The religious spirit is evident in every daily activity carried on at the Mount. Classes and outside activities arc continually offered in prayer. The spirit of education can be seen through the number of students eligible for the Honor Roll. Academy students are also recipients of many honors and awards. The spirit of sportsmanship can be witnessed at any sports event occurring at the Mount. The team and student body exhibit such spirit and determination that they have been complimented by many throughout the state of Vermont. Therefore, with pride and enthusiasm, the Class of 1963 dedicates the Mount to the undaunted Spirit of M.S.J.” BISHOP ROBERT F. JOYCE Bishop of Burlington MONSIGNOR JOHN A. You have achieved an important goal and we rejoice with you. Today we hope and we pray that you will always live according to the ideals presented to you during these past four years. To think, judge and act according to the mind of Christ’’ is perhaps a good summation of those ideals. Your high school education has come from many people who have dedicated their lives to the work of Christian Education. Let their generosity always be- an example to you as you strive to lx of service to God and your fellow men. (7ICusic Joos ers LEFT TO RIGHT: Joseph Bavis. Head Coach: Fundsic” Cioffi Asst. Coach: Tony Zingali The Green Wave of Mt. St. Joseph Academy made history this season hy capping the state title and gain- int; permanent possession of the rotating city championship trophy. It was the first time in thirteen years that M.S.J. has won a state- title. It was also the first time that they have won permanent posses- sion of the city-series trophy. The success of the team this year was not the work of one or two star players but the combined efforts of eleven men working as one. The success was also due to the fine coaching of Mr. Alfonso Cioffi and Mr. Anthony Zingali. We are extremely proud of our team this year and we would like to wish future M.S.J. teams the same success. The Sisters’ prayers plus the team’s fight equal victory. STANDING: John Anderson. The Mounties played excellent ball all season and the games that were lost were all close ones. The boys fought hard all the way to the tournament and almost won their semi-final tilt. They should be further congratulated for their superb ball handling and sportsmanship which they displayed throughout the season. Carol Bro a. nef MOUNT SAINT JOSEPH BAND Under the expert direction and guidance of Mr. Napoleon Ianni and Sister M. Emmanuel the Mount St. Joseph Band has been able to participate in many activities during the current year. The band's snappy music boosted the school spirit at our home football games this season. It was on hand for the Veterans' Day Parade, the Christmas parade and to assist the Knights of Columbus in the induction of new members. On December 16, the band participated in a joint concert with the Glee Chorus. Another exciting event to take place in May has developed for the musicians. They have been invited to participate in the 'Ianni Festival,” to be held this year at Otter Valley Union High School. The Vermont Festival Parade in Burlington. Tri-State at Tangle-wood, in Lenox, Massa- chusetts, an exchange concert with Otter Valley Union High School Band and Woodstock Alumni Day arc also on our agenda. Several speakers were kind enough to address our club. Among them was Mr. Gallo, who discussed the sun and its chemical make-up. Dr. Barrett of Dartmouth talked to the club on viruses and the importance of biology today. On January 19, the Science Club sponsored a dance, Frosty Frolic,” which was enjoyed by all. Our Science Night, Progress in Science was a great success and presented many aspects of science at M.S.J. to the public. The officers of the Science Club discuss the prospects of a career in Science with Professor Barrett of Dartmouth College. 65 FIRST ROW': A Praticc. M. Beane. M. Clarino, S. Chioffi, C. Caliguire. J. The Mount St. Joseph I NC. which received its national charter in 1962. attempts to do this by discussions, guest lectures, films, and field trips. This year, the club, under the leadership of Eileen Burke and Barbara Notte. engaged in various activities. In November, the members served a spaghetti supper for the benefit of the Sisters’ Bazaar. The girls also raised funds for the scholarships and prizes which will be presented on Awards Night. Interested members enrolled in a First Aid course taught by Sister Jean. O.S.J., R.N. Last fall the first project of the Saint Thomas Aquinas F.T.A. was a bus trip to Boston. Junior and Senior members visited three colleges: Regis, Emmanuel, and Cardinal Cushing. The next activity was a car wash held on October 27, at MickcTs Mobil Station to raise money to pay for the previous bus trip. For the annual M.S.J.- R.H.S football game, club members sold green and white shakers and on November 13, an assembly was presented commemorating American Education Week. A display was put up on the main bulletin board in recognition of this nationwide event. An- other activity in connection with American Education Week was the annual Faculty Tea. The State Convention was held at Brattlcboro where Sally Wall was elected State Treasurer and Mary Jean Hinchey was announced outstanding senior member of the Club. Also during November, F.T.A. members made fudge for the Sisters' Bazaar. At Christmas a party with games, refreshments, and presents was given for the area's needy children. During the school year, the F.T.A. sponsored many other events, such as, a raffle, dances, School Queen, and Grinder Day, while at the monthly meetings, guest speakers addressed the club members concerning various phases of teaching. Many girls cither helped teachers or tutored one of their classmates and the seniors did some practice teaching during February. a In June, scholarships were awarded to deserving seniors from the money raised by the year's projects, and it is hoped that F.T.A. helped its members come to know a little more about the challenge of the teaching profession. The year began with the election of officers and a discussion of the coming year's work. In November, five new members were initiated in a private ceremony at the monthly meeting. The members then rendered their services to the Sisters of St. Joseph for their Pre-Christmas Festival. That was followed by the annual Share drive and assembly. December was a busy month for the club with the wrapping of Share gifts and the annual Alumni Supper for its former members. The preparation and presentation of the February Induction was the next activity. The group also offered its services for the Faculty-Varsity basketball game. Members worked as ticket sellers and ushers. On March 6, there was a joint meeting of our chapter of the National Honor Society with the group from Rutland High School. The year ended with the annual Academy Awards Night on May 29. Sister John Joseph gives some advice to the WHS. officers. Dolores Connors, secretary f.mn-«-n Uimn FIRST ROW: O. Pillon. '. Polzcllo. The constitution has been written and submitted to the national office. The degree program is now under way. It is possible for members to attain the degree of Assistant, Leader, or Supervisor through their efforts in the Club. The chief project during the 1962-1963 school year was “Operation Eton. This was a full year’s work and involved obtaining information from the agricultural, industrial, and recreational fields in order to determine the contributions from each to the economy of Vermont. Operation Ikon,” has given each member of the F.B.L.A. who was active in the project a personal background in economic understanding so that he will know better how to select a vocation, spend his income, invest his savings and understand economic problems on the local and state levels. It has helped our chapter achieve a successful year of programming, fulfilling the twelve purposes of F.B.L.A. We hope an aware- ness of the importance and value of economics has been created throughout our school and community. Under the guidance of Sister Miriam Teresa and Sister John Paul, we have tried our best to recapture the joys and sorrows of Retreats, assemblies, games, tournaments, pep rallies, plays, dances, anil the daily events of our school life. If. in the years to come, these pages bring back to you memories of the happy days we spent at Mount Saint Joseph, then our goal will have been attained. May you enjoy reading it as much as we have enjoyed compiling it.
