r South Hadley. Massachusetts O E. Kane To Miss Harriet Newhall 4 Director Emeritus of Admissions ‘‘There is a young lady named Ef; We all know she loves a good bet. Though often she's lost And a dinner it's cost, Has she ever been bankrupt? Not yet! UAMARADA, 1915 Miss Harriet Newhall, for thirty years Director of Admissions of Mount Holyoke, has long been the respected and admired friend of the faculty, administration, and students of the College. Her devotion to the ever- increasing task of college admissions, her astute judgment and her great understanding, have made her contribution to Mount Holyoke one of inestimable value. Although Miss Newhall retired in 1958, the Alumnae Medal of Honor citation which she received in 1 950 expresses now and will express for many years to come, the admiration and gratitude of the many who have been privileged to know her: “Harriet Newhall, Class of 1914, and Director of Admissions; admired by students, trusted by hundreds of worried parents, invaluable counselor of administration and faculty, friend of school prin- cipals and college trustees, dear to alumnae the world around:—by your humor and wisdom, sense of judgment, and that attractive quality of leader- ship that makes you one of the foremost daughters of Mount Holyoke College, you are a delight and a strong support to everyone who knows you and you bind together the alumnae and the college.” 8 11 'fi 'x.v M RY LY m. Goudet 67 spotlighting 1958-1959 College in the fall means seeing friends again, excited chatter about the summer, unpacking cartons and suitcases, putting up curtains, and finding favorite stuffed ani- mals to decorate a new room. It means a new beginning when, after Convocation, on that first Monday morning, you make a fresh start on new courses, write the first lines on a clean page in your notebook, and date them September 29. After a few weeks of classes, you begin to speculate about the day when the Mary Lyon bells will ring out, announcing Mountain Day. And early one clear, crisp morning, it hap- pens—your classes are called off for the day and everyone crowds into the dorm kitchen to pack a lunch. The campus soon looks de- serted, while the surrounding countryside becomes dotted with girls on bicycles, hiking, or on horseback ... a whole day to bask in the sun or to stretch your muscles, which may have been suffering already from li- brary fatigue—and then not caring about the stiffness the next morning because of the fun you had exploring or just enjoying the beauty of a New England fall. Soon afterwards, at the first all-College dance, Llamie, Yanks and Rebs gather to dance in Chapin or swing to the rhythm of the Dixieland jazz band in Wilbur. The days hurry by, the red and yellow leaves turn brown and rustle as you walk across campus, and the wooden steps are put up, signs that winter is coming. When you re- turn to school after Thanksgiving weekend, you realize that there are only a few weeks left before Christmas vacation and the be- ginning of a new year. I 72 . Cody During these weeks, it seems that more books are read and more papers are written than at any other time, but suddenly, with the first snow flakes, Christmas comes to campus and the hundreds of lights on the big tree by the P.O. dispel the dreariness of the cold, dark sky. And then one night, the seniors meet secretly to decorate the tree in the dorm living room, and the evening passes quickly while you sing favorite carols ... and on Holly Hop weekend, Kendall resounds with dance music and gaiety. 73 Life at college also means those important mo- ments spent alone with a book, or just reflec- ting, and it means the opportunity to hear and meet learned and distinguished people. Sir John Gielgud's presentation of Shakespeare, the symposium on Security and the Arms Race, or the inspiration of a beautiful and masterful performance by the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra, are invaluable experi- ences which will never be forgotten. 1 4 President Gettcll, Sir John Gielgud, Mrs. Getteil President Gettell, Dr. Eugene Rabinowitch, Miss Ruth Lawson, Mr. Robert Sprague, General Charles H. Bonestecl, Mr. Arthur Ryan With the first signs of spring, heavy winter clothes are replaced by blazers and ber- muda shorts and the campus awakens with new spirit. It is no longer dark when you walk back from the library before supper and in- stead of warily avoiding big patches of ice on the sidewalks, you find yourself happily jumping over puddles. Sun worshippers gather on Pageant Field or Prospect and the skiing fans turn to golf or tennis. On Fathers’ Weekend, Dads attend classes, have buffet luncheon in the dorms, and watch the inter- class canoe races ... t 1 and applaud for The Ghosts Who Once Were Children, and for Water Ballet s an- nual spring performance. The Canoe Meet on Upper Lake, the golf course and the tennis courts provide more fun and entertainment, and Saturday evening, the May Queen and !her court are presented, and Dads are spe- cial dates at the dance in Chapin. c Seated: Irene York, Rolanda Stoneback. Standing: Susan Kinnell, Elsie Longenecker, Ann Curry (Queen), Patricia Leong, Marietta Henry. Graduation weekend in June means the end of your undergraduate days at Mt. Holyoke, but it also means another beginning, new op- portunities for learning, and a growing ap- preciation of your four years at College. The Ivy Exercises and the DC play on Fri- day begin the weekend festivities. On Sat- urday, there is the Alumnae Parade, the Grove Exercises, the President's Reception, the Glee Club Concert, and then Senior Sere- nade on Upper Lake. The Baccalaureate Service is Sunday morning, and in the after- noon, the faculty and seniors process into Kendall. This year, on June 7, at the One Hundred and Twenty-second Commencement, you may receive your diploma, turn the tassel on your cap to the left side, and leave Kendall as an alumna. But whether you are an undergrad- uate or a graduate of Mt. Holyoke, you are a part of its history, and as you write the history of your own life, you will find that Mt. Holyoke is a part of you, too. 79 80 81 Honoraries 82 MISS MARJORIE C. BECK 1959 MR. GEORGE E. HALL MR. AND MRS. DAVID P. LEONARD MR. AND MRS.
