As you begin, we began, with a theme for our Llatnarada. A theme for you to read, and for us to write, a theme that you would understand, and that we would be able to follow. We have chosen the Tartan ... the Scotch Plaid . . . Scotland ... the Heather and the Hill . . . Aggie. Our tartan is made of colors, colors blended together to make the whole. No color is complete without the other, and the pattern is not complete without them all. We have woven a lot of different colors into our plaid. We have put a lot of different things into our book. We hope that the book we have created will not jar the poetic or aesthetic sense that anyone might possess. We hope that the colors we have chosen will not clash. Not being experts at either compiling a book or weaving a tartan, we cannot hope that we have achieved perfect re- sults. We do hope that you will like what we have done. Having mixed quite a bit together in both our ventures, perhaps it might be wise to explain some of it. Because the tartan is gay, with bright colors and vivid tones, we have tried to put a litlle of that into our Llamarada, and be- cause it is deeply traditional and filled with meaning, we have tried to keep traditions in our book, and of course, we have tried not to make it mean- ingless. And so, we give you the 1953 IJamarada, all that it is, and all that it isn't. We apologize for its inadequacies, and we take pride in its merits. If our pic- tures are ever too candid, or our copy too casual, it is only because, in true Scotch spirit, we have attempted “to see oursels as ithers see us”, and if in doing so we have managed to put a little “glee in your eye”, well, we kinna say that we’re sorry for it.
