The) have participated not only in formal leas and gracious living dinners but have also joined with us in the fun of C.i. jam sessions Halloween trick-or-treat and O.C. square dances. Their presence at eve- ning lectures and chapel services has made them an integral part of the more seri- to ns at college gathering, an innovation widely acclaimed by the student body. nd he won our full lovalty at the ceremonv of his inauguration. 9 • 9 C We waited with eagerness last fall for the Presidents Convocation address, which would outline his views for Mount Holyoke’s future. It came in the form 9 of a challenge: the Mount Holyoke undergraduate and alumna should war on mediocrity” and war on war. You told us. President Gettell, that it is in the power of women, as wives and mothers, to improve the world. We accept this faith with humility, but we take up the challenge with courage. s the first graduating class of your administra- tion, we shall go out into the world determined to acknowledge the inspiration of your words by action. 5 Improving international understanding: Foreign Students' Night “In that tradition, then, let me suggest that all members of the College Commu- nity join with me in trying to look ahead, in seeking to discern the future needs of society, and in orienting the College to help fulfill them. This requires a joint ef- fort of self-examination, with one eye on what we are doing here at Mount llol- oke. and one eye on its relevance to the needs of society. Convocation Address, Sept. 22, 1957 . The Mount Holyoke tradition, as I understand it. is neither vegetable nor crackpot; neither stagnant nor muddied.' It is, as good tradition always is. the dis- tillation of enduring values, tested by time, the continuance of that which is proven good, tin rejection of that which is not good, and the constant rc-cxamina- lion. retesting and reassessment, of it- values. “There i one aspect of tin Mount Hol- yoke tradition which, in this one hundred twenty-first year of the College, merits our especial attention as we start a new year and a new administration. It is an old idea, which, in essence, is always new. ‘ Here it is: More than anything else, it i the Mount Holyoke College tradition to be ahead of its times. Too often one thinks of tradition onl m as a form of looking backward. This our College can do. and with vast pride. But every time we look backward, at the great names o! those who shaped the destinies of the College, we find individuals whose principal characteristic was that they looked forward, farther forward than their contemporaries. They were quiet revolu- tionaries. who sensed a social need and anticipated, through the College, the ful- fillment of that need.  Summer has sunk us and we !i« I nder the heaps and mounds of mas. Perhaps we need less emphasis on the departmental major as a stepping stone to graduate work, and more on fostering the proeess of learning and developing the art of thinking. hat we need, above all. is an intellectual experience in college that will carry through all the years, and provide tin foundation for a life of continuing growth and enrichment. College work should never he conceived nor presented to the student as a terminal experience, nor as an escape or retreat from the larger world hevond the campus. The First Morning A change of administration is infrequent and involves new personalities. A cycle of which we have been a part is completed and a new one generated. No longer can we look at our four years of college as the present; we must now divide them into the past and the beginning of the future. Participating in this transition point of M omit llolyoke history is a revelation. l or we are very much aware that in spite of the change in leadership, in spite of innovations, the character of the College has remained the same. Since its foundation in 1837, Mount llolyoke has been striving to realize tlie ideal of the enlightened and constructive woman, who can respond intelligently to the needs of her time and her society. This objective unites all administrations—although the woman may change from Panganaskian to Uncommon. A Llamarada coming in this year of transition will try to evoke a sense of Mount Holyoke’s constant growth and its underlying stability, and to suggest musings on the interdependence of the past, present and future. The Grove and Mary Lyon's Grave, 1890 “The requirements for graduation were increased by ('hanging trigonometry from an elective to a required course in 1855 and doing the same three years later with the history of literature. All reporting was dispensed with and the old system of fixed rules was re- placed by one which stressed individual effort and personal honor, leaving each student to he 4a law unto herself ” “Culture for Miss Woolley implied not only those graces that characterize civ- ilized living but a sympa- thetic mature understand- ing of national and interna- tional problems. President 1890-1900 14 Mary Emma Woolley, President 1901-37 Koawell Gray Ham by Henry Rox, 194() Nantucket, Dec. 3, 1957 To the Class of 1958: Through the thoughtful offices of the Alumnae Asso- ciation, Mrs. Ham anti I have recently been admitted respectively alumna and alumnus of your college—the latter honor a rare and beautiful vindication of free enterprise at birth! We have found, as you will find, that alumnahood from Mount Holyoke is a joy that does not diminish with time. What the source of that joy is difficult to calculate, except by those who have lived a space of years within the family circle and have partaken of its spirit. But in varying degree it derives from a long and distinguished tradition tracing back to our founder, from the inspiration of great men and w om- en who have entered into its being, from the endless variety and dedication of its faculty, from the beauty of its place, and significantly from the continued loyalty of its students and their capacity to enjoy life—five days shall they labor anti upon the sixth and seventh like John drive furiously to the north ami to the south. It is a joy that defies analysis, hut you know and I know that it exists. Of our Mount Holyoke, “‘Age cannot wither nor custom stale, her infinite variety.” And now we w ho have had the life giving experience of partaking with you of that spirit, and accompanying you upon some part of your journey, wish you well in its continuance.
