WJTS Coach: l-'randsen x E Varsity Basketball Success is usually measured in wins or medals acquired But success can also be accomplished or felt when great obstacles ha ve been overcome. This years Boys' Varsity Basketball Team can happib' feel success on all of these criteria. The Success of the 1983-1.984 team is embedded deeply within the players involved They are the real reason for its successf it is their game. 0nce a coach sends his team onto the court, the basic outcome is out of his hands. The leadership that emerged on this team guarantees these players will succeed in years to come. The 1983-84 Cardinal cagers had a Hne season. This followed a very successful summer league championshhv at San lose City College. 0f the 15 victories produced this year, many were against play-off bound opponents. There were eight defeats this year. Seven of those eight came against top ten Control Coast Section teams. This is a fact this team can be proud of Mt. Pleasant has always had a Hne tradition of team players. This year no exception to that rule. Three Cardinals averaged double figures for the season,' Mario Phillhns averaged 20.3 Shawn Chizanskos had 11.55 and Efferem Poynter scored 10.2 for the year. These three were selected to All-L eague Honors 1 st ream and 2nd team by the league coaches. 0ther fine contributions were made by Brian Bowers at center, Thad Phillhzs at guard and Ramiro Garcia at forward. Coming back next year to carry on the Card tradition will be many excellent players. lunior starters Mario Carcia and Thad Phillips will be supported by Manny Ayala, lt en Martinez, Darryl ltagsdale, and Ruben Lopez.
