The Damage Controlmen stand ready in case of fire or explosion. The possibility of a fire and explosion is always evident. The DC's job is T0 put out the fire and repair as best they can the damage caused. The ship- fitters aid them when metal work like welding is required or pipe needs fixing. The DC's and SF's are always prepared to move into action at the first alarm of fire. An uncontrolled fire aboard an ammunition ship could mean the lives of every man aboard.
