Cramer S We can never forget the broad-shouldered frame with the flapping tic and lumbering gait who fondly called us “dahlinks.” Although he was like a Renaissance scholar with a myriad of interests and an unbounded treasury of knowledge, we also remember his devotion to his family, warm personality and enthusiasm for sharing his knowledge. In the classroom history became more than names and dates as, with a special gleam in his eye, he would spike his noteless lectures with colorful anecdotes not to be found in the text books. Outside the classroom he was a devoted friend, counselor and class honorary. For these and many other reasons we humbly dedicate our year book to the memory of Frederick H. Cramer. Five Mr. and Mrs. Denis Johnston Miss Berjouiiie Andreassian Six Mrs. Frederick Cramer Mr. and Mrs. Donald Morgan Mr. and Mrs. John Lobb Miss Ruth Elvldt Honoraries Seven for Eight Nine Long, Litmb president, Mapes, Rutherford, O'Shea. The changes made last year in the social regulations are just one example of what an active student organization can accomplish. Ten Nominating Committee: Blackburn, Singer, Bruton, Howard, H Mapes, Robertson chairman. Lamb, Washburn, Gepfert, Burns, Ma 'o' The official looking group of people who sic around the table on the second floor of Mary E. Woolley hall every Thursday evening arc not a bunch of ogres. Actually, of course, they do a million and one other things includit g answering unanswerable freshman questions, checking up on pumpkins or Christmas trees (and mistletoe), an . solving the inevitable problems. Committee Head: There is much more to living in a college community than attending classes and abiding by the social regulations. In order to organize this many faceted life, committees arc appointed to take charge of such things as reducing fire risks, making voc. ttf information available, raising money for college projec s, selecting movies to be shown on campus, and providin for recreational facilities in Wilbur. All the heads of campus organizations are automatically members of Unity Council. They meet weekly to discuss problems, new ideas, and to sort out dates for the various extra-curricular campus activities. The separate clubs and organizations can then sec their own role in the perspective of general campus activity. The head of Unity Council is also the head of NSA on campus, and is there- fore a well informed liaison between our campus and the other colleges in the National Student Association. National Student Association An organization of college student governments, National Student Association was created to further knowledge and understanding among colleges. On campus N.S.A. sponsors International Students’ Day, has established a Travel Bureau, and has taken on the responsibility of the daily lunch bulletin through its publicity committee. Travnor, Skerly, Butcher, Urqubart chairman, James, Backus, Howard absent. T hirtcen Fellowship Curter, Cooper, Underhill prendent, Jurgmstn. The Fellowship of Faiths, aside from being the college religious organization, extends its influence throughout the community by its Social Service program. Fellowship workers assist in the Holyoke settlements, nursery schools, Girl Scouts, and Rabbit Hollow. This year they also took on the job of serving as junior hostesses at the Holyoke USO. The other main areas of activity are Faith Education, Interfaith Education, and Worship. Faith Education is provided through the Protestant, Jewish, and Fourteen of Faiths Catholic groups; Interfaith Education offers an opportunity for exchanging information and ideas beyond one s individual faith. The Campus Conference, which occurs early in February, is one of the highlights of the year. Thursday night meditation services held weekly, and monthly early morning communion services conducted according to the various denominations by ministers in the area arc but a part of the Worship program. Fellowship also plays an important role in the morning chapels, regular Church services, and Vespers. Andy, Miss Eisenhart, and Cirot Fifteen Practice makes perfect Class Choirs The various class choirs arc responsible for much of the music on campus: the freshmen generally make their debut en grand masse around Christmas, the sophomores gallantly sing once a week for chapels, the juniors faithfully produce most of the Sunday church music, and the seniors retire gracefully with an occasional church or vesper service and maybe a joint concert with another college. V-8’s The small exclusive singing group on campus was organized during the war and still goes by the name of the Y-8’s. This year they made a new record, and everyone wishes them luck in sales. As they hold their weekly rehearsals in the C.I., it is sometimes possible to be created to a preview of the season’s