Commonding Ctficer H- l'4'!5-s. gy, If Executive John Stuart Herman was born May 26, 1922 in Philadel- phia, raised in Floral Park, Long Island and attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before enlisting in the Navy in August 1942. He was commissioned Ensign and designated a Naval Aviator in Oct. 1943. World War II was spent on jeep carriers in the Pacific flying TBF Avenger Torpedo Bombers. Post war tours followed in patrol planes, and instructor duty. In 1956 LCDR Herman graduated from Test Pilot School at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River and commenced a three year tour as a project pilot in the Flight Test Division. Sea duty followed as Operations Officer of Car- rier Air Group Eight in FORRESTAL and 1961 as Com- manding Officer of Attack Squadron Sixty-six in INTREPID flying A4 Skyhawks. After duty on the staffof Commander, Air Force, Atlantic, CDR Herman assumed command of Attack Squadron Forty-two, the first A6A Intruder Squad- ron in the Navy. After serving as Operation Officer of FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, CAPT Herman reported to Joint Task Force Two in Albuquerque for duty as Test Director. After more than 24 years in the Navy and over 6,000 hours flying time CAPT Herman assumed command of MOUNT KATMAI on December 1, 1966. Mrs. Herman and two boys reside in Albuquerque and one daughter is a senior at Old Dominion College in Norfolk. Officer George W. Tracy was born in Evanston, Illinois on Feb- ruary 4, 1926. He calls San Diego, California his home. His Navy Career began in March 1943. LCRD Tracy spent the next eleven years, with a short period of inactive duty, progressing from Seaman to Chief. His rating speciality was as Air-Electronics Technican. Most ofhis duty assign- ments as an enlisted man were with Flight Crews located on the East Coast. LCDR Tracy attended OCS in Newport, R.I,, and was com- missioned Ensign in August 1954. He was assigned to the USS ELECTRA initially for a short tour as Salvage Boat Officer. Subsequent tours found him as Ops Boss aboard the EPPING FOREST and as Gunnery Officer and Executive Officer on the JOHN R. CRAIG. Shore duty in San Diego at the NAVCOMSTA followed by duty with COMSERVRON ONE as Plans and Readiness Officer pre- ceded his assignment as Executive Officer aboard MOUNT KATMAI in January 1965. LCDR Tracy is married to the former Grace L. Stampfly of Bellingham, Washington. They have five children. The oldest daughter Terry is married and lives in San Diego, a son Steve is in his first year at MT. Diablo Jr. College. LCDR and Mrs. Tracy make their home in Concord and are both avid bowling fans.
