PRINCIPAL’S MESSAGE I am writing this message for the 1963-64 VARSHICOM just after the beginning of the New Year of 1964 in a hotel room in the city of Lethbridge. A few hours ago I met a parent of two former students of Mount Royal College from whom I enquired concerning his children. In the ensuing conversation he told me that his children began to develop a feeling of purpose and of perspective. This, of course, is the true purpose of education and a philosophy that, we hope, pervades all the activities of Mount Royal, be they in the classroom or in our various social and cultural activities. As I look back on the fall semester in 1963, the incident that inevitably comes to mind is the assassination of John F. Kennedy, President of the United States, and the effect that this DR. W.J. COLLETT C.D., B. Ed., M. A., B. D., D. D. tragedy had upon our students. Students and teachers together were able to think of the far reaching meaning of this world-shaking incident and ask what it meant. We were able to see that to dwell upon tragedy itself would be futile, but to realize that the pool of world leadership was shallow and was a great challenge. Preparation for the task of leadership of a world wherein there are so many huge problems became then the job of each one of us. Hence this tragic event helped us all to gain perspective and purpose. Throughout this term it has been an inspiration to see how our students have oc¬ cupied themselves with the job of leadership in student government and student or¬ ganizations. It has been encouraging to witness the fact that students have accepted the responsibility of disciplining themselves rather than having discipline imposed upon them by adults who hold the reins of administration. I am thoroughly convinced that we would have to look far afield to find a body of students that has so seriously accepted the challenge of responsible leadership as have our students this year. Our future in Mount Royal College must be bright because we are sending out into the world of education and commerce young men and women who are destined to give leadership to this generation, leadership that will help our world to solve its problems despite tragedies such as we experienced last November.

DEDICATION REV. JACK L. PATERSON It is with a great deal of pleasure that we, the students of Mount Royal College, dedicate Varshicom ' 64 to Jolly Jack, Mr. Jack L. Paterson, Chaplain. Mr. Paterson was born and educated in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He completed High School while living on an Indian reserve north of Winnipeg. After one year of normal school he taught grades one to ten in a one room school for two years. He became a navigator in the RCAF and was shot down over Holland. He was given up for dead, but the Dutch people found him, housed and fed him and returned him to the English lines. On returning to Canada he decided to become a minister of the United Church. After six years of university training he was ordained. Rev. Paterson spent seven years at St. Andrews River Heights Church, Winnipeg. He was fortunate enough to be able to do two years post graduate work at Mew College, Edinburgh, Scotland. Rev. Paterson went to Medicine Hat where he was minister at Fifth Avenue United Church for four years. For the past three years he has been Chaplain for MRC, UAC, Tech, as well as instructor in Religious Education at Mount Royal College. We dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Paterson in appreciation of the contribution he has made to Mount Royal College. We look forward to his help and guidance in the future.