attractions. Herne, Rocbestic, Hopkins, Clark, Search, McGomgle, Collins, McLaughlin, Spar non. Lane, Patncelli, Kenyon leader, Brickeff, Watts. Sixteen Orchestra If you should wander into the music building some Thursday evening, you would undoubtedly hear the college orchestra practicing their crescendos or appogiaturas for the annual M.I.T. concert or a home appearance. This year they worked in conjunction with Dramatic Club on the fall production of Peer Gynt. The musicians hail from the town, faculty, and students. Glee Club This year marked the thirtieth anniversary of the Mount Holyoke Glee Club Christmas concerts in Town Hall. Pre-New York concerts were presented on campus and in Holyoke with the singers garbed in festive red cassocks. In the spring the melody makers took to the road for joint concerts with Bowdoin and Wesleyan. A good time was had by all. Seventeen Howard, LefkowitWhile president. Singer, Trevathnn, Muehrcke. Mr. Duncan Dramatic Club If you enjoy wallowing around in buckets of paint, fitting an old costume to a new shape, conjuring up hitherto unheard of but necessary props, operating a gramaphone , guiding people to the place their ticket requires, juggling spots and watts, or even acting, then D.C. is waiting for your talents. To be- come a member you must spend just twenty hours working on productions. Dramatic Club traditionally presents two plays a year besides the freshman one-acts in early spring. Last fall Dance Club and orchestra augmented the cast of the ambitious Peer Gynt production. The Crew Eighteen On tbt Air This is WMHC, your Mount Holyoke College broad- casting station, 820 on your dial ... A four year old youngster who has already outgrown its baby clothes, WMHC is definitely hear to stay. There is a variety of programs, something for everybody's taste. You can hear news, world or campus; music, classical or semi-classical, lust for listening pleasure or to study by; talent shows, dramatic presentations, interviews, and taped lectures. Tryouts are held each year and anyone with an interest in script writing, engineering, production, or announcing is invited to come get some valuable experience. Bailey, Roberts, Englander manager, Lee, Rogouski, Weir nick, Young, Zuifl, Davis, Starr, Parker absent. Nineteen The purpose of IRC is to help create student interest in foreign affairs. Once a month there is a principal speaker, and weekly groups gather for informal current events discussions. One of the highlights of the year is the annual conference in February with well known speakers, discussions, and informal question periods. IRC is also a co-sponsor of Foreign Students’ Night. IRC Chaps ft. Hoiton, Klein, Donnells president. Political Union A new and struggling organization on campus is the Political Union which encourages interest in studying domestic issues. The club hopes to help members become more familiar with the party system and to form unbiased opinions of the three major political factions, the Democrats, the Republicans and the Independents. Litnpfloii, Klein, Holton, Traynor, Urquharr, Sommer Twenty Libem! arts Culture on campus is given a large boost by Friends of Art, the organization responsible for bringing art exhibitions to Dwight, giving students an opportunity to rent a framed print from the lending collection, and sponsoring special art lectures. Membership is composed of interested townsfolk, students and faculty. Piser, Parker, Lindholm, absent Gaeta, Knebel, Kane, O'Brien. Marsha! , Bridges, Wilson chairman, Spence, Walsh Blackstick Blackstick is an honorary literary society with a traditionally small member- ship. Elections to the society arc based on creative writing abilirv Members meet to discuss their own works. Twenty-one The Mount Holyoke News, almost forty this year, shows no signs of fatigue. The staff, a tireless crew, lets nothing interfere with the weekly edition. Even this year s Hallowe'en “dummy robbery couldn't prevent the News from making its faithful Friday appearance, although it meant several girls had to stay up until the wee small hours to make it possible. For anything that's worth knowing . . . past or future campus events, somebody's new social status, the exam schedule, programs for the week on WMHC, or student opinion on some controversial issue . . . consult the News. And if a wider audience is needed for a personal viewpoint, write a letter to the editor and see your idea in print. Much Ado Barn, btilxr, Bilker, Ro), Leech, Biers tedt, London, Austin, Sharrar, Broun, Hazard % Bacbmann, Scott, Donaldson editor, Gotuals. T wtnty-two LI am it unfolds Llamarada The seven solemn seniors who lock themselves up periodically in a third floor room of Mary Woolley Hall and mumble about ‘cutting,” “cropping,” agd bleeding” arc not really morbid characters. They arc merely editors (all of them) of the college year book and