and Representative Y, Congressman Pierre S. duPont The importance of the bicentennial lies not so much in the many symbols of our heri- tage that surround us in this year but rather in the importance of our understanding and appreciating our heritage. A sense of what has given us our freedoms is essential to the maintenance of them. Mouiver PLEASANT WVER - Zi' 12631316 DELA 7 LRE

Messages from our Senators Senator William V. Roth lr. Senator loseph R. Biden lr. ln celebrating the birth of this great nation of ours vve are honoring the courage the men and women who fought for the freedoms we enjoy today. You represent the future of America. l have every faith that you will demonstrate the courage and and wisdom necessary to meet the challenges of tomorrow and to preserve these unique freedoms. It's a pleasure to extend to Mount Pleasant High School my best wishes in this bicen- tennial year of 1976. Two hundred years young is a good time to rededicate our- selves to the ideals which motivated our founding fathers - and to recapture for the future that same spirit which has produced a national heritage of which we can all be proud. ,eq-s.. . . .c . , . ft'-pg rff ' ' Q .i iw r -trts-f 'r-' f r rrriarl rtfttrrt t ,tan ,. if Q: A g a ,. The land was ours before we were the land's. She was our land more than a hundred years Before we were her people. The Gift Outright Robert Frost Anniversaries have a habit of conjuring up memories of the past, this being the year of America's Bicentennial, we reviewed Mount Pleasant's role in the nation's history during this two hundred year period. Although only a recent newcomer to the American scene, the Mount Pleasant School District has played a vital role in the development of the nation's youth, and because of its high position in all phases of education, many reminiscences, looking back through the years, come to light. 1855 - The original schoolhouse was built on the Cartwell Estate, an area that was mostly farmland that now comprises the property of William du Pont. 1863 - Mr. Hanson Robinson bought the Cartwell Estate and the original school, donating a piece of land for a new schoolhouse. 1865 - The new one-room schoolhouse, built from stone, was constructed on the Philadelphia Toll Pike opposite the Mount Pleasant Methodist Church. 1910 - The Mount Pleasant School housed primary and intermediate grades with some classes being held in the barn of Mr. William jordan. Miss Mary l. Robinson, a teacher of the Intermediate grades, formed an Audubon Society, members of the group wore badges with a green and white ribbon. This may have been the origin of the present school colors. 1932 - The present Mount Pleasant Intermediate school was constructed. lt housed grades 1 through 8 and had an enrollment of 400 pupils. 1944 - Parents petitioned the State Board of Education to expand the educational program in the district to grades 1 through high school. 1945 - The State Board of Education recognized the Mount Pleasant District as a special district, enabling the educa- tional program to be supervised by a Board of Education and a superintendent. The first Board of Education included - Mr. C. Edward Duffy, President - Mrs. Lillian L. Paschall, Vice President - Dr. Crayton K. Black - Mrs. Elizabeth C. Rinehart - Dr. Ross L. Neagley, First Superintendent. Q'flllt'FfM, riiii..r1l1UL mi f KX, K r 'alll in W XN l il f ' II I 11 E 11- lllgl FH ll Nal l Q31 wt ll-.i 'q i-'1ILii?Li'Wii. Ni ,, i EA-si il' 'E ljglllllili llln .
