Commonding Ctficer H- l'4'!5-s. gy, If Executive John Stuart Herman was born May 26, 1922 in Philadel- phia, raised in Floral Park, Long Island and attended Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute before enlisting in the Navy in August 1942. He was commissioned Ensign and designated a Naval Aviator in Oct. 1943. World War II was spent on jeep carriers in the Pacific flying TBF Avenger Torpedo Bombers. Post war tours followed in patrol planes, and instructor duty. In 1956 LCDR Herman graduated from Test Pilot School at the Naval Air Test Center, Patuxent River and commenced a three year tour as a project pilot in the Flight Test Division. Sea duty followed as Operations Officer of Car- rier Air Group Eight in FORRESTAL and 1961 as Com- manding Officer of Attack Squadron Sixty-six in INTREPID flying A4 Skyhawks. After duty on the staffof Commander, Air Force, Atlantic, CDR Herman assumed command of Attack Squadron Forty-two, the first A6A Intruder Squad- ron in the Navy. After serving as Operation Officer of FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT, CAPT Herman reported to Joint Task Force Two in Albuquerque for duty as Test Director. After more than 24 years in the Navy and over 6,000 hours flying time CAPT Herman assumed command of MOUNT KATMAI on December 1, 1966. Mrs. Herman and two boys reside in Albuquerque and one daughter is a senior at Old Dominion College in Norfolk. Officer George W. Tracy was born in Evanston, Illinois on Feb- ruary 4, 1926. He calls San Diego, California his home. His Navy Career began in March 1943. LCRD Tracy spent the next eleven years, with a short period of inactive duty, progressing from Seaman to Chief. His rating speciality was as Air-Electronics Technican. Most ofhis duty assign- ments as an enlisted man were with Flight Crews located on the East Coast. LCDR Tracy attended OCS in Newport, R.I,, and was com- missioned Ensign in August 1954. He was assigned to the USS ELECTRA initially for a short tour as Salvage Boat Officer. Subsequent tours found him as Ops Boss aboard the EPPING FOREST and as Gunnery Officer and Executive Officer on the JOHN R. CRAIG. Shore duty in San Diego at the NAVCOMSTA followed by duty with COMSERVRON ONE as Plans and Readiness Officer pre- ceded his assignment as Executive Officer aboard MOUNT KATMAI in January 1965. LCDR Tracy is married to the former Grace L. Stampfly of Bellingham, Washington. They have five children. The oldest daughter Terry is married and lives in San Diego, a son Steve is in his first year at MT. Diablo Jr. College. LCDR and Mrs. Tracy make their home in Concord and are both avid bowling fans.

Jesse A. Naylor was born 23 August 1920 at Linn, Kansas. His boyhood days were spent in Kansas where he attended Kansas City Jr. College for a year and a half prior to entering the U.S. Naval Academy in 1939. He was commissioned Ensign June 1942 and reported aboard the USS COLHOUN as Gunnery Officer. A short two months on duty and COLHOUN was sunk off Guadal- canal by Japanese bombers. His next assignment was as Engineer Officer aboard USS SPENCE, one of Arleigh C31 Knotb Burke's Little Beavers. While aboard SPENCE he was promoted to LTJG and subsequently to LT. Having qualified as a Salty DD Sailor he was sent to Submarine School in New London to add to his qualifica- tions. USS SEALION was his first assignment down deep where he was the First Lieutenant from April to November 1945. LT Naylor reported aboard USS POMFRET in December 1945 where he spent three and half years as Gunnery, Engineering, and Executive Officer. He was relieved April 1949 and spent a two year shore tour at BUPERS, adding another half stripe while he was there. September 1951 and LCDR Naylor was back at sea aboard USS CLAMAGORE for ten months as Executive Officer. Following CLAMAGORE he commanded USS TRUMPET- FISH for two years. Commanding Ctticer July 1965 - Nov 1966 Newport, R.I. was his next home where he was a student and then on the Staff of the Naval War College for nearly three years. He was promoted to CDR in 1955 while at the Naval War College. Subsequent tours found him as Operations 'Officer for COMSUBFLOT ONE, then Commander Submar1neD1V1S10U 33. He was Undersea Warfare Officer for CINCPACFLT for three Years in Pearl Harbor. September 1962 and CAPT Naylor was black on the Mating land at the Pentagon as Chief, Strategic Forces Brant! , Soviet Bloc Division in the Defense Intelligence Agency' On July 31, 1965 CAPT Naylor took command of USS MOUNT KATMAI until December l, 1966. From the MOUNT KATMAI CAPT Naylor reported to Defense III- stitute Language School in Washington, D.C. Among the various decorations CAPT NaY10I' is enutlig to wear are the Legion of Merit, Bronze Star,.Iil1II1,l:1it Heart, Commendation Ribbon, and the Presidentla Citation. CAPT Naylor's family makes their home in. Arlington, Va. Two sons and two daughters keep his Wlfe 112119221 on the go. Mrs. Naylor is an accomplished af lsision writer. She has sold several paintings and her revearly of The Navy Wife was published by Harper and Row in 1966.
