This large team of fourteen had no returning players, so much of our practice time was spent on drills and techniques new to everyone. Captain Claudia Velazquez helped our team with her strong serves and total dedication and received the Coaches Award. Christina Ortiz was selected Most Valuable Player, Jocelyn Masaquel was the Most improved Player, Michelle Paccioretti was the Most Dedicated Player and Domenica Schriever was the Most Inspirational Player. This hard working group of girls improved tremendously and the three freshmen, Christina Chavez, Rolyn Acosta, and Iocelyn Masaquel will definitely be an asset to next years FroshlSoph team. A strong finish after a late start characterized the 1983 MPHS Cross Country season. The late workouts started because the team was in search ofa coach. Belatedly, Mr. Del Rio, an amateur jogger, and Mr. loe Salazar, a seasoned competitive harrier, took over the coaching reins. The Cardinal team's first meet was in official Mt. Hamilton Athletic League competition against highly ranked Independence and Santa Teresa high schools. The results were interesting, the harriers got their feet wet in active competition. The fast-paced track of the Del Mar Invitational meet was the next competition for the harrier squad. They learned of fast-paced, controlled running in a pack. A bus-ride over the hill to Soquel provided the only other invitational entered by the Cross Country squad. The hills of this challenging course provided a good work out and experience. Subsequent league meets at Alum Rock Park showed improved by Cardinal runners. However, the men's and women's squads were not always at full strength because of injuries to various runners at ditterent times. A pouring rain and muddy course was the background for Mt. Hamilton Athletic league finals on November 10, 1983. Some MPHS runners asked Are we going to run in this weather? The answer was soon provided as the Cardinal runners crossed the finish line with steam evaporating from their bodies and both sweat and rain upon their faces. After deep breaths the smile of achievement replaced the agony of the race as all runners recorded best times ever over the shortened 2.5 miles course. Most Valuable Runner Patrick Salomon was the only Cardinal to advance to the CCS-Regionals. Women runners were led by MVP Michelle Gutierrez and Most Improved Carla Dallas. MIP for the men's varsity was Mike Kurcina. Scott Adams, Tim Gihbions and Allan Correa also helped pace the Cardinals. The Cardinals look forward to a lot of hard work in the coming year as together they stride to restore competitive respectability to MPHS Cross Country.
