have had a part in your intellectual and spiritual growth. We have tried to present the wisdom of the ages, to give you a taste of culture, to lead you along the paths of right reasoning, correct thinking and clear expression. And all of this we have tried to do within the framework of Christian truth and discipline. Hopefully you arc now equipped to form healthy attitudes, to make prudent decisions, to become truly Christian per- sonalities, to create happy and useful lives. As you begin your venture into the future our prayer for you is that God will bestow His choicest blessings upon all that you do and that, in return, from your hearts there will arise a profound exemplary love to light and warm the world around you. Father Searlcs TO THE CLASS OF 1966: Never before lias so great a challenge awaited you as you go forth to take your place in the world. You are being challenged to make your mark on society and to enrich your own lives in the process. And never before have the opportunities been so numerous to meet this challenge. Daily advances in science, new exploration of the arts, and an ever increasing effort to bring these findings to the threshold of those determined educate themselves formally or informally—all exemplify the opportunities Siting for those who would seek them. They reveal a vast arena where challenge meets opportunity and where opportunity gives birth to further challenge. Each of you has something distinctive to offer to the world. Character and temperament, personality and intelligence, talent and determination— these are all yours to use for good as you meet the challenge through the opportunities you arc willing to explore. ch; The Catholic education you have received should enable you to recognize truly Christian values where they are present, and to provide them where they arc absent, so that you may illumine the world with the light of Christ. May this Light grow brighter in your own lives, and may you be the instru- ment for its illumination in the lives of others until the day when Divine Love shall make this Light shine pecfectly through union with Him forever. They started the season as league champions; to us Mounties they are still champions. They will never be remembered for a spectacular season, but their spirit and the spirit of the Mounties behind them will never be forgotten. It takes a great team to go undefeated; it takes an even greater team to lose and still keep their fighting spirit. Sister John Paul and Sister Miriam Teresa for putting up with our disorganized ways and helping us meet those hectic deadlines. Father Scarles for giving us the almost exclusive use of your car. We will always remember your reply when we asked for it— Well, I suppose so! Mr. Norm Porter for your fine cooperation and excellent photography. We sincerely appreciate your promptness in developing our pictures, especially those last-minute division Mr. Robert Frazier for your much-needed advice and your assistance with our photographic needs. Q from the editors We would like to thank all those who have made the 1966 MOUNT pos- sible. The production of a yearbook is a group effort. This year's staff has proven themselves to possess such a spirit. Always willing to help, they have sometimes spent hours in the chemistry lab. struggling to improve lay-outs and to rewrite copy. Our typists were always available and willing to help us in tight situations. If a mistake was made, they patiently erased on all three sheets of our triplicates. We recall the efforts of David Haynes and Mary Ann Keefe, our Business Manager and Assistant Manager, respectively, and their staff members in secur- ing advertisements to finance our yearbook. Our moderators. Sister Miriam Teresa and Sister John Paul, patiently guided and directed our efforts through those hectic months of yearbook work, espe- cially those last minute deadline rushes. Father Scarles was always ready to assist us in any way possible, especially by the use of his Fearless Falcon'. We are particularly grateful to Mr. Norm Porter, our official photographer, whose excellent pictures made these pages possible and to Mr. Robert Frazier of Lindholm's Sports Center whose advice and assistance aided us considerably. We also wish to thank our student photographers. Joseph Pawlusiak and John Davidson, for their fine snapshots of everyday school activities. They were always cooperative, even at the most inconvenient times. In September we eagerly began our yearbook. Despite the difficulties, we enjoyed many amusing incidents. In compiling our yearbook, we have tried to recapture for you and for ourselves not only the big events but also the little things which make us happy to have been a part of MSJ. In the years to come we, as editors, will look back on the '66 MOUNT and remember the time spent composing it as the most rewarding experience of our high school career.
