alt My hope is that, in years to come, this 1966 cruise book will serve as a happy reminder of the finest Seventh Fleet deploy- ment any ammunition ship has ever had. You whose photographs appear on these pages made it that and you may be justifi- ably proud. I certainly am proud of you. Among your plaudits are these: From COMMANDER SEVENTH FLEET. Your performance during recent replenishment of Oriskany was most impressive to observe. The spirit and proficiency with which you went about the task was indeed gratifying to see and is indicative of unusually fine morale and superior state of training. It is no wonder that your name is getting around the fleet as a great performer. Keep it up and on this occasion I want to offer a most well deserved well done. VADM John J. Hy1and. FromCOMMANDER SER- VICE GROUP THREE. Records and re- ports are satisfying evidence of the pursuit To the Men of MOUNT KATMAI AE-lo for doing a job better than anyone thought it could be done with an aged fleet ammo ship and Norwegian Ste am. A heartfelt well done to MOUNT KATMAI and crew. RADM Janney. FromCOMMANDER DESTROYER SQUADRON THIRTY TWO. After seeing your fine ship giving us such outstanding service, we have decided that you are more than eligible for honorary membership in DESRON 32. We would be honored if you would wear our squadron decal on your bridge wing. Such commendations are not earned by accident, nor are 437 short tons per hour transfer rates when the highest previously accomplished by any AE had been 303. These achievements are a direct result of your spirit, your skill, your teamwork and your desire to excel -- all the attributes which make you a gre at crew. I am grateful to have been your shipmate . aww

This deployment marked I I During her 1966 deployment to the Western Pacific, the ammu- her 14th tour of duty, in 21 years commissioned service, with Seventh Fleet. MOUNT KATMAI completed her last deployment in December 1965 in support of the Vietnam War. Except that the scene of operations was shifted some 1,000 miles South, the deployments in the South China Sea have been very reminiscent of MOUNT KATMAI's three deployments with the Seventh Fleet during the Korean War. From 1950 to 1953 the ship supported United Nations forces off Korea with only short periods in the United States. For about three months in the sum- mer of 1950 she was the only ammunition ship engaged in replen- ishment operations with the Combatant Force of the United Nations. For her performance of duty during that time MOUNT KATMAI was awarded the Navy Unit Commendation. In the 12 years between Korea and South Vietnam MOUNT KATMAI followed the established operational pattern for Service Force Ship's of the Pacific Fleet -- participation in training exercises off the West Coast as a unit of the First Fleet, over- haul and maintenance periods in the San Francisco Bay area, nine deployments to the Western Pacific for operations with the Seventh Fleet. MOUNT KATMAI is named after a semi-active volcano, which is located in the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes in MOUNT KATMAI National Monument at the head of the Alaskan Peninsula.
