MORRIS-SONIAN Valeclictatory Parents, Teachers, and Friends: We are gathered here tonight to witness the initial step that seventy-five of tomorrow's citizens are about to take. This day will constantly remain alive in our memories, as will the co-operation and encouragement our teachers have shown us through these school years. To you, our parents and friends, we express deep gratitude for your suggestions, aid and conhdence. Last, but by no means least, as Emerson so wisely stated: An institution is but the lengthened shadow of one man, we wish to take this opportunity to thank our hne Superintendent Mr. Clark as the head of our excellent institution for the high standards he has maintained and his wise guidance and counsel. XVe should all be thankful that the world conflict has come to an end, with peace restored to us once more. Yes, it's restored to us now but it will be permanent only if we ourselves work to make it so. Again may I quote Emerson, Nothing can bring you peace but yourself: nothing can bring you peace but the triumph of principles. In these golden words lie the background of true peace. The thought behind this phrase should be clear enough so that each of us can grasp its meaning and plant it in our memories. Not only plant it there but make it an active part of our own philosophy of life. If we would carry out this philosophy, the term peace on earth would not only be stated in words but would live an actuality in the hearts of civilization. The world is looking to America as a guide to the betterment of mankind and as all great leaders, we should set a worthwhile example after which they may pattern themselves. However, in the corrupted currents of today, mankind's moral standards are declining. This has to come to an end, we must think of something beside just worldly pleasures, and must as individuals strive in our own small sphere of influence to be good examples. Thus, we realize again that peace based on the golden rule is not lasting unless we ourselves make it so, Our school has done its part by more than adequately preparing us for our journey into life. We must do our part and remember Life is a quarry out of which we are to mold and chisel and complete a character. One of the guiding principles which has been constantly held before us doing our education here in school is that an educated mind is ruled by reason, not emotion. Let us always remember this in whatever line of endeavor our future holds. Let us never allow ourselves to entertain the all too prevalent philosophy that the world owes us a living, or that we get something for nothing. The world will treat us justly only according to the honest efforts put forth by each of us. As Shakespeare said in his famous lines from Hamlet: To thine ownself be true, and it must follow as the night the day, thou canst not then be false to any man, Daria COENEN