are probably struggling with some little problem which they alone can solve as they work in utmost secrecy. Only they know about such things as dedication, divider pages, theme, and the May Queen court. Not until that day in spring when the Llamies come out will the rest of the campus know what the year book staff has been plotting since the spring before. The editors just hope that the secrets were worth guarding. Mijj Brum and Joantt Scherer, Pratt, Williams editor, Rnscb, Wwkel, Spence, Clarke. KouLU tUl Twenty-four All students are automaticallv members of the Athletic j Association. Besides the class team sports which eater mostly to the more talented sportswomen, there are the dorm competitions which encourage everyone to participate. Anybody can use the privilege of reserving the club room, lounge, or swimming pool for special occasions. There is no intercollegiate competition, but play days among various colleges provide much fun for both participants and observers. The Just Desserts in the fall is a gala affair and the occasion for fall awards night. At this time the Sarah Streeter award is bestowed upon some deserving senior. Throckmorton president, Wasbbourne, J(nsvoid, Bruton. Athletic Association Matiti tion Do vou have the urge to get away from civilization every now and then? Do you enjov cooking over an open fire in a rustic cabin? Arc canoe, hiking, or ski trips your idea of fun? Does square dancing appeal to you? If you can answer ’ves” to any of these questions and arc not a member of Outing Club, then you'd better climb aboard the station wagon right away. Twenty-six Dance Club Have you ever wondered who those leotarded, barefoot maidens are who so gracefully twist and ieap their way through various performances? They are )ance Club members, of course. Besides their own show in February, they appear in Dramatic Club pro- iuctions, Parents' Day programs, and illustrated lectures around the area. They sponsor trips, also, to invite the interest of non-dancers. Water Ballet L sfcy Pro.uu tmmer, Broughton president. Don’t splash, guide right, point vour toes, and smile, smile, smile.” These are the most frequently heard words just before the little mer- maids of Water Ballet dive into a performance . . . here or elsewhere. Many waterlogged hours arc spent before a routine is ready for public view, but no one has cut a performance yet. At long last, Mount Holyoke had become a reality and we were the brand new Freshman Class. Somewhat dizzied by meetings, teas, physical exams, and tests, we soon found, however, that we knew where Skinner, Clapp, and the Chem building were, and could even correlate a few names with faces. Before we knew it, recognition became friendship, and all of our friendships became united in Class Spirit under the symbol of the Red Pegasus. Eight to the bar Thirty Ah, go on and smile Remember chat autumn day when, as red fire engines, we pretended to be scared while the seniors tried to be stern? We’ll also never forget our first Mountain Day, blue books, Holly Hop, semester exams, or Spring, when we futilcly fought off spring fever and proudly took part in the Ring Presentation. Freshman memories are many: Gorging “goodies” at the C.I., bridge games in the smoker, “mixers,” the great day when wc received our beer mugs decorated with the magic numerals “58,” and that fondest remembrance of all, the guidance, generosity and real help our Big Sisters gave us. We’ll never forget them . . . Ach Liebcr! High society Relies from Mande lies I'm a little fire-engine Thirt y-one South I Lulln, 7 mtltt Rest for th( ueary Hey there After the gay potpourri of freshman year we set out, with the aid of chief cook Althea Hewitt and her talented assistants, to prove to Mount Holyoke that Heinz '57 Varieties could blend into a wonderful sophomore class. The first step was to sift together—at a delightful picnic in Wilbur—sophomore good spirits, C. I. food, and the sparkle of laughter to insure a slump-proof combination. Then mix and chill on a frosted December night, with the happiness of Christmas and the traditional carol serenade to give our mixture a unity and flavor of companionship all its own. Next, spice the concoction with the gaiety of freshman sisters in a fun-for-all reception complete with punch and a play Bubbling over Hung over on college life from the Martian point of view. After this, stir in plenty of spirit to flavor the prehistoric ' grub of Soph Skit, pour in the class song to make the mixture light and sweet, and, finally, frost the sparkling confection with the magic of soft lights and sweet music, brightened by the glamor of our first class dance, Soph Hop. And we present the recipe for a wonderful year and it was one! Jimmies jor three St rumen, McFarlan, Mitchell, Will turns, Jordan, Hewett fresi dent. Class of I 9 6 Tee-bee