Each member of the Class of 1962 has her own personal view of Mount Holyoke—a view compounded of what she has done, how she sees things, and what aspects of the College have touched her most. So how can anything be said to all of you about your College that is not a common denominator cliche of autumn days, milk and crack- ers. skiing week ends, and blue book clutch? College is the sum of friends, of courses, and of ideas, but how can we equate embryology and a blonde roommate from Connecticut with literary criticism and a brunette from Illinois? Perhaps they arc equal in this: Each has opened a door to the human personality, and each has helped make connections among ideas. All doors open on other doors until, at graduation, a Mount Holyoke student realizes, with greater humility than she had as an undergraduate, that she has just begun to learn. But already she has learned of a hundred possibilities and a dozen hopes. Do not think this meager; a dozen possibilities and one hope could be enough for a lifetime. Your lives will consist of selecting among the possibilities, and making actual the hopes. Achievement may never be quite what was aimed at, but it will be real, hence bet- ter than any dream. Mount Holyoke, as the place where you opened many new doors to all the lovely, exciting, and worthwhile possibilities of our trou- bled but striving earth, will always be yours. In turn you. and what you find and make, will always belong in a way to your College. Richard Glenn Gctlcll
