From the administration, let us go to the student activities As an example, willing and endeaxoring majorettes are a great help to the band which is one ol' the best in the county To promote leadership, and to stimulate association among students, various clubs hax e been organized However, the school curriculum would not be coni- plete without the athletic department Football, which is the major interest, basketball, and baseball are representatile of the sports played at Hurst These sports bring the adxantages of wholesome rivalry to the athlete and spectator, The competitor not only dexelops physical strength but also culti- xates the xirtues of sportsmanship, tolerance, co- operation, sincerity, and faithfulness You can see how the administration, the activities, and the athletics must work together to form your ideal school life MR. GREINER No longer through the hall he sweeps To chat and smile and pause, But rather now a foe he seeks-V He fights for freedoms' cause! The night is gathering all around The devil stalks with all his hideous spawn, Go forth to battle, friend' and sound The cry of freedom-and bring the Dawn! By J. P. ION When one thinks of a school, one immediately pictures a teacher in the presence of students. These boys and girls may be busy in some academic study or developing skills on a typewriter or machine in the shop. At any rate, the word, school , to most people suggests the teacher-pupil relationship. We can't imagine a school without a teacher anymore than a school without pupils. Let us pause to pay tribute to our faculty. We are especially proud of our administrators at Hurst. Mr. Rumbaugh, our superintendent, gives us the best of almost thirty years of experience in school work, By foreseeing many of our difhculties, he has helped us to meet and overcome them. Dr. Mullin, our principal, comes in closer contact with the student body. Students feel free to discuss with him questions regarding their present or future edu- cational problems. The students' desires and am- bitions are his greatest concern. Our twenty-live faculty members, ten of whom possess Master's degrees, represent a high type of individuals, whose greatest interest is the welfare of each student. Not only in the class room, but on the football field, on the stage, and in the shop extra hours are gladly given that we as students might benefit. As Alexander of Macedon has said, I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well. . . fr 4- ff. . -- --s,-' '1 , 4 --'---f- W--' '. J! 5I4? ATHLET The athletic program of Hurst High School is centered around the sports that the students appreciate the most At the present time, the major sports are football, basketball, and baseball. The Student Council in cooperation with the basketball squad sponsors an intramural basketball tournament which is gaining in popularity each year. Participation in the various sports enables the student to learn and to put into practice the rules of sportsmanship and team play, which are so greatly needed when he enters the bigger game of life. These rules teach him to co- ordinate his body and mind into a single unit with one aim in mind, victory. With these thoughts in mind, the morale of the team remains high at all times. To lose a game while using foul tactics preys harder on the mind of the athlete than to lose while playing ac- cording to the rules. That is how Hurst's athletic policy is kept at a high standard. May this high standard never be lost! uid:-.g:4!?-5:5513 6, 31 .Q .,3.':gi,7' ,sg4l,,f .?i,- fp-5 .Y 1 I' n,. - .- 9 1 -W.: J- Q... , . .ati ' I ,, .ni -2- ,. -b,d'-, iffy + sf3'f- ' ' ' 3 Y , , 1 ff ' , gi5ff ? First, we see the Colophon Staff taking special pride in writing and assembling the book. Every three weeks, a familiar sign is seen on all blackboards announc- ing the sale of the Hurstonian. These are our publications. Included in our activities are the various clubs. Noted for their active seasons is the Library Club. All poetry lovers shouldn't hesitate to join the Poetry Appreciation Club. Members of the French Club Uparlent en fran- cais while the Tap Club members are taught to dance. Those handsome boys handing out programs and acting as ushers belong to the Ushers Club. Who plants the trees and takes care of our campus? It is the Future Farmers of America. Any student interested in public speaking or in improving his speaking voice joins the Debating Team or the National Forensic League. Next come the organizations. Rules that govern our life at school are drawn up by the Student Council. A subsidiary of the Student Council is the Hall Guards, the controllers of traffic. One of the most honorable of our organi- zations is the National Honor Society. Our music-makers are the band and chorus, which also produced the Min- strel. Actors and actresses of our school are well represented in the junior and the senior class plays. You can see now what an important part the activities play in our school 1 e.