Dome's Dancing Dandelion Thirty-four As wc reminisce about the fall term of our junior year, it is hard to decide which kept us the busiest and gave us the most fun . . . being ’Big Sisters” to the class of ’58 or the production of our own Junior Show. Wc were happily absorbed during those first weeks with welcoming our Sister Class and making the halls resound with ‘ Ach Lieber.” Then, on the night of October thirtieth, there was a turnabout when we found the Class of '58 singing to us as the curtain went down on the pride of the Junior Class, Once Upon A Wizard. i ■'There's no Wizard . . .” The winter months found us studying hard in our new “field of concentration, and filling P.O. corridor with the familiar cry, “Buy Junior Lunch!” But, The mountain s view there was time for Junior Coffee in November, the all college weekends, and of course, our “individual pursuits.” Meanwhile, back at the jarm We welcomed the spring season with Junior Prom, a weekend of class activities and fun. Then, suddenly, we were electing the class officers for our Senior year, and time seemed to have passed all too quickly. Leapfrog anyone? Cruising down the river Thirty-five Contuet te ut Yankees . . . and then we were seniors. Nobody knows exactly how it all happened, but when we returned in the fall and put on caps and gowns, everyone else seemed perfectly reconciled to the idea, so before long we, too, became used to our new roles. Looking back, it was hard to believe that so much had been crammed into those four years. As freshmen we were an eager group of “Little Sisters,” anxious to show the rest of the campus that we really belonged. We displayed our talents in the freshman one-acts and ring presentation; we joined all sorts of extra-curricular activities, tussled with “baby” courses, and survived the ordeals of Hazing day and blind dates. Picnic for '55 A sight for sore eyes Hi-Ho, hrisco!” Sophomore year we finished up the baby” courses, learned to knit, improved our bridge games, presented Soph Skit, and began to channel our interests. By junior year we were competent Big Sisters,” had chosen a major, produced the fabulous (at least we thought so) Hiy Ho Frisco, sold Junior Lunch, taken our first two o’clock permission for Junior Prom, and assumed many responsible club positions and offices. . . . and then we were seniors. We knew more of the faculty than anyone else, could take more 300 courses and arrange better schedules; we could be fierce on Hazing Day (though we were more scared than The Five Year Plan Thirty-seven Poor Lorry's (hid more 1955 Swamp gals The Burin Hop Thirty-ei bt Triple tftreat rhc freshmen) and casual on Mountain Day; we could blow whistles to keep trespassers off the lawn before Parents Weekend and have (or befriend those who had) cars after spring vacation; we could have job interview’s and plan weddings; we could talk smugly about taking no more finals and attending no more chapels; we could stop classes ten days early to study for majors; and, finally, we could graduate. All those things we could and did do because we were seniors. We were quite ready to relinquish the college life to be on our own, but there will be times when we can’t wear Bermuda shorts and sneakers, cut a class to take a break, or just sit down with a bunch of girls and talk . . . and those are the times when we’ll realize how' much college has meant to us. No matter how glad wc wrerc to get out, there may even be times when we’ll wish we had just Make mine Southern style Loyal begun . . . 11II ■W. Campus Life Forty-one Donkey serenade You can cut classes, skimp on sleep, go without food, but you can’t avoid dorm life. As soon as you enter the door (and you must by certain hours), you become a part of its fun, fellowship, and work chart. You arc a member of the mob that swarms around the mailboxes when the guy with the canvas sack appears, Forty-two Easter preview crowds the napkin boxes between the two sets of dinner bells, kibitzes in the living room, bums in the smoker, and, with a towel draped over one drooping shoulder, responds sleepily to the inevitable fire drills. There arc surprise birthday parties to plan, long distance phone calls to answer (always for somebody else), gay dorm parries to join, and multi dinner dishes to dry because you must pay back the girl who sat bells for your roommate who had scraped dishes for the girl who did your evening bells the night you were out having such a good time that you were late and subsequently suffered a loss of two weeks' registration. . . . but that’s dorm life, and who'd be willing to change it? Just between you ami me . . . Floor party Service with a smile :orty-three Keyes' Kingdom About Town Now as I see it . . . Wc can keep up with the fashions by stopping at Filene’s, Todd's or the beauty shop; for repairs there are the gas