I-low will you make your mark in school, in the community, and in the world? One of the earliest and strongest instincts or motivating influences in the life of any human being is the desire for recognition, the yearning to gain the attention and the approval of others. Every individual, whether he knows it or not, is influenced and pushed along by this desire. There are many and various methods used to gain this recognition, to make a mark in the world. Most of our boys and girls choose worthy, useful, endeavors that are beneficial both to themselves and to the world in which they live. This makes for a happy, well-adjusted life. Unfortunately, however, some boys and girls, for reasons hard to understand, choose ugly, harmful means of gaining recognition. This route, if followed for long, can lead only to frustration, maladjustment and sometimes an unhappy, wasted life. Abraham Lincoln said, When I do good, I feel good, when I do bad, I feel bad. How will you gain recogni- tion? How will you be remembered? Your answer to these questions will be one of the most important answers that you will ever have to make. Marvin E. Amerson , s.
