THE MOUNT of 1964 Mount Saint Joseph Academy Rutland, Vermont Editor—Cheryl Caliguiri Assistant Editor—Patricia Hogan Business Manager—Joseph Marotti Assistant Business Manager—Geraldine Emrick Property Of Rutland Table of Contents Foreword. Faculty Seniors Classes Sports Activities 15 41 49 63 Advertisements 91 On January 18, 1955, St. Amadeus parish, Alburg, Vermont, was proud to claim its first native priest. His name was Wendell H. Searles. Years before, while traveling the parish rounds with his pastor. Father Searles learned of human nature —and French. As valedictorian of his class and an active member of the C.Y.O., he learned organization. While leaping for rebound, or lying exhausted, panting, on the cool floor of Alburg High’s locker room at half-time, he discovered the value of team spirit and co-operation. During his summers as a counselor at Holy Cross, he developed understanding of youth and discovered a hidden talent for working with them. Since he has come to the Mount, this true Yankee of Vermont has given of himself to the school. He is characterized by his love for Mt. St. Joseph, and we, the Senior Class, wish to acknowledge this. We feel that Father Searles is a symbol of everything the Mount stands for; in the four years of our schooling here, he has shown us what true values are, and, by his example, how to attain them. For these reasons, we are proud to dedicate the 1964 Mount to Father Wendell H. Searles, our devoted and re- spected principal. BISHOP ROBERT F. JOYCE Bishop of Burlington MONSIGNOR JOHN A. LYNCH Superintendent of Schools MONSIGNOR KENNEDY Christ the King Parish To the Class of 1964: It is a real pleasure for me to extend congratulations and best wishes to another graduating class. There will always be special memories of the class of 1964 because I feel very much a part of your class. Vc started at M.S.J. together in I960—together we were green and bewildered. Now our eyes are on the future. Our concern for your spiritual and scholastic develop- ment over the past four years has been sincere, genuine, and prayerful. Now as you join the ranks of Academy Alumni we hope and we pray that always and in all things you will think, judge, and act according to the mind of Christ. Sincerely, Father Searles MT. ST. JAMES DAVIDSON My first year at Mount Saint Joseph has been an enjoyable and fruitful experience. I have been deeply impressed with the dedication of the faculty and the responsibility shown by the students to their Christian vocation of student. This spirit has created the atmosphere of Christian living which I found so active and sincere in the life of the school. You Seniors have contributed a very important part to this spirit. May this same attitude and spirit go with you as you leave the Mount to pursue your respective goals. May a vital and mature Christian Commitment be the goal which will permeate ever)' action and decision in your adult life. The Josephitc Chapter of the National Honor Society had a busy and productive year, beginning in September with the election of officers and a discussion of the coming year’s work. In November five members were inducted in a private ceremony at the monthly meeting. Later that month, the N.H.S. offered its services to the Sisters for the Pre-Christmas Festival. December was a busy month for the club with the wrapping of Share” gifts and the annual Alumni Supper for its former members. The preparation and presentation of the February Induction was the next activity. The group al so worked as hosts for the visiting schools during the State One-Act play contest. The year ended with the annual Academy Awards Night” on May 29- New N.H.S. members inducted in February were: Annctta Walsh, Elwyn Laydcn, Patricia Pockcttc, Estcrinia Valleroli. Ralph Musclla. Last Fall, the F.T.A. got off to a good start by inducting several students into the club. This was immediately followed by the selling of victory jackets to the student body. On Nov. 11, thanks to the F.T.A., the M.S.J. side of the field was a blur of green and white. In connection with American Education Week, members put a display on the main bulletin board and the annual Faculty Tea was held. Many club members attended the State convention held, this year, at Woodstock. In the true spirit of Christmas, the F.T.A. held a Christmas party for some of the area children. During the school year, the club sponsored many activities. Perhaps the most popular was the movie, War and Peace,” which was enjoyed by teachers and students alike. Many girls either helped teachers or tutored one of their classmates. At meetings throughout the year, various guest speakers discussed different aspects of the teaching profession. In June, scholarships were awarded to deserving seniors from the money raised by the year’s projects. First row: A. Pellegrino, D. Hebert. C. Mick, M. Dupre, S. Abatiell, M. DiCcsarc, A. Three members prepared speeches for the American Legion Oratorical contest, which was won by David Ponto. Dur- ing the winter months, the students took part in several meets with near by high-schools and represented Mt. St. Joseph at the U.V.M. Speech Festival in April. The final forensic event of the year was the Intramural Contest in May. r. St. Christopher and Sr. Mary Patrick, Public Speaking lodcrators, try various ways of reading a selection. Retreat Daily Mass was one of the important events of the retreat. A group of seniors stop at Father Conlin's room for gui- dance. During the Retreat Father Edward P. Conlin gave the stu- dent body many things to think about. He recalled to our minds the fact that it was our sins, not the Jews, who crucified our Lord. Seniors, especially, heeded Father’s words concerning the ways in which to better their lives since they will be going out sooner than the underclassmen to face more serious tempta- tions. Even if vou look foolish, always do the right thing.' Father Searles and Father Conlin gauge the success of the The Most Flattering Senior Pictures in the Yearbook OPPOSITE PAGE 1. J. Spencer, 2. M. LETTER from the EDITORS We'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has co-operated with us in the production of the 1964 MOUNT. Any success which this yearbook enjoys is due to people like Father Scarles, who so willingly lent us his car, and Mr. Norm Porter, without whose help we could not have completed it. Our faculty advisors, Sister Miriam Teresa and Sister John Paul, guided us with concern and patience. We'd also like to extend our gratitude to another faculty member Mr. Walter Moore for the many times he patiently endured the seemingly endless chatter from across the hall. Thoughtfully, we recall the efforts of the Business and Editorial Boards and those of the wonderful and hard- working members of our Senior Class. The time and energy spent by Maryann Belfore and Jack Burke getting ads together at the last minute, will never be forgotten. With ever)- yearbook comes a substantial amount of typing. Many members of the Business Board, along with Sister John Joseph, were kind enough to give up their time to type. Most of all, we recall the last few days of the yearbook’s production when Gracemary Keith, without complaint, stayed for hours to type the necessary pages. Terri Fish, John Spencer, and Peggy Doucette were always willing to work when their assistance was needed. Our Art and Copy departments put up with our many corrections and we are grateful. The yearbook pages would be blank were it not for the pictures taken by our amateur photographers—Mark Trcanor and Jimmy Pitanicllo. Gayle Howard, Mickey Macfarlane, and Frank Short worked hard at compiling the sport’s section of the yearbook. Last but not least, we could never thank enough the moderators and members of various organizations, and the homeroom teachers and underclassmen. When they were forced to lose class time in order that pictures might be taken, they conducted themselves with the utmost quiet and co-operation. Please accept this grateful acknowledgement of your kind and thoughtful generosity. May Our Lord reward you with his choicest blessings.