station, Pick’s and Dr. Abbey; for calorics we can choose among the C.I., Glessie's, the A P (take home food), and the Campus Grill (fondly called the Greasy Spoon); for those with domestic leanings there are the Yarn Shop and the Laundromat; and for those who send their laundry home wc have a conveniently located post office. Even hotel service is supplied through the generosity of the town's people who willingly rent out rooms for our families and dates. It’s true that wc have no movie theater, jewelers, or pizza place, but then everyone needs an excuse once in a while for leaving town. Our necessities of fife A big wheel an campus Playing post office? A stitch in time . . . PARCEL POST STAMPS Weekend permission? Practice makes perfect Academic Life No matter what our parents think, we really do spend a certain amount of rime academically engaged. It’s true that we can knit during class and may discover that we’re only taking study breaks between our cups of coffee and cigarettes; but when the pressure’s on, there’s a change in atmosphere. People stick it out till the flickering lights in the library become threatening, lights burn far into the night, and a sheaf of paper At home with the I lolrnes Forty-six P.V. containing unintelligible names and dates may accompany anyone to the john, phone, or dining room as time gets short. There are the inevitable paper deadlines, preceded by the agonizing state when you realize you have entirely too much or not nearly enough material. Somehow, everything gets done, and it all adds up to a fine education which is, after all, a primary reason for being here. . . . and let no one underestimate the importance of the faculty, those guardian angels who arc always so willing to help and befriend us. To them we will be eternally grateful. Channel 2 coming through In the last analysis . . . There was no denying chat old Shattuck was out-dated and inadequate, but little did we realize when they broke ground for the new chcm building last spring what an ultra-modern, super-equipped structure we would soon have on campus. Open for classes and labs this fall, we now have a brand new building which we can proudly show to all visiting dignitaries. Chem Building Growing . . . Grown! Do you bait blanket permission? This is a must Step right up! First Nobody could have known vvhar was in store for her upon arrival at college. First, there were the helpful girls in white to direct her to the administration to register and to point out her dorm. Then followed a hectic week of tests and exams when they checked on her posture, detected flaws in her speech, and threw vocabulary words (unheard of and each a mile long) at her for definition. On top of this, there Fifty The first of the 15 pounds Mr. J of iff, meet the muster Week was a new roommate to get to know, curtains and bed- spreads to be purchased, and thousands of initials to straighten out (P.O., C.I., S.G.A., A.A., J.B., ad infinitum). However, she managed to survive the first week, and by the time the upper classmen were settled, nobody could distinguish between the new-comer and the old-hands. Be prepared' Fifty-one They're off! Mountain Day Theoretically, that fine clay in October, when the chapel bell begins to ring uncontrollably at 8:00 A.M., comes as a great surprise; but actually, much speculation and pretty good detection work usually unearth the secret ahead of time. It is not until the chapel bell confirms the sleuthing, however, that everyone can dash to the kitchen and whip up a few sandwiches, hop on a bicycle, bus, or horse, and join the mass exodus for a refreshing day in the great out of doors. Share the wealth Fifty-two Nature gals Over the notch Tradition has it that the energetic freshmen climb mountains, social sophomores picnic by the Connecticut, jocund juniors leisurely loaf in the orchard, and the serious seniors sit home and study. But 9 4 no matter what anybody really does, it’s always a gratifying day spent away from academic appointments. There’s something about the color of fall foliage and the clear blue sky of a crisp autumn day that makes Mountain Day such a memorable occasion. To the river road The ends of a perfect day Fifty-three Llamie After weeks of frantic letter writing, dieting to be able to fit into the new dress, and anxious anticipation, Holyokitcs were ready to welcome their dates for the gala Llamie weekend. Friday night’s entertainment included the hilarious movie Genevieve; Saturday, the weather man played favorites and sent us a perfect fall day, so all sorts of outdoor activities including picnics, hikes and sight seeing were the result. Saturday nighr, after the metamorphosis from casual jeans and Bermuda shorts to glamorous formats, the crowd gathered in Chapin for the dance. Sunday, a real hoc jam session in the C.I. provided the finishing touch