The Gift Outright Robert Frost Anniversaries have a habit of conjuring up memories of the past, this being the year of America's Bicentennial, we reviewed Mount Pleasant's role in the nation's history during this two hundred year period. Although only a recent newcomer to the American scene, the Mount Pleasant School District has played a vital role in the development of the nation's youth, and because of its high position in all phases of education, many reminiscences, looking back through the years, come to light. 1855 - The original schoolhouse was built on the Cartwell Estate, an area that was mostly farmland that now comprises the property of William du Pont. 1863 - Mr. Hanson Robinson bought the Cartwell Estate and the original school, donating a piece of land for a new schoolhouse. 1865 - The new one-room schoolhouse, built from stone, was constructed on the Philadelphia Toll Pike opposite the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. 1910 - The Mount Pleasant School housed primary and intermediate grades with some classes being held in the barn of Mr. William jordan. Miss Mary l. Robinson, a teacher of the Intermediate grades, formed an Audubon Society, members of the group wore badges with a green and white ribbon.
