ik The Mounder of 1941 ' STANDING: Coach Schrader, Wynne, Ballard, Coffman, Leonard, Shoemaker, Michael, Cheek. SEATED: Merriman, Claussen, Rosenbalm, Prugh, Strite, Baker, Young. FOOTBHLL Starting the season with nine returning lettermen, Coach Schrader had high hopes for the 1940 football- team, but lack of reserves and many minor injuries hampered the team throughout the season. The outstanding game of the season was the Homecoming game with Polo. In this game the Mounders soundly trounced a stubborn Polo team 25 to 7, Po1o's score coming in the last few minutes of play. The team also gave a good account of them- selves in the Dixon, Oregon, and Morrison games. While their won and lost record was not impressive, the boys were always in there fighting, playing a clean, hard game, and leave Mt. Morris with few regrets over the 1940 football season. Although he will lose senior letter winners Claussen, Young, Coffman, Hardesty, Michael, Merriman, Leonard, and Baker by graduation, Coach Schrader has returning lettermen Ballard, Shoemaker, Wynne, Rosenbalm, Strite, Prugh, Aufderbeck, and many other promising boys around whom he hopes to build a strong 1941 team. ,.f- 4 'N N ,- awe l1lZ1l1,ffff,.f ' ,.lI1,.l,I r , ?Q1aQga i221

,of gi? The Mounder of 1941 . if f Q i Cheek, Mgr., Shoemaker, Wynne, Ballard, Merriman, J. Coffman, Leonard, W. Coffman, Hyland, Coach Schrader BHSKETBHLL This year's basketball season must be termed a success. Although the team made only a mediocre showing over the regular season, Winning ten games and losing eight, they came back with surprising strength to win the Regional Tournament, held this year at Mt. Morris, and advanced to the Rockford Sectional Tournament for the fifth straight year. The Regional was truly the high point of the season. In their first game the Mounders came from behind to whip a strong Oregon team, champions of our con- ference. The second game was also a thriller as the boys beat a speedy Ashton quintet which had lost only two games all season. In the finals the Mounders subdued a greatly improved Byron team, which had Walked over Polo and Rochelle in its two previous engagements, to win the tournament and advance to the Sectional at Rockford. The school is already looking forward to a fine team next year, although hampered somewhat by the loss of senior letter winners Merriman, Leonard, and Coffman, Coach Schrader hopes to build a strong team around returning lettermen Ballard, Shoemaker, and Hyland, as Well as several other promising juniors and sophomores. Something should also be said about the large part the student body played in the success of this year's team. Their demonstration of school spirit through cheers and yells, especially during the tournaments, was outstanding. E243