to a successful weekend. . . . and a good time w as had by all. Fifty-four Dance After the ball is over Small talk Our quests The pause that refreshes Fifty-five Traditions Traditions arc the little ingrown habits of a place which make it something special and give it personality. They arc the mark of individuality, yet the tie with those who have previously been a part of the community. Traditions may take the form of a special day such as our Mountain Day, Founder's Day, or Hazing Day. They have crept into the kitchen under the guise of a special dessert, Deacon Porter's Hat, which we have on Mary Lyon’s birthday. “Gracious Living with its unique Wednesday night manifestation . . . dressy attire, dinner by candle light, and coffee in demi-tasse cups . . . and Friday afternoon tea during the winter season are all a part of our college. Convocation Keyes lit the keys Gracious living Even clothes share in tradition: juniors, in rheir new role of ‘Big Sisters,” burst out in the early fall with their white blazers, and seniors, proud but self- conscious, parade to the first chapel of the year in cap and gown. How many other schools have a ‘ 1 ibe, “baby” courses, and blue books?” These arc a part of our private vernacular and therefore a part of our tradition. We mustn’t, of course, forget the significance of the sun dial or the tradition connected with upper lake. Living in a spot so brimming with traditions, it's no wonder that some of the spirit rubs off on each of us while we, in turn, have done our bit to keep it alive. A penny for luck Wanna munch Junior Lunch? l: jfry-seven Holly Hop Christmas Bcll s Despite the lack of snow, holiday spirits were much in evidence as the huge mobs of people filled Chapin to overflowing for Holly Hop. The giant tree laden with silver tinsel lent just the perfect atmosphere to the dance floor, and no one seeing the general gaiety of yuletide spirits would ever have known that Christmas was still two weeks away. Who ilotsri t believe in Santa? Christmas Dilemma When gaily decorated trees sprout in every dorm living room, and the enormous twin evergreen glitters with its festive lights; when dorm parties are bursting with good humour, over-stuffed Santa Clauses, and the exchange of hilarious presents; when Sophomores serenade the dorms and seniors sing carols to their honorarics; when excitement and enthusiasm run high . . . then, Christmas has come to the campus. It may be premature, but it's genuine. Senior secret and a Ho, Ho, Ho fifty-nine Better late than never! Sixty We never mention Aunt Clara . . Snow Although there were still lingering traces of snow outside, it was not until the dance floor was reached that everyone could he sure of the season. There, midst icicles and huge glistening snow flakes, was definitely “Mid-Winter Magic.” With the dance as the center attraction, the weekend sandwich was successfully surrounded by the Dance Club performance on Friday and jazz and Glee Club concerts on Sunday. One way ticket. t e yOinten Scene Sixty-one Nobody can study all the time, and to make sure that we take breaks, there arc spots for this particular purpose. We can dawdle over a mug of coffee and a magazine at Glessie’s or join the noisier clan at the C.I. and perhaps be treated to some keyboard harmony by the boss. When the weather’s warm, we can loll in the sun on Button Field or play a few rousing Gin to kibitz.? Sixty-two sets of tennis; when the weather’s cold, we can skate or ski; and when it rains, we can play bridge, knit, write letters, or just exercise our vocal chords. In fact, there’s no season when we can’t find an excuse for loafing. Fun, . . . isn’t it? Parting is such sweet sorrow Epicureans Sixty-three Janer Tangtrman, Joan Wharton, Jan tee Krusen, Judy Cooper, Jane Fauvtr, Cora-Alice St. John, Joan Williams. Sixty-four It is early May; spring is in the air; the grass (which we have been carefully not stepping on) has just been cut, and the campus looks its best. Add to this the presentation of a lovely May queen and her court, exciting canoe races on upper lake, tea in the dorms, a dra- matic club production, a generous portion of parents, and you have the ingredients for one of the nicest weekends of the year. Parents’ Weekend Sixty-jive Commencement Suddenly, Commencement was upon us and we were swept into the traditional rites of the laurel chain, step singing, presidential tea, and serenade on the lake. This was a big moment in our college careers, a time we wanted to share with parents and friends. For many, it was the end of formal schooling, and for all it was the culmination of four very full years. Commencement may seem like the end of many things, but when we have earned the privilege of flipping our rasslcs from right to left, it really means just a change of status . . . from under grads to alumnae.
