1973 VOLUME 78 MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE SOUTOWN U.S.A. Commencement 1973. The culmination of four years of sorrow, joy, frus- tration, and fulfillment. And in spite of whatever feelings we might have about our stay here, we must concede that we have all yielded to the tide of change. Freshman year, the four years seemed to stretch out endlessiy, while all the stories of the good old college days” filled our heads. What , we asked. “Is good about four bluebooks, three papers, and four hundred pages of reading?” Unfortunately no one really answered our question. Instead we were told that work at Mt. Holyoke was rough; was that not true of any good school? When upset about our grades we were pacified with the notion that every- one knew that a 'B' at Mt. Holyoke was worth an ’A’ any place else. Nevertheless, as our class shrank in number during sophomore year, it was evident that disillusionment was in the air—and in the spring the number of us going away on the Exchange or abroad was phenomenal. Yet the September of junior year promised a change. We had a place—we knew more people on campus, we produced a show; we were the BIG sisters now! Time instead of dragging, was racing, and we were forced to face the question of what to do after graduation. The rest of the story is fairly clear. Our personal trials and tribulations were many varied. Each person will have to individually assess the value of the education she has received here. But together we grew, we worked, and played; sharing experiences, dreams and fears. So now, we present to you—the best years of our lives. Mount Holyoke means work; but some days when I get caught up with test tubes and lab reports, and independent work and bluebooks. and ... and .... and ... I'll walk outside, see the sun shining and forget about the papers, and lab reports— realizing how beautiful it is just to be alive. 5 LINDA S. My friends have be- come some of the most valued and precious symbols of the time here. If I have gamed a little appreciation of the beauty of other people, it has been worth my while. It is your nature to be small and cozy, domestic and weak, how lucky, little tree, to have a pot to grow in. With living creatures one must begin very early to dwarf their growth: the bound feet, the crippled brain, the hair in curlers, the hands you love to touch. -Marge Piercy 181 JAN AHLBERG Philosophy If one more person asks me if Mt.
