for the first time in recent history, all three levels of the matador football were in contention for league championships. rebounding from a few slack years, the matadors, though badly mauled by injuries, made this year a success- ful one. jess jenner spirited the offense through most of the season. when jess was injured during the hard fought helix game, john madigan took the reins. momentarily floun- dering, he soon showed the same poise as his predecessor. In a pre- season game tom sperla, a promising varsity back, sustained a crippling back in-jury paralyzing his legs permanently, so thought his doctor. tom wouldn't be defeated. he returned to school second semester with normal use of his legs. on most teams the backfield predominates the spotlight on the team. not to be outdone, center phil stevenson, tackles dan mc ewing and dan weldy provided a strong back- bone for any offensive play. the matadors ended the year with a five win and two loss record. varsity football coaches-1. offensive line: harold stratton, defensive backfield: brian smith, defensive line: russel boemke, head coach: dwighf morris, defensive line: rick abood. 2.tom gallagher nimbly out-steps his adversaries and makes the threat to their goal line very real. varsity team- 1. john madigan, 2. jess jenner, 3. clay smith, 4. mark richardson, 5. steve haynes, 6. rocky lancaster, 7. tom allen, 8. tom gallagher, 9. mike jacobsmier, 10. mike mcfarlin, 11. doug law, 12. ed morris, 13. everett arguillez, 14. phil williamson, 15. rick pacheco, 16. miguel cesena, 17. randy stringer, 18. phil hoff, 19. earl carter, 20. vic owens, 21. mike benson, 22. bob ludwig, 23. chris palazzolo, 24. dan huff. fcontinuedy -4 . j 1 . 2 Q N we sl me 17 jg ' 19 N- K .1 .R ' K V ' . - J .:: wi 1.
